Kathleen Ferrier and my mother were schoolmates. Her incredible voice, almost too intense to bear, has been part of my life since childhood. Her collaborations with Mahler's disciple, Bruno Walter, illuminate these phenomenal works of art.
The very first time that I ever heard Kathleen Ferrier happened pretty much by accident. My high school choir + a couple of others in the city were chosen to perform with the local junior symphony orchestra. One of our assignments was the Bruckner TE DEUM & not being familiar with it I decided to purchase a recording. The one I obtained had on the reverse side of the LP Mahler‘s KINDERTOTENLIEDER which is the recording played here. Immediately I responded to this music & the wonderful & absolutely unique timbre of Ferrier‘s instrument. What an introduction. I was not, at that time, not familiar with classical type voices at all, however, everything about Ferrier‘s singing & interpretation affected me on an emotional level & this was perhaps the first time that I had ever reacted in such a way to any type of classical music whatsoever. I was not even drawn to opera at that time either. There are very few voices that after 3 or 4 notes I would recognize almost immediately. Ferrier‘s is one & Boris Christoff is another.

Sublimement merveilleux
The best version on YT.

What does that mean in English?
Saludos cordiales ❤❤❤
Too posh for me🙍
Le chagrin sublimé!❤❤❤
