You make this stuff look so easy, then I go spend a few hours in KSP bumbling around making all sorts of mistakes. It's fun! But I'm slowly learning. That manoeuvre node planner just doesn't make much sense to me. Also, I feel your pain with the heat, I live in outback Australia with no air conditioning.
I enjoy these types of videos every now and then just to see some of the planning that goes into these more ambitious missions, and frankly I'm very glad it's not (yet another) Mun landing. What surprised me is how easy, or in some cases hard it was to get encounters for docking and landing. Personally I've had a massive amount of trouble wrapping my head around the concept, so it was cool to see a "seasoned veteran" like yourself really show how it's done in real-time. I know it would interfere with the vibe of your typical content, but I'd be totally down for more of these types of vids in the future, if infrequently. (Maybe Laythe next time?)
What a perfect timing. Not working on Duna, but I've been trying to add a return vehicle to my 16t Minmus rover. Mostly by building a trailer that carries a rocket.
The obvious answer to which mission you should do live next is: Eve. >:D It would actually be interesting to see you do a stressful mission live, as a change from your usual videos.
Something that might help with the heat Matt, is a dehumidifier, My office is also always 28-30 degrees and being England, is also wet, and it's been a lot more bearable since I bought a dehumidifier taking it from 80% down to 35%. (Also, the Logitech G512 is a beautiful keyboard, mine has been going strong for five and a half years now and it's as good as day one)
I absolutely love these live-commentary videos Matt and I would absolutely love more of them! Especially an Eeloo-mission because that’s one of those I’ve never felt like I’ve been able to do consistently!
Can't wait to watch this video, but I just wanted to say; I'd love to see you try to make a station and lander around a planet orbiting another star using mods!
I put in one of the systems(vulture) and had a ship with modded power generation that could maintain warp 1.6 forever. It was going to take 25 RL days to fly there at that speed. Would be really hard to make a video without cheating your way to the new system or just showing a few seconds of a long boring trip. Then it's just the same thing going around a planet with different graphics. I knew space was big but I never really understood how big until I did that.
your commentary is perfect, especially since i cant watch all the time, its like listening to Radio Space :D perfectly describing the mission and i can see it in my mind while you do the commentary! Great job
Hey Matt! I appreciate the respect you have for your audience. Not all streamers will turn away from the mic to cough, or will speak into their mic through yawns and shit, and it feels disrespectful. Thank you for being decent, and for the great videos :)
It's about gravity and pressure. Engines are optimized for sea level, vacuum or somewhere in between... unless it's an aerospike the pressure is definitely a thing. Scott Manley told me all about it.
In case no one else has recommended it yet, I think you'd get quite a lot out of TU Recolour Depot, and especially Lazy Painter. They allow for a lot of customisation of how stock parts look.
i like these videos :) you reinvigorated my love for ksp, so i spent the past few days troubleshooting to run it on linux, its all your fault, thank you
Out of curiosity: why don't you use the auto-timewarp feature? Green button to the left of the burn indicator, right of your nav-ball. It auto-warps you to 1 minute before the burn should start. You can also click your trajectory and click "Warp here" to do something similar.
Personally, I enjoy these live commentary videos. Its nice to know that even the professionals have the same slip ups as the rest of us, plus it gives a bit more idea of how long the missions actually take, so we can fully understand the work that goes into them. We don't always get that with a fully produced and edited video.
Dr. Lowne, I do believe you need to be cooling your studio closet. If you have a window, buy a window A/C unit. If not, assuming you’re renting, get a portable A/C unit and just rig something up to route the duct outside of the room!

Everyone can see you're using Restock, which is not the case for the patch I use. :) But I use the patch because it means faster loading and it's more accurate on some nose cones. I wanted to build my own keyboard as a project, but there's just no reason for me to do so. I get on all right with Logitech keyboards, believe it or not with how much I type, but I've got a Kinesis Freestyle 2 now and it's great! Given that I don't know what switches I'd like without trying them, I think I'll stick with these. (I wonder if someone will tell us Kinesis use something better than Cherry switches. XD I don't know, but I'm half-expecting it!) I don't see how a switch would feel better or worse just because it's optical. It might be easier to design as you don't have to think about how the contacts would affect the feel, but I'm sure it's not a problem for Cherry who have decades of experience with designing mechanical switches. I had to fix staging during launch once or twice. I found it a little too exciting! XD If the command module spins around and whacks into the lander, would that make it slapstick comedy IN SPACE? :) But that might be my sleep deprivation talking. Matt: "We got loads of time to apoapsis, so there was no stress in that whatsoever." Me: _Worrying whether the lander's engine will fire by accident._ :) But I should have had faith in Matt -- he checked his staging, even if he did do it on the fly. There's a fix for the engine sound bug in KSPCF, but it often makes all the sound come out of one speaker when you're in map view -- annoying with headphones. The actual bug is the sound is given a position very far away from where it should be, so I guess KSPCF just limits the position relative to the rocket instead of centering it in map view. Nice touchdown! The commentary is good. I'm even thinking this looks set to be one of my favourites. :) It's easier for me to listen to than normal, probably because I find it harder to listen to punchier commentary. That said, I might be getting better as I learned something about my health. I realised I've got ADHD, and I'm learning how stimulants help. One person even said something like, "A person with ADHD needs stimulants like a short-sighted person needs glasses." I know all about living with glasses! :) But whether or not my body can tolerate caffeine every day is another question. Oh the encounter excitement! :) Oh not targeted? That was weird. I'm sure if I tried to comment while playing, there would be... comedy. Let's just call it comedy. :) We're keeping the lander attached! Hey Matt. youre videos are actually pretty good. so dont underestimate yourself bro. you achieved already big Thinks, you will achieve more. im stupid at this game somehow, but still love it.
I can't even imagine building anything in this game in ten minutes. If I spent ten times that long I'd have an overthought, over-engineered vehicle that, turns out, was missing at least one part critical to its mission.
Just watched the video. Great stuff. Have a few questions, followed by an answer to the question you asked in the video. 1. What is the actual purpose of the LES? I've got more than 1000 hours into KSP, and I've never used it. Nor have I ever seen anyone explain what it's used for, or how to use it effectively. I know this wasn't a tutorial video, but it's a question I have, so there you are. 2. Why did you not use the rest of the fuel - or at least some of it - from the ascent stage for the LKO circularization? I know you said you over-engineered the craft (which I also have a tendency to do), but why not use it if you brought it with you? That would have saved on fuel for the trip there and back, right? 3. Why did you go EVA in LKO to get crew into the lander? Couldn't you have just used the Transfer function considering you had the lander connected via a docking port (albeit to the engine)? 4. Due to Duna's rotation, didn't you come in on the "hot" side? That is, you came in following the same rotation as Duna, which, if I'm correct, cost you additional dV for the capture burn. Shouldn't you have come in right-to-left instead of the left-to-right rotation you used? 5. When attempting rendezvous burns, such as when you launched from Duna's surface to get back to the mothership, why aren't you adjusting the engine thrust of the craft? I always do that so that the burn times get longer and more controllable. I mean, you do you, but I'm curious as to why you don't do that? And now for the comment! You asked if we liked this video, and if we did, what other missions could you fly using this style. Well, I loved the video. I like raw, unfiltered commentary and in-game hijinks that you aren't correcting; it makes me realize that I'm not the only one that forgets stuff or does things that I have to correct in-flight. But as for more like this? Well, I'd like to see a Jool-5. Everyone does videos of Eve, or Duna, or even Moho. But I've yet to see a live commentary, in the style of the video you just did, for a Jool-5. That, at least to me, would be interesting. Oh, and one more question for you please. What visual mods are you using? I like the style of the interface, and I know it's not the stock one. What visual mod is doing this? Anyhow, great stuff. Keep it coming!
your not alone in preferance of mechanical over the other veriant. hell i love mechanical because its a good reminder IT EXISTS ill take a noisy keyboard that maybe gets picked in audio on the odd over a silent but rather short living board. also long lived keyboard.
Welcome to the game! :) You might be best off looking in Matt's older videos. He's done a bunch of tutorials in the past, including much of the first 2 Lowne Aerospace series, and he's explained a lot in most of his non-tutorial videos too. After all that, he's got tired of explaining. :) If Matt's tutorials don't work out for you, nor the ones he references such as Scott Manley's, try Mike Aben. There used to always be a few people saying "I've played for years but I can't land on the Mun" until Mike Aben made his tutorials.
I recently started playing (PS4 no mods) and love science, so far I've landed kerbals on, Eve, Duna, Mun, and Laythe.......I don't know by comparison if these are "achievements" but as a new player I'm having fun 😁
The greatest achievement you can accomplish is landing on Eve,and then making it back in orbit from the surface of Eve. Very easy to land there, but so so hard to get back off of it. Good luck.

Gee, now I actually do wanna see a live commentary low tech Duna mission.
your not alone in preferance of mechanical over the other veriant. hell i love mechanical because its a good reminder IT EXISTS ill take a noisy keyboard that maybe gets picked in audio on the odd over a silent but rather short living board. also long lived keyboard.
We need more fold out space stations and bases
Outdoors 33C(94F) is the classic hot summer day for us Americans but indoors that is insanity. If it to 80F(27C) inside I would be dying.
Finally a new video i am always waiting for one!
MOAR of these videos please!
This is the only time ive been interested in a youtube video sponsor lol
Hooray, live commentary matt!
hey Matt, good video. towards the end you felt really annoyed tho. have a nice day!
Loved the live version
Youve got free iva! You should transfer your kerbals between vessels with it! And avoid that clunky ui, plus its just more fun!
Live commentary to the rumored planet in the asteroids. Something like Dre’s? I don’t think it exists though.
If you do more modded-focused missions in the future, I'd personally love to see some stuff with the Kcalbeloh system
its quite funny watching this video while I go to a black-hole star system to scan for asteroids.
A nice a smooooth mission. lol 😅
Just so you know, I’m new to ksp so don’t hide how you do stuff please. Especially how to work out the perfect hands-off gravity assist launch
Ah yes, the ole "main character" has dropped in
Welcome to the game! :) You might be best off looking in Matt's older videos. He's done a bunch of tutorials in the past, including much of the first 2 Lowne Aerospace series, and he's explained a lot in most of his non-tutorial videos too. After all that, he's got tired of explaining. :)
If Matt's tutorials don't work out for you, nor the ones he references such as Scott Manley's, try Mike Aben. There used to always be a few people saying "I've played for years but I can't land on the Mun" until Mike Aben made his tutorials.
Matt you sneaky devil you. You cut around quick saves?!? Lol jp
Good luck.
