  • A worm hole somewhere in the solar system opened up today and unearthed part of the banked slalom run at Del Mar Skate Ranch. This legendary skate spot was thought to have bulldozed back in the 80's but there was some of it left and we got to skate it for one afternoon...Tony Hawk, Kevin Staab, Dave Swift, Ownen Neider, Tom Scharr, Jodie Royak and a few others were lucky enough to be in the right place at the right time,

Kevin has said in a podcast, and Tony agrees, skate until your wheels fall off. Staab has talked about stopping skating long ago to focus on music, only to meet up with Tony again and get re introduced to skating.

@@Nominay you must be young, but if you skate, thank people like this. 140 million is well deserved for the time and effort put in when literally no one cared about skateboarding. Remember the 90s? No skateparks, no big skate industry, no way to make a real career out of skating, then people like Tony Hawk, Andy Mac, Bob Burnquist, Bucky etc made the world pay attention, which led ESPN to continue promoting and building upon the X Games. He skated for decades without making millions and built his name and reputation up enough to be a successful face of a skateboarding game that went on to be one of the most successful franchises in the world, and inspired the next generation to actually attempt that stuff in real life, pushing the sport even further. But sure, shit on him because he made a living off of something that was treated as an outcast kids hobby for 50 years before it became the platform for people like Nyjah to make a real career.

Why did Del Mar get bulldozed? I saw the SPOTS documentary and you could see that Del Mar was that one skate spot that even with its flaws it was awesome. Would be great if they dug it up and rebuilt it. Or at least make a replica of it for the new generation.

There’s something incredibly special about all these legends dropping everything they were doing to go hit this one last time. Tony’s mentioned on his podcast how he’s always endlessly busy, so to make the time to skate this before it got demolished shows how special this place was to him.

Tony, I know you are 6'3" but a disability is not exactly forward motion. A master can see you are misplacing it as youthful exuberance. Skateboarding needs etiquette to break out of the false steps toward learning. That is how greed enters in and we are pushed from our human connection to one another.
Is that why getting higher fails? I would rather learn from watching? It is a classroom right?

Soooooo...was the digging going on to bring the park back to life??? It would be so amazing if some of these pros with money *cough* tony *cough* would bring Del Mar back to life. Tony even said "its still all here" so it would just need renovation...can you imagine how sick it would be to have that back? Most of the younger folk have only experienced the "ramp & stairs" type skatepark, so having the bowls of Del Mar back in order...CMON MAN. The contests would now be televised, bringing in tons of revenue which would insure the parks continued operation. Both skateboards AND bikes...oh how wonderful!

Why the fuck did they tear it apart if it still a useless empty lot today? Why if the owner couldn't pay the lease or whatever that means for a place like this couldn't he just walk away and leave it there? The fact that they can even do this smokes the insurance argument because if that's the case this is still a liability. They should dig it back out and restore it as part of the cultural heritage of southern california and the town this is in.
