As a biologist and scuba diver, I am very grateful that @TheDodo put that disclaimer on this video. It's critical to remember that, while they look and sound entertaining and cute, they are predators and wild animals. All the provided information was correct. Nonetheless, yet another heart-warming video! 😊
Yep, they are extremely powerful animals, and they can be aggressive for no reason apparent to us. Also, there is a reason they are called sea 'lions' ... just look at the teeth they have on them. (That's probably not what gave them their name, of course, but there is no way I'd get close to that mouth.)

Well, mostly it is because if you feed them or become too close to them they can become dependent on the person. They have been known to becme more fat and lazy when in contact with humans which is very bad for their health.

When I was a little kid at Ocean Shores (Washington), a mother seal was crying for her baby. Some monsters had run her baby over, and she didn’t want to go back. She just kept crying. People were keeping her wet, and getting her food, but she wouldn’t eat. I sat with her, and in my little kid way, said “I’m sorry they killed your baby. They are bad people, but your baby would want you to go back and be happy, not sad. That’s what I would want for my Mom.” I just sat and talked to her about it, as silly as it seems. There was distance between us (wildlife is wildlife), but she looked at me, and looked over at my Mom and sister, and started heading back to the water. As silly as it sounds, I hope my child self comforted her a bit, because I do think her baby would want her to go on.
The couple who had spent the last 3 days trying to keep her alive asked what I did, and I just said “I would want my Mommy to be happy, and that’s what I think her baby wants too. That bad people can’t take that away.” The lady who had been helping her was very sweet and hugged me. They kept that seal going like rockstars.
I guess what I’m trying to say is, there is a universal language of compassion we can all share, and it costs nothing, but is the greatest gift we can give to others. Stay safe, take care of yourselves, and each other 🩷🩵

You unleashed onion ninjas on me with that bittersweet story aaaa- goddammit you're such a sweet person and animals can be intelligent creatures even if it doesn't seem that way or don't give them enough credit, so I'm sure that sea lion completely understand you and you probably had her realized that, hopefully she's with her baby by now or had more babies where they lived their full lives and maybe with that oldest (still baby) sibling as well, and screw those that killed the baby like wtaf *firing me up as I love seals/sea lions and probably consider them as my spirit animal as I love water and a fat, lazy blob that'll get grumpy if my beauty sleep is disturbed lol*

They spoke each other's language. Their own "love language". So, the sea lion passed near your home.. so no wondering? They shared an appreciation for each other, despite their extreme differences. They saw past those. Amazing story. Sad sea lion had to leave after only a couple years. Their thrill at seeing each other, and playing together, was amazing to witness

They didn't really have a relationship. It was just one animal barking and another animal coming up on land to rest.
Leave it to a dog to show humans that sometimes your best friends can be completely different from you in every way, that different doesn’t mean enemy/adversary. ❤ We are so lucky to have dogs ❤
...And the fact that we have formed such a bond with dogs, who are the descendants of wolves who used to sometimes eat humans, shows that an animal being completely different from you doesn't have to make them an adversary. :)

What a beautiful story! What a special friend Slim had. I give more credit to animals than I do my fellow humans. Slim actually got the lesson we all need to learn. It doesn’t matter what you look like as long as you’re accepting of others. Thank you for the share!

Yup, I cried at the end of this. I know she knows her dog best, but I couldn’t help cringing with him going so deep without a vest on because of how strong the waves are. Most dogs won’t go out that far. It’s beautiful that he knew where he fit in best.

That's so precious to see the relationship two living beings had for such a special time in thier lives. And I had to rewind the part toward the end where Slim jumped over the wave as it began to crest - you know that's an ocean dog when he's jumping waves like a human would! Thankfully the sea lion made friends with a dog and his mom who knew better than to rush up to it and pretend like it was time to pose for IG pictures. People do that with wildlife constantly and I want to slap them cross-eyed for being stupid. If you bumrush a bear and her cubs for "cute" pics, you deserve everything you get. If you run towards an antelope for pics&think you can outrun it, you DESERVE to be trampled under its hooves. It's not the animals' fault you're a dumba$$.

I must confess I wasn't expecting the end. It saddened me immensely. Yes, I am very happy and touched that they shared a very unique and inexplicable friendship for two lovely years. But, learning that the sea lion passed away practically brought me to my knees. It hurts not to know what the dog might be thinking about his friend's absence. Is he still waiting for him? Is he still hoping they'll meet again someday? I just wish we'd never lose the ones we love. Anyway, thank you SO VERY MUCH for sharing this story. It's made me appreciate my loved ones ever so much more.🥲❤️
