What a terrific piece! Certainly a fine successor to Jeux. It is very French; full of wonderful colors, moods, and ideas.

Who: Henri Dutilleux, age 49. Notorious perfectionist who wrote primarily for orchestra. At this time the Head of Music Production for Radio France, and a professor of composition at École Normale de Musique de Paris.
What: Métaboles, a 5 movement concerto for orchestra structured around the idea of melodic, harmonic, and rhythmic metamorphosis. An 18’ showpiece in the vein of Ravel’s Rhapsodie Espagnol or Debussy’s Images pour orchestre.
Where: Dutilleux lived in Paris, Métaboles premiered in Cleveland.
    When: Written 1963-4, premiered 14 January 1965.
Why: On commission by George Szell for the Cleveland Orchestra’s 40th anniversary.
Métaboles resides on some remote island, bathed in mist and unseasonably cool. Here lies are a relic of Debussy, isolated from the rest of the world and moving to the beat of its own drum. And it's not that this finely preserved specimen hasn’t done well for itself, but there is an unspoken sadness beneath its carefully refined sensibility. It may carry out its rituals with conviction, but there is no leaving the island.

metaboles means in short deep varitions. The National orchestra of France rebdders exceelntly the French mastrwork of Dutilleux. All is crystal clear in these metaboles.

Many years ago (1970's?) I noticed an LP with this work on one side and the Honegger 4th Symphony on the flip side. Not knowing anything about Dutilleux but wanting to know about his work, I went for this LP. And sure enough I listened to this work more than the Honegger!! I will admit the combination of this and the pastoral nature of the Honegger was a very common practice by putting two very different works on LP's.

I realize this is a rhetorical question but it's not only the beauty and emotional depth but truth of the work. You could also cry for 99.999999% of composers who couldn't give the world in their whole output what Dutilleux provides in any minute of his.
