  • 2016 Fender Magnificent 7 American PJ Bass review. This is a video review of all the sounds and features of this amazing new bass. Please disregard my rusty playing, and the poor audio as it was recorded with the mic on my camera. I'm playing through an Ampeg 2x10 combo w/ scrambler distortion. The camera's mic does not give you the best representation of the sound, but you will get an idea of how the different pickups sound. Please comment below if you have specific questions.
    As always, if you want me to make more videos, please like and subscribe.

    Great looking instrument and you play it well. I love the pj configuration with the pickups as well as the pj build configuration with the precision body and jazz neck. You got yourself a great bass!!

    Hey Erik, thanks for the informative video. As someone who has been debating between a Precision and Jazz for a non-active 4-string bass, this bass was right on target. One is on the way, and your video has helped confirm it is likely to fill the bill nicely. Again, thanks for taking the time to share your experience with this instrument.

      Arrived today, and I played on it for a bit. As versatile as you indicated, with the best of Jazz and P basses... and a sound with both pickups that (for me) sounds even better. Just a first playing, but impressed.

      Happy to hear that you like it. Yeah, I really dig playing with both pickups on. Sounds great, feels great, and I'm still surprised at how light it is. My Jazz weighs twice as much!

    Hi,
    Could you do a video comparing your new Precision with the Jazz Bass?
    Nice video!
    Thank you!

      @ErikStone1  7 лет назад +1

      OZ TORRES Yes, I do plan on making a video around my Jazz, and I'll make comparisons. One major difference is that this new PJ Bass is much lighter than my Jazz 🙀

    Great bass! A black one with maple fingerboard would be my dream bass. Sad they designed it with sunburst finish and rosewood neck. By the way, is it noisy when isolating the Jazz pickup?

    • @ErikStone1
      @ErikStone1  6 лет назад +1

      Sunburst and rosewood would not be my favorite pick either, but Fender ran the numbers and found that this combination is their most popular. So that's why it is what it is. The Jazz pickup is not that noisy. There will always be a little bit of noise with a single coil style of pickup, but these are Fender custom shop 60s reissues and made of high quality. I think they sound great.

    • @ioannist.5568

      Yes apparently. I'll definitely try to test and buy one. This bass has best of both worlds

    Great review Erik, thanks.
    I have ordered such a bass recently from ebay and looking forward to playing on. Could you please share your feeling now after using it on gigs, or in mix together with the rest band? Many thanks in advance, Dmitry

    • @ErikStone1
      @ErikStone1  7 лет назад +2

      Hi Dmitry, yes it sounds great live. Just play with the tone knobs to see what cuts through your mix. You will be working with different sound systems, and different musicians with different settings, so you will need to dial it in to what sounds best to you. Just straight through a DI box sounds good too. They are passive pickups, but they still sound great. More importantly is the feel of the instrument. You can use pedals and amps to change the sound of any instrument, but there's nothing you can do to change the feel of it (except maybe sand down the neck). This neck feels great, and the body is super light! I have a Jazz bass (MIJ) that is a lot heavier.

      Erik Stone, many thanks for your reply and advice. Looking forward to having it, it is still in a transit to me... I have a nice 2012 Am Std P bass, and I love it. The only what I miss in P is a clarity tone in slap and growl. I hope this bass will give me everything what I need.

    That bass sounds great!

    • @ErikStone1
      @ErikStone1  7 лет назад +2

      Yes, it really does. I wish everyone could hear it in person. The microphone on my camera really does not do it justice. I'm playing it through an Ampeg 2x10 combo, so that adds to the sound as well.

    Thank you Erik! I really enjoyed it. The bass is great. So what is your opinion comparing it to a standard precision or a jazz bass?

    • @ErikStone1
      @ErikStone1  7 лет назад +1

      +2OfSpades thanks for commenting. Just my opinion, but the American is only slightly better than the Standard. This one is much lighter than my Jazz bass. You can fix up a standard to feel and play like an American model. It all depends on how handy you are. I may make another video of me fixing up my Jazz Bass.

    • @2OfSpades
      @2OfSpades 7 лет назад +1

      Erik Stone when I said standard I meant the American series I didn't remember that now it means made in Mexico. Have you heard the Squier Affinity PJ bass?

    • @ErikStone1
      @ErikStone1  7 лет назад

      Ah, I know what you mean. This one is a lot like the regular American series, but not the American Elite. The American Elite does have PJ pickups, but they are active. Also the neck on the Elite feels radically different since it tapers down thinner towards the 12th fret. I've seen the Squire Affinity PJ online, but I've never played one. I have played the Squire modified Jazz, and I loved it! Great feeling neck.

    • @ErikStone1

      Just ordered a Squire VM Precision PJ bass in the sunburst (it looks identical to your bass). I didn't want to go for the most expensive VM Jazz bass because of the extra weight and slightly higher price, and I figured the PJ pickup configuration would give me a wide range of tonal possibilities (the classic P-bass sound that I love and the brighter J-Bass type sound). Not a legit US model like yours, but hopefully a good budget bass. Thanks.

    I have the squier vintage modified precision pj bass which looks like squiers version of the magnificent 7. Oddly my squier vintage modified precision pj sounds identical. Is that oddly normal?

    • @ErikStone1
      @ErikStone1  5 лет назад +1

      In my experience, you can get great tones out of a Squire. For me, the main difference between the two is how they feel in your hands. The neck is a little more comfortable on the American version. I did play a Squire vintage modified jazz bass that I fell in love with. I looked kinda like the Jaco Pastorius model. I may still get one someday.

  • @panych3198

    Finally I have received this bass, great instrument with both classic and modern sound. Neck is really comfy and thinner than standard Pbass neck.
    Erik, could you please advise whether the magnet poles of your bass's p-pup have bevel edges? My bass has so while another my 2012 AS Pbass with 60's CS pup has poles with sharp edges shapes.
    Is it normal that volume output of both pups is a bit lower than when using just one pup?

    • @ErikStone1
      @ErikStone1  7 лет назад +1

      I haven't noticed the pole's edges...I'll check mine when I get a chance either late tonight or tomorrow. I haven't noticed any volume output differences, but again I'll check it out to be sure.

    • @ErikStone1
      @ErikStone1  7 лет назад +1

      I just looked at mine, and the poles do look beveled around the edge.

    and a 2004 mexican jazz bass with slightly older strings will sound just the same :) or close enough. none better than the other.

    • @ErikStone1
      @ErikStone1  6 лет назад

      I won't argue with you about that because there are some amazing Mexican made Fenders out there. BUT...all I will say is play this particular one first, and then compare it. It has custom shop PJ pickups (very versatile) and quiet. The Mexican made from the factory are good, but not the best. I'm a fan of the cheaper instruments, so by all means, buy a Mexican made Fender and upgrade the pickups, tuner pegs, bridge, and have the frets rolled on the edges, and you'll have an amazing instrument for way less money than an American made.

      Currently it sounds like crap. I had taken out the passive MEC pickups, and dropped in some Bartolinis. I hate them, so I'll be looking for a replacement set of pickups soon. It plays nice though ;)
