Her voice reminds me of the veiled, dark and mysterious sound of the viola, very expressive and inmensely moving. God brings up closer to him when he speaks to us through voices like this.

This is an artist whose vocal mastery is not only love-filled and flawless, but is projected with the artist's full awareness of the pain she endured as she suffered daily with the terminal illness that was to end her young life. Whoever has any of her Decca 78 RPMs possess gems as no other.

Ich geh', ich wand're in die Berge. Ich suche Ruhe, Ruhe für mein einsam Herz" just as the very first time... helpless.. I never can listen to her publicly
@@ThomasDawkins88 Agree; cancer had its painful affects for sure, but actually I find this cosmic sadness in her Kindertotenlied under Klemperer and Erbarme dich, mein Gott under Karajan too, both recorded before cancer came.

Apparently she was in excruciating pain from her cancer when she made the Mahler recordings. You'd never know it to listen to her.

...I think she had broken her leg automatically onstage from a metastasis on her last performance of Orfeo
