The cute dwarf mongooses really delight visitors to the East Africa House at Zoo Vienna (@thezoovienna), which is also called Schoenbrunn Zoo sometimes. These are East African dwarf mongooses (Helogale parvula undulate) - a subspecies of the southern dwarf mongoose.
The bVon der Decken's hornbill (Tockus deckeni) not only lives with the dwarf mongooses in Schoenbrunn, but also in nature. The species is named after Baron Karl Klaus von der Decken (1833-1865). He collected the type specimen in East Africa, where he undertook several - and ultimately his last - expeditions.
The southern ground hornbill (Bucorvus leadbeateri) is a species with many names: red-cheeked ground hornbill, southern ground hornbill, red-faced ground hornbill, or Kaffir hornbill. Visitors not only encounter this species in the East Africa House but also in the giraffes' park and on the visitor paths. The species is threatened in nature, but in Zoo Vienna it enjoys freedom from these threats.
Modern zoological gardens, like Zoo Vienna, are not only the key to the survival of the ground hornbills but also to the survival of the entire ecosystem, to which the East Africa House at Zoo Vienna is dedicated. It also fits in very well with the reticulated giraffe neighborhood. This is also a species that Zoo Vienna is committed to protecting.

The East Africa House is something like a magnifying glass on an important ecosystem that conservation must preserve. A historic swamp birdhouse used to stand at this location. However, this was torn down and rebuilt in the same shape. The East Africa House was then opened together with the giraffe park at Zoo Vienna. This facility complex is an excellent example of how both work at the same time: monument preservation and modern zookeeping.
