My Dad is Kris, who did the Red Oktober Factory! He spent 9 whole months on that board, and I cant be more proud of the guy. Glad he got featured in this video!
Thank you so much for being our eyes and ears. You might not know the depth of gratitude we in your community appreciate giving us a chance to visit the show through your filming. I could not attend this year and you made me feel like I did. A special thanks to you all. 🤗
Truly our pleasure! We enjoy doing the show recaps. It's just a shame we can't get to all the tables. I've seen photos online of really cool tables that we never saw the entire weekend.
Had the pleasure to attend HistoriCon in 1998, 2002, 2004, and 2006; headed west to NashCon in 2000. Was ALWAYS blown away by by the creativity and skills of the game masters ... in addition to their investment of time, $$$, and camaraderie; never was I made to feel "backwards" by any vendor, fellow gamer, or game host. A wonderful gathering of knowledgeable and fun people every single time. Oh, wait a tick ... I do remember an all-night ACW game on 4 tables that got a bit out of hand once the kiddies went to bed and the players cracked open the "hard stuff" and tempers did flare; HMGS organizers handled the dust-up quietly yet firmly; problems disappeared quick the rest of the weekend.
hello! you gents have a wonderful group. you are very lucky. i loved the review of the snappy nappy rules, and the great 1813 campaign. all your content is balanced and interesting. please keep up the great work!
I adore these videos and seeing Historic wargame conventions like this where there is dozens and dozens of different kinds of games and scales but with that unifying energy of everyone being there for the same thing. It's nice to see people come together to enjoy a hobby even if everyone expresses their interest in the hobby differently.
Glad u guys are back! I feel like the army doesn’t want me to be able to come to historicon. I make it to fallin and cold wars and have since 2021 but I’ve had drill twice, an annual training and now a deployment keeping me from historicon! PA guard killing me! Thankfully I’ll get home with 3-4 days to spare right before fallin this year! Fingers crossed and hope to see you boys there!
Thanks for the video from a viewer who was there for your very first episodes. I also belong to the American Battlefield Trust-ABT who you partnered with at Brandywine. I very kindly asked them to focus on more than Gettysburg and the ACW and introduce AWI and War if 1812 content. For LWTV it would be great to see, in addition to battle reports, more on the “hobby” side of the hobby. Miniatures, comparisons, painting tips, building scenery, and all the off camera activity the club members do before the game. I think this would be greatly beneficial to new gamers and perhaps attract the next generation of gamers you often discuss the need for. ABT took on preserving AWI and War of 1812 battle sites because literally no one else would do it. I now ask LWTV to delve into the other aspects of historical war gaming (beyond game play) because literally no one else is doing it. Are you up for the challenge? I am confident you are our best hope. Thanks as always.
Hey!! Thanks for the shout-out for my Ogre games! Had a blast running them - I'm going to be doing more at other cons. Had a great time at Historicon as always. Definitely a must-attend show.
LWTV, it was nice crossing paths with you for a brief chat. Great show recap as always. Great convention, HMGS has made a life-time attendees out of us!
It's a long way across the Atlantic to get to Pennsylvania but I do hope that one day I can afford the trip. Until then, I'm gonna have to rely on you guys to be my eyes and ears there. Great job on this video. A special message for Greg... When I returned to the hobby less than two years ago I gave myself a target. To put on a game at Joy of Six 2025. I have never done anything like that before but, at present I am on track to take the Battle of Chancellorsville to next year's show. I will be using the excellent Altar of Freedom rules. Great ruleset, sir. I'm currently in the middle of a 'dress rehearsal' albeit on a smaller scale (not literally it's still 6mm 😂). I'm putting on the Battle of Gaines Mill at my local library in Goole, Yorkshire on the 162nd anniversary of the battle. It's on a 3x3 table with almost everything (Baccus minis apart) scratchbuilt. I'd like to thank you guys for being such an inspiration. Little Wars TV and Peter Berry of Baccus are founder members of my personal Wargaming Hall of Fame.
Looks terrific and a great video. My wife and I were chatting about Historicon this weekend, rather I was saying I had FOMO about missing it. She asked where in the US it was, so may be persuaded to take a trip next year... Who knows...
STALINGRAD - Battle for the Factories - Largest Battle-game every in my basement on ping-pong sized table - 19 players - had 3 hand-made two-story RUBBLED & Bombed-out gray factory buildings down the length of the table then single-story houses/buildings down both edges with tanks and infantry fighting through-out to capture the MAJORITY TO WIN !! I saw the STALINGRAD Battle displayed there at Historicon (his was more detailed - BRAVO to him) !! I ;ve gotten to GEN-CON once in my life and I get older every year BUT at least we can watch your review videos !!
Welcome back Little Wars!!! I would like to mention the next big HGMS event - FALL IN 2024 taking place in November 1-3, 2024 in Lancaster, PA. I just wanted to mention it for some of your newer viewers who might have never attended a convention before.
Thank you from the West Coast. Throughout the years, I have attended numerous game conventions, mostly in the SF Bay area. Historicon, being one of the largest and best, is on my bucket list. Looking forward to more material from ya'll!
Great stuff Lads, very appreciated indeed. I was there in spirit but not body. I have not been in awhile, so you have inspired me to get down there and roll some dice. Great channel you have there.. Always interesting.
It was good to see everyone there again. One day me and my kids will catch one of your games. It did slow down Saturday this year. It seemed like Saturday’s game list after about 5pm really thinned out. With only 1 game starting at 8pm Saturday.
Thanks for the review. I wish it was easier to get to Historicon. I'm on the west coast and host lots of games locally but getting to Lancaster isn't easy. That aside, over on this side of the country we are also seeing both an increasing in miniature gaming, and convention attendance. KublaCon - a large convention in the San Francisco bay area is usually very light on Thursday/Friday ... but this year was crazy ... which just carried on straight into Sat/Sun as well. Was great to see and experience it.
My sense is that the traffic on Saturday was lighter than that of Thursday and Friday. In fact, I was surprised by the higher than expected (at least by me) turnout on Thursday. Thank you for another great show recap. Now I’m kicking myself for having missed some of the great games that you showed in this video. Keep up the great work guys!
I am absolutely fascinated at what they are thinking about for Hippodrome! I would love to learn more about this as time goes on, and just the idea of it has a buddy and I thinking of things! Great having you here :)
I need to get there next year, within in the last 1 year I got interested into wargaming similar to this and I struggle in my area to find clubs to play in (I’m from and in Illinois) you guys are one of the reasons that I got interested in it, thank you.
Great looking tables and games, of course, but I gotta say that this review feels more upbeat and positive about the future of historical wargames than maybe the last one or two Historicon recaps have been. That seem encouraging?
Historicon has been pretty strong for the last few years. Solid crowds, good vibes, a nice mix of gamers and families. Really, ever since they moved to the downtown Lancaster venue the whole atmosphere has been notably improved. There are family activities and restaurants around, so it's more of a destination than the semi-depressing Valley Forge casino, for example.
Didn't see any of the guys make major new purchases this year--mostly filling out existing collections, paint, basing materials. Some odds and ends at Wally's Basement. I picked up an old issue of The General with a scenario inside to modify for the club during Caesar's Gallic War. It was a pretty light year for acquisitions!
A BRIDGE TOO FAR - We did this battle-game here in K.C. Mo. on a 40-foot long table with 30 Corp tanks and infantry (20mm) starting at one end and Arnhem Bridge at the other end and ALL the rivers, bridges, and towns inbetween to be fought over the 3-day convention to reach the Brit 1st Para at Arnhem !!! :-)
It's been a few years now that things thin out once you get past Saturday dinner. I always rather marveled at how dramatic the parking lots had already thinned out by crack of dawn Sunday. People with looooong drives are perhaps now opting for sleep over dice Saturday evening.
The Sunday crowd is tiny. A lot of vendors pull out Saturday night, too. That's been an issue for awhile. This is the first HCON I can remember where Saturday afternoon seemed to be thinning out, though.
Years ago HMGS tried several initiatives to try to get people to stay over into Sunday. A raffle you had to be present for to win was one, but none of them reversed the trend.
I just started trying to look into war games and all the different versions of table top wargames because it's very confusing and i come across this video about historicon thinking oh wow so theres conventions that would be a cool way to maybe check this out and learn only to read that this took place maybe a 10 minute walk from my house.
