    There is and has always been a lot of hype surrounding Christian Pulisic. Only 23 and already the most successful American football player by most of the usual metrics.
    But is he that good? And even further, given his age, nationality and potential, why is he in such a unique position?

    I love Pulisic neither as a player, nor a symbol for American football, but simply as a young talented individual with passion, determination, diligence, and humility. The media can be really harsh with on him sometimes, but I hope that people could see through all the hype and expectations, to appreciate the man for the incredible personal and professional qualities that he posesses.

I didn't get to experience much of a footballing culture throughout my childhood which is what almost made fall out of love with the sport. As an American I have to say that he's probably the most talented player in our pool but ironically he's not the most important. There are two or three players I would rank ahead of him at this point in terms of importance to the national team.

    • @FootballIconic
      @FootballIconic  2 года назад +6

      Who are those two, may I ask?

    • @bobfttw
      @bobfttw 2 года назад +31

      @@FootballIconic I mean this in terms of national team success as opposed to being a symbol but
      Weston McKennie, Tyler Adams and then for me the development Ricardo Pepi are the three players who for me will make or break the national team in the future.
      The states don't have a De Bruyne, Fernandes type creative player maker at an international level yet so McKennie and Adams act as dual 8s and are our two most versatile midfielders. If they don't play we have major issues.
      We also don't have a high level striker on our team. Zardes is a solid player who has grown a bit but in order for us to find success getting the ball in the back of the net we need a solid number 9. Pepi is our best bet (yes my fellow Americans I know Ferrera is good). When Pepi plays well the USA doesn't have to rely on Pulisic for those goals (he's our best scorer in terms of talent).

    • @danw4711
      @danw4711 2 года назад +12

      The narrative with Tyler Adams 🙄. You need a game changer on the biggest stage I’ll give you Weston but it’s Christian for sure. Gio Reyna has the potential but CP10 is the proven entity

    • @bobfttw
      @bobfttw 2 года назад +4

      @@danw4711 I'm sorry but when you take Adams out of that team that midfield is considerably less talented Musah isn't there yet especially when you watch his Valencia games. I've got Christian third at best. I trust the USA's forward depth (outside of a high quality 9) more than our midfield depth.

    • @danw4711

      @@bobfttw you say that but they beat Mexico (2 times -he made a late sub appearance in 1) and Canada without him. He’s overhyped by the fanbase. Pulisic when we face top teams is the most important player. Remember the friendly against England. To say he’s more important IMO is silly

  • @trorisk
    @trorisk 2 года назад +5

    To me he is a symbol. Because he is the 1st of the new generation (how is a better overall level than previous generations) of USA soccer players. He attracted more attention because he was the 1st of this new generation of two or three years.

      MLS is already on par with MLB so barely getting into the sport is a massive understatement.
      Soccer is played in high schools and universities and every MLS club does have youth programs so the US does have a wide foundation of young people that play soccer and that are developed in a professionalised environment.
      On the other hand is basketball in germany way way way less popular than soccer in the USA and they don’t even have any sort of youth program for basketball and also don’t put any effort or recourses in the sport.
      So no your comparison is very inaccurate but still the US was never able to produce a player of Nowitzki calibre in soccer.

Marcus Rashford and Dele Ali come to mind since they both had meteoric rises at about the same time but for unknown reasons that can’t be nailed down, both have endured struggles with injuries, not playing well for a long time and fan hatred. Football Iconic.. I was just wondering if you could make a video on when Swindon Town was in the Premier league. I'm a Liverpool fan, but born and live in swindon. I mean, they got promoted and went straight back down, and conceded quite a few goals.Maybe a series of 1 season wonders, or because they let in 100 goals. Many thanks, noel.

    Great profile! Though I do disagree with your choice of words describing the current USMNT as a "golden generation". The current generation deserves hype but not for being good (you can argue that it's actually not good). It deserves hype because it's shows that the US has finally built an infrastructure capable of developing players worthy of playing in the top leagues

    Trust me, this sport has come a long way here in the USA since I first started really watching after WC 94. Back then you couldn’t even find it on TV except in my case getting to watch one Serie A match a week on an obscure cable channel. The run in 98 helped spark more interest then 02 was kind of a setback since the matches were coming on after midnight. 06 was a great WC and then also came a lot more available ways to watch the 4 major European leagues here.
    It takes a generation to really take to a sport both as fans and possible future players. 06 was only 16 year ago so we are seeing with guys like Christian, the start of kids who grew up as soccer first, not an alternative to the other sports played here as youth.
    I should also note, that back when I was a kid in the 80-90s if you played soccer you would get teased here. Like everything though, with guys like Beckham, Ronaldo ect they made the sport popular with females, who woujd otherwise not give a guy who didn’t play American football or basketball the time of day.

      I always say this, even still a fairly small percentage of our athletic talent plays soccer and what percentage it is today is allot higher than before and it shows in the young talent coming up.
      The us has finally started to put money into their youth development too and that helps allot, I think in the next ten years the talent entering top leagues from the United States is going to be rising more and more
      Like you said, it’s been more of a girls sport here for a long time and that’s shown in the USA women’s national success

    • @cuginoeddie8677
      @cuginoeddie8677 Год назад

      @@iillestrs2153 it’s also helps that there are more realistic chances to get into the sport for the average American kid. Baseball has an almost impossible shot where only .01% of kids who play have a shot at the majors. Hockey, you need ice time which isn’t available here, football isn’t easy and basketball forget it, even if you’re good you still have to hit the height lottery

    The upcoming generation of talent from the US is incredibly refreshing as an American that watches European football. I grew up waking up at 7AM to watch Arsenal and that's really the reason I fell in love with the game. Pulisic for sure is the Lebron James of soccer although there arn't many countries that call it soccer anyway.

    I’m 23 now, and I’d say that since I was around 12-13, I knew absolutely nothing of the sport.
    Fucking golf is more popular here.
    However, there is a definite growing trend of consistently solid to amazing talent coming out, and I’m so very happy to be able to show the beautiful game to my children one day, and them not have to be called “gay” or be bullied for liking something different then others.

    As an American I played soccer since I was 9 years old. I can confidently say the sport really is beginning to gain more popularity, younger kids are becoming faster and much more technical than we were when I was young. The next generation of Americans could have a decent shot but I believe it’s more than a couple world cups away, so long as we qualify smh
