Tufted deers and red pandas have been living together in an installation at Wuppertal Zoo for some time. This video takes a look at the new installation.

We started the video more than a year ago. The tufted deers had just arrived at the Wuppertal Zoo and had acclimatized there. Marcel Weinert, the deputy team leader in the department, reports on the day of arrival and settling in. It was actually special.
Tufted deers are related to muntjacs. They are classified as an NT species and are therefore close to being considered threatened. Zoological gardens want to try to prevent this and protect the species from extinction in the long term. This important work is only possible thanks to institutions like Wuppertal Zoo.
Wuppertal Zoo keeps the species Elaphodus cephalophus michianus (East Chinese crested deer) and has socialized it with Ailurus fulgens (Western lesser panda). Together with the crested deers, red pandas fit perfectly into the Himalayan theme world at the Wuppertal Green Zoo.

Red pandas, as the lesser pandas are also called, are excellent ambassadors for their threatened species and this equally threatened habitat. They also show the importance of modern zoological gardens. Thanks to institutions like Wuppertal Zoo, the species has a future in nature.

Das ist super 😊 Haltungsqualität misst sich zwar nicht in Quadratmetern, aber für die Besucher ist es natürlich eine super spannende Erfahrung zu schauen, wer gerade wo wie unterwegs ist. 😊
