Boy the Patriots had a good 3 year run from 76 to 78 and they should have beaten the Raiders in 76 but that roughing the passer call pretty much kept the Raiders going and instead of 4th and long they had new life.
Yep, I agree. That call in the '76 playoff game against The Raiders was bad. Was it "Sugar Bear" Hamilton? Also, I think the Patriots pounded Oakland that year during the regular season and that was the Raiders only loss.
I was a kid in Connecticut during these years and I didn't Grogan's first name was Steve until I was 10 years old, because everyone called him Fuckin' Grogan.
76-78 best team in NFL and the unluckiest. Those two qualities don't belong in the same time frame. They are my favorite team when healthy Brady had no chance!
1978 PATRIOTS DID BETTER ON THE ROAD! Road losses were to dallas and the fateful miami game where Chuck Fairbanks had resigned prior to the game (used 2 interim coaches for the game) as well as QB Steve Grogan getting injured in the game. The injuries plagued him in the divisional game vs the oilers. That season its hard to say if the steelers were considered unbeatable had the 1978 Patriots faced them for the AFC Championship, but there's no denying that the steelers in 1978 was the best team going into the Super Bowl that season.
@russellguercio3904 These pats didn't have a single back reach 800 yards, but they still ran for over 3,000. This wasn't a one man band. This was a full on team attack
@@patrickthomas8890 They didn't. But that clip of Patriots celebrating at 15:33 happened after they beat Baltimore at Memorial Stadium, not Oakland Coliseum.
@@patrickthomas8890 A few things actually. First 15:06 vs 15:34. Grass was much greener in Oakland than Baltimore. Also compare the auxiliary scoreboards. 15:18 vs 15:33. They were different. And if you look closely at 15:33. The background was Memorial Stadium .
They won because Bert Jones of the BALTIMORE COLTS, three time defending AFC East Champions, missed most of the 78 season with a bad shoulder. Otherwise, it's four straight for the BALTIMORE COLTS!!
watch the 70s raiders and 80s giants ...that was cheating before it was cool ! Look at the leg whip those super 9er teams and the chop blocks of the super broncos
Actually this team was more talented than any pats team and maybe ever. You have to consider rule changes. Touch football was not allowed then. More protection now. Game is not the same.
Do you believe in the Tooth Fairy, too? Hasn't this "cheating" myth been debunked 100 times over by now? Once was in Federal court. What a moron. The only cheaters are the owners who call into Goodell to tell him to frame NE to steal picks to weaken them. Old news at this point.

RIP Sam "BAM" Cunningham #39
The radio announcer is the late, great Gil Santos.
The Voice of The Patriots i might add. He is Greatly missed. And not forgotten.
He was the best.
He was meh.
The New England Patriots of the 70s were my 1st favorite NFL team.
A history of great teams. They stumbled of course, but they have a lineage to be proud of. Too bad Plunket didn't work out.

Steve Grogan one of the toughs QB ever to pla the games!!
Glad TE Russ Francis won a Super Bowl ring with the 49ers in 1984.
Amazing roster! Many would go on to win championships with other teams
Coaching matters apparently!!

There was something about that belt on the Patriots pants that set the Pats uniforms apart.

Sam Cunningham was the reason Alabama finally integrated their football program! He ran roughshod over Bear Bryant's Crimson Tide.
David Posey at 21:19 clutch kick. Way to go, Bud. Go Scots! Hope you are well.
Memorial Stadium in Baltimore. 15:37. Not Oakland Coliseum.
What? Why would the Raiders play a home game in Baltimore?
