    I pointed out the main points (based on my own opinions regarding what's most important) of the differences between these two engines.
    Don't forget to let us know what YOU think and feel about this topic! Do you think Unreal Engine is better for Level Designing? Or do you think that Unity has the upper hand?
    I hope you guys enjoy!

      It is almost impossible to make a true comparison. You would need to compare *all* the engine systems side by side, taking in a count that needs of different projects are different as well.
      On top of that you would need to have a fair rating system for different engine features and systems.
      The video claims to cover only Design, Graphics and Performance (what is not only very loose, but also far from including an excessive list of systems). But it doesn't do even that - the whole thing is just an opinion based on personal experience.
      There's no graphs, tables, statistics, tests. So it isn't even trying to be a true comparison anyway.

    I don't know if Unity does this but in Unreal, there's this thing called "Instanced Static Meshes" where it draws foliage using all the same data instead of having to reload the data for every single object. Also Unreal's dynamic lighting is much better than Unity's.

    So, how about performance? Tools for level optimisation? dynamic LOD, and culling to decrease polygons. I was just wondering about how unity's billboard approach vs Unreal's meshes tax you on your polygon limits? Map baking for faking effects and so on... I find that these are the most important aspects of level design since your game actually has to run at some frame rate :P

    Youre making good points and all in what youre saying. BUT please dont reuse the same footage for the Xth time and instead make something that fits what youre actually saying (e.g the grass on meshes and that). That would improve the videos by a lot but is also more effort for you.

    Hey man, I'm in school right now. This year I have the decision to choose a game design program to create a game with. I already did a year of gamemaker because school wanted us to. But this time I can choose my own. I don't really know both. Later I might want to do some gamedesigning/programming. Which gamedesignprogram would you recommend?
    I would love to hear back from you asap since I'm going to have to choose soon.

    Finally a comparison video by someone that knows what they are talking about. You earned my subscribe.
    As a long time Unity user (2008) turned Unreal4 (2014) I agree with everything you mentioned, the good and bad on both.
    It's true that Unreal has a bit of a learning curve on some things (like landscape shaders, etc) but I've come to accept the forced workflow as the reason why it's such a render beast. It beats constantly having to optimize evvvvvrything in Unity to keep a decent FPS.

      Unity and Unreal are both great tools, but it really depends on what you're trying to make. You need to understand the limitations of both, but you can make fantastic games in Unity (City Skylines ex.) and you can make crappy games too. But it all comes down to personal scope and understanding what you want to accomplish and what tools you need.

    • @Honiahaka1
      @Honiahaka1 6 лет назад +1

      Sure comfort is a factor, but no matter how comfortable you are, some tools are better for certain jobs. It all boils down to what you want to accomplish.

  • @stunthumb
    @stunthumb 7 лет назад +1

    In UE, you can use a landscape layer as a mask - so if you had a grass texture in your landscape material and apply it as a layer, you can use that as a basis for filling the terrain with foliage. It's probably not as slick as with Unity, as if you change something, you'd really need to erase all the grass and re-apply it. Foliage can have LOD's, but I've yet to try it - I am using tessellation on foliage meshes which does seem to be giving nice results... its most noticeable on my seaweed foliage, as that reacts to waves and water depth quite noticeably.

    Isn't the way you're building big rocks by making a pile of little rocks bad for the performance? Or does the engine somehow recognize that the faces inside aren't visible and ignores them?

    • @reststopkirkus
      @reststopkirkus 7 лет назад +1

      Most likely the Rock assets are instanced as well, so there are less draw calls. Essentially, there are 5 rock meshes that are repeated 20 times, it is only referencing 5 meshes, not 100 meshes. Make sense?

    • @marc2ster878
      @marc2ster878 7 лет назад +3

      reststopkirkus Of course, maybe I care too much about faces but I come from the Blender Game Engine and believe me there you think twice about every face you're using in a scene ^^

    • @Nival39
      @Nival39 7 лет назад +7

      "Make sense?"
      Mmmmh ... Rather non-sense.
      Ok, instancing is good for memory, but here there is A LOT of useless faces that the engine has to consider, it's very far to be optimized, an amateur and messy way in fact. Just ok for quick sketching, but a joke for talking performance.

    • @starduck2
      @starduck2 7 лет назад +1

      Hey dude, Blender GE mate! It's really true, on the blender game engine you think very well before even applying a proper multitexture material and triangles to the game ^^.

    • @KlimovArtem1
      @KlimovArtem1 7 лет назад +7

      "does the engine somehow recognize that the faces inside aren't visible and ignores them?" - of course it does. Rendering pipeline is very complex in modern game engines and there are a lot of optimizations applied during each step. Hidden faces don't get rasterized, unless they are behind transparent objects.

    I would like to start making games but I have literally 0 experience in any of this. I don't know how to code neither how to apply that code to a game and I don't know anything about game engines and level desing, how did you get started on this? Where can I learn? Is it hard? Is it going to take years? pls answer

    • @ryanm.3631
      @ryanm.3631 7 лет назад +1

      The answer is yes and no. If you're interested, you really couldn't be alive at a better time to start learning. You have all of the tools that you need at your fingertips for very low investment and next to no price. Whether or not it will take years is the wrong question. If you're truely interested and enjoy it, how much time it takes won't matter.
      Lynda.com has some really good beginner tutorials. I recommend starting here:
      www.lynda.com/Unity-training-tutorials/1242-0.html?category=beginner_337&author=jesse-freeman_2853349
      Depending where on the world you live, you might be surprised to find that your local library offers partnerships with Lynda to offer free access. I recommend that you do research and take advantage of it. Doing tutorials and learning about the game engine you're interested in is where you should start.

    • @novacti5254
      @novacti5254 7 лет назад +1

      yrtnE I have started learning Unity about 8 months ago and I'm already making a game whilst leading a team of 16 hobbyists. Its really not that hard.
      Just to give you my reasoning behind using Unity over UE4 is its workflow and the fact you can write code pretty fast and intuitively. Im the type of person who enjoys actually writing code and not connecting nodes. Whilst you can do that in UE, C# is much simpler than C++.
      I recommend getting used to the basic controls of the engine first (how to move around the viewport, whats an inspector, whats a hierarchy, how to make objects, ...) and then moving to programming.
      Programming is basically speaking to a computer. Its based on logic. Lets say you need to build a fire in real life. What will you need? A few sticks, matches, some tinder. If you spark a match, then you put it to set the tinder ablaze and put the tinder to the fire, youve got a fire. Programming works on the same principles. Since most of the programming in engines is done in object oriented programming, this means youre working with seperate objects. This means that you reference other objects and put scripts onto objects.
      I personally recommend Sebastian Lague's Intro to Gamedev series where he teaches basics of C# programming in Unity and Brackeys for more specific stuff (like an audio manager and such).
      I must warn you though, start out simple. The worst thing you can do is starting to work on an idea that you realize you cant make. Absolutely wrecks your morale and makes you feel shit. Start out simple (my first game made entirely by myself was just a cube jumping over other cubes) Also dont be afraid to ask and look around the internet. Everyone had to ask or look something up, so do the same. Youll learn more from simply looking up stuff you dont know than trying to figure it out on your own.
      If youll want, I can possibly help you out with some stuff.

    • @lofg6926
      @lofg6926 7 лет назад

      Thanks to both of you, I'll try those tutorials you recommended and if I have any question I'll tell you. Thanks

    • @Mrui
      @Mrui 6 лет назад

      If you want to just check out how to create simple stuff I can recommend Unity's official tutorials found at their site. There's a ton of stuff there and after you've finished those you can find endless amounts of teaching videos on RUclips. After learning the basics of Unity (or UE4 if you chose that as your first) it is easier to try the other one around and make your decision which one you suits you more. Remember that this is in no way a one day project but learning the first one well enough will take months.

      i tried unreal on my crap pc and it barely loaded, i got a much better one and its still pretty laggy once i did some stuff unreal is a platform for AAA devs, and not indies or even small teams (3 - 4), in unity you can make a game in minutes while in unreal you can make a super simple 3d platformer in about 1 hr 30mins, unity is super versatile, meaning you can make games in 2d and 3d with both having many awesome tools, unreals 2d is a joke, so its only for 3d, and with bolt now being free its even easier to make games in unity so i highly reccomend unity

    About grass , i think you problem with performance is due to render path used
    Have you tried set render parth to defered in unity ?
    UE use Defered render path by default , while unity use forward pass
    Defered have the advantage of being lighter for gpu and cpu , especialy when having LOTS of object since it's make shader calculation all at once while forward make shader calculation object by object
    Also from the knowledge i have of unity and unreal engine
    the only real limitation i've encountered in unity are shadows :
    they are limited to Hard Shadows with no translucence , soft shadows is just a small blur on edge
    So you can't color shadows with the mat, that the only graphics limitation i've experienced
    Post process and Screen Space reflection can be obtained with unity default post process assets on store and do pretty much the same as unreal post process volume
    It's sure also that build in tool for terain are better than unity one, but they are relatively easy to overpass with custom tool and don't ask as much work than rewriting shadows system
    On the Unreal limitation , I think that Shader Node system is also a good and a bad thing , as someone who went into shader programming it's far unferior to unity's, even if artist friendly :
    Unreal seam to be limited to defered (except for transparency object because defered can't support transparency) , and you can't write custom lighting system (fragment shader) without having to go directly in Source code and have to put your hand is a huge mess

    I've never used unity so I can't make a comparison myself but I see a lot of comments saying you can buy or write additional shaders etc to bring unity up to par with UE4 graphically, what I want to know is this... Why is having to buy add ons or spend extra time writing graphics routines to compete graphically with what can be found on UE4 from the start any kind of argument at all?
    I would understand if Unity equally excelled in some area that meant the extra time spent tweaking graphics was saved elsewhere maybe that is the case but _that_ argument is never pushed.
    There were a few reasons I originally chose UE4 over Unity but a big one was because I want to focus more on the game play and spend time designing game mechanics, not writing shaders and spending more effort (or cash) than needs be. I'm interested to here from anyone that uses Unity as to why this is a common argument, or if there's more to it.

    • @jwchunn
      @jwchunn 6 лет назад +2

      I think the main argument for Unity is that it is much easier to learn for non-pros (according to the masses), it deploys on more platforms, it produces very good results right out of the box, and with a little "extra" effort it is capable of producing results that can compete head to head with Unreal. I'm not interested in a holy war... Just responding to your question.

    • @barryroberts9086
      @barryroberts9086 5 лет назад +1

      This doesn't respond to my question at all. There are many arguments that could be made in favor of either engine, my question was specific to a particular argument from the unity community but thanks anyway.

    As a world-builder AND modeler AND animator, I'd have to say that while I think UDK has a pretty significant advantage in visual quality - especially in regards to shadows (a huge weakness in Unity), tessellated shaders, and foliage/plants - Unity is far easier to work in if you are jumping back and forth between Unity and your other DCC packages. If you are *just* a world-builder and mostly dealing with finished assets that someone handed you, then yes, UDK would seem to be a better environment .... but Unreal's clunky import system is a PITA once you're used to being able to drag something out of the Explorer window right into Unity or work on/save over assets in the Assets folder and have them update automatically. I'm far from proficient in UDK, so my opinion IS biased, but I've heard the same complaint from people familiar with both. If Unity would bring up their shadows, foliage control, and tessellated shader quality/performance, Unreal would lose most of it's edge.

    If not for C#, I would totally pick UE4 or CryEngine - I can totally understand why a designer would pick one of those, but... I'm a programmer - so Unity wins my heart simply by offering C#. The language options offered by UE4 and CryEngine are terrible. With Roslyn being open source, it's hard to understand why these engines don't offer C#. Or another statically-typed mainstream language. It's a shame we still have to pick between designer joy and developer joy 🙄

    • @rRT_1

      ShinyDark he meant c#

    • @RasmusSchultz
      @RasmusSchultz 6 лет назад +6

      ShinyDark you want C++ for custom physics or AI, or anything performance critical, sure - but for game and scene logic, the high level stuff, C++ is a horrible choice. You'll want a safer language like C# where you can work fast without worrying about memory leaks, null pointer exceptions, and so on. There is "performance critical" code, and then there is "scripting" code - the latter benefits far more from a safe, readable language that from marginal overall performance gains from C++. Virtually every game engine offers at least Lua for the scripting stuff. I prefer C# because of static typing. I didn't realize CryEngine offered C#, so I will definitely check that out :-)
