My life lived differently than others. I grew up without being repressed. Ages 0-18 I had with a lot of love. From family and I wasn’t afraid. That state made me very aware(negative emotions literally slowly kill you) and I was always filled with love and was so grateful. I wanted to help the world. In reference to your introduction: A lot of philosophy I read during teenage taught me that you can see life in many ways. I chose to laugh at tragedy because I ended up with a positive experience when I watched the news. I was very detached(in the best way) of negative emotion. I am 32 now and I do feel negative emotion. and while the shock of feeling a shocking feeling(you’re going to die) will fill you with relief after being panicked, it isn’t a way to live. Searching for emotions that we are meant to feel is the answer.
It was the most wonderful time of my life where I was fully alive. Just like a free dog vs a beat dog. The happier dog is more aware(alive) because positive emotions make you more alive and well and negative emotions kill you slowly.

When you've been through several existential crisis, depresive episodes and suicidal contemplation days; the very fact of thinking about the moment you're going to die eventually becomes a mundane thought, even thinking about it everyday. Just like any other daily common thing, like having lunch, brushing your teeth, yearning to die soon and hopefully in the next few months or weeks, etc. 😂

A lot of the sadness, angry and pain comes from places of love, Unaccecibles places of love for the present you. Found a new place or found a new way to this places can solve (At least a bit) this feelings of emptiness, its easyer saying than does it, but, i have fait in you stranger, hope you find the wise and the hope that you need ❤
This is one of the most interesting videos I've ever watched. I find myself thinking about similar topics from time to time but it's really cool and fun to be able to conceptualize and visualize them
As someone who has had a tendency to overthink too much and fall into spirals of despair and hopelessness I've had to learn how to pull myself out of them. And it's always been both hilarious and infinitely beautiful how my outlook on life after each of these crisis has been changed to a point where having experienced the crisis seems like a miniscule price to pay for the consequence. I've been down this road many times and at this point in my life I feel very in love with being alive and part of this conscious part of the universe. I'd describe to something similar to Nietzsche's "Amor Fati" where I no longer care if there is pain, life is worth every second, every ache and embarrassment, every misstep and sickness and even death! I would live my life every time, all the time, always. There is nothing more precious to me in this universe than life and love, which from my point of view are functionally synonyms. Great video, I really enjoyed it, it's always good to know that I'm not alone in this view.

I am inspired to hear that you attribute your current outlook on life to the way that you were impacted by and responded to the many spirals of despair that you experienced. And I especially agree with the sentiment that life and love are functionally synonyms--I hope to make this point clearer in the next video (whenever I finally get the time to work on it): the thing that sets apart real life from everything else that pretends to be life is love.
for better for worse, I just think about those who will be saddened by my departure, other than that I care little or not. I do not fear the end I fear that the ones I leave behind have already had their brightest day and that they may not achieve the joy they deserve.
Loved this video! I might have been one of the few who didn’t have an existential crisis in the beginning unfortunately since I went to the beach today with my dog and something so simple still left me feeling utterly content as the clock was ticking by, so even with the prospect of dying, by the last second I closed my eyes and smiled. (That’s not alarming right? A part of me wish I had that exhilaration for living that you aimed to evoke within us but I think I actually just had that this morning since that’s what forced me to get out of the house on a Saturday and appreciate life anyways) Okay but there are some parts of the Adam and Eve story that can be argued contrary to what you said. The serpent told Eve that she would “surely not die” if she ate the apple, for “God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as God, knowing good and evil.” I don’t think Eve ate that apple accepting the prospect of death, rather, she didn’t want to be inferior to god and his knowledge, and thus by gaining his knowledge she might as well be immortal since she is as god herself, the highest part of their hierarchy (the ultimate goal right?) Also, I don’t think Adam and Eve gained the capability of love after eating the apple, if anything they were more open and connected with each other before, when they were not tainted by the fear of practicing evil and the wrongdoing of immodesty. I guess it's there to make people try to remember what a crisis feels like) Also, that is a compelling reading of Adam and Eve (and I am very happy that someone is interested in considering alternate arguments)! I do agree that it makes sense to think that Eve ate the fruit to become like God and gain power, wisdom and immortality like him. However, I think that if you accept that to have been her motivation, then it is difficult to accept that she and Adam felt any kind of "open and connected" love toward each other. If Eve felt open love for Adam, I don't think she would have wanted the power of wisdom that the snake promised her (why gain power and risk destroying the peace you have when you are content with your life?)--the quality of "innocence" seems to be at odds with the action of intentionally striving for power. So if you do take a desire for power/knowledge to be an explanation for Eve's decision, I think it only makes sense to say that they didn't feel love very deeply. So if we accept that Eve wanted power, I think it makes more sense to read Eve as a calculating actor, weighing the benefit of power against the threat of death. I do admit this rational approach does not reflect actual human decision making (for example, Eve could have just been clueless and merely acted because she was told to, which would be a convincing way of understanding what it means for her to be "innocent"), but I chose this approach toward analysis because I think this way of thinking is what led to the adoption of an "existentialist" perspective in the first place. Existentialism as I understand it tries to react against the hyper-rationalizing tendency of the culture from which it arose out of. Thus, I tried to adopt a hyper-rational analysis of Adam and Eve to see where and how the existentialism could have arisen (in other words, where the idea of wisdom and faith came from). Hello my four legged friend 😊You created a wonderful video. Although I don’t agree with everything you said, I think the beauty of philosophy is to plunge into others points of views. I myself am more of a nihilistic/rational person, but I always try to nudge myself into a more existentialistic thinking. Your video definitely helped me understand more about people with a „drive/goal in life“ but I don’t think I am there yet. Hopefully your next videos will educate me further.

Thank you for putting this together. For me the arguments about that last minute to be alive was very thought provoking. I’ve tried to imagine it was well from the perspective of someone who is suicidal and wants to die. My brain is still processing all of this but I feel it has been a useful perspective on understanding suicide better.

I'm not sure if I'm misunderstanding your comment, but I hope that if you are struggling with suicidal thoughts, you can soon personally experience some positive novelty in your life, and maybe be able to feel some of that "faith" that I tried to talk about. Thank you for being willing to consider these kinds of ideas! If you are interested in this topic, you may want to read Dostoevsky's "The Dream of a Ridiculous Man"--it more explicitly talks about suicide, and it was one of the major influences for the ideas in this video (also, it is a very fascinating short story). If you find that you like Dostoevsky, I also recommend reading his short novella, Notes from Underground.
Existential crisis suck but you won’t reach your full potential or truly discover who you are without them. It’s like it forces you to figure shit out, which will end good unless your psychotic or something

@estedDog I disagree with the fact that you try to secularize Kierkegaard's F&T and imply that Kierkegaard was simply claiming the hope of bettering the current situation is what is what is necessary to be faithful (i.e. to be the knight of faith). The knight of faith conjures up the highest good (which in this case is God) and pursues the highest good despite all paradoxical conditions. He doesn't believe he has the power to change whatever he wishes to (otherwise he'd be an egomaniac or delusional), but has resounding hope that the Divine will enable his changing of the circumstances. He is a knight because in the fear of uncertainty he walks forward despite his fear & trembling, but also one of faith because he relies on the divine and one that is not predicated on sort of perspectival shift (e.g. a Nietzschean resolution). Without faith in the Divine, the knight who solely relies on reason, at best, can become the knight of infinite resignation, not the knight of faith.
@@AWellRestedDog Furthermore, I don't think any Kierkegaardian scholar would think Eve exemplified the Knight of Faith. A more apt analogy would be if Eve obeyed despite believing that the Fruit of Knowledge would absolutely make her like God, then she would be the Knight of Faith.

I'll admit that my characterization of faith, especially around 43:23-43:38, splits from Kierkegaard's faith, and that my presentation was a bit deceptive--in hindsight I should have saved those comments for the conclusion section. My goal in that part was to try to identify some element of Kierkegaardian faith that makes faith so important to him (as opposed to making no movement in the first place, or of just infinite resignation). Like I said in the video, I personally found it difficult to understand what Kierkegaard was saying, but I had some idea of a secular version of faith that I could characterize with "hope". That being said, I don't think that your description is all that far from how I characterized faith in my video: I don't think I confused infinite resignation with faith on the basis of relying on reason to derive faith (of course, I may be misremembering what I said). Even if I secularized Kierkegaard, the thing I cared about in the video was to evoke some intuitive sense of the incredible hope and active fight against reason that the knight went through. I feel like identifying that part of Kierkegaardian faith--that feeling of "hope" or intense "passion"--is what really matters for my conclusion about "gaining strength to live through death". Of course, I'm not sure how useful my characterization of faith, which was inspired by Kierkegaard, is for my weird theory of wisdom and faith. And yes, I'll also admit that my example about Eve being "faithful" was flawed. I'll continue to think about if it interfered with my goal of trying to understand what the feeling of "existential crisis" is. Also, I hope I made it clear that I am not trying to pretend to be an expert on anything I talked about. At the time of the video, these ideas were only a few months into being developed, and thinking back now I feel like my ideas were confused (and still are confused). I don't agree with (or honestly remember) everything I said in the video, but I hope that I was able to get some intuitive impression across that there is this really interesting pattern of reacting to death by finding some way to reason our way into being immortal, and that while it is easy to get sucked into those abstract, reason-led ideas of immortality or meaning, at the same time we seem to all care about this completely irrational thing like faith, and maybe those two blurry concepts--reason/wisdom and faith, interact together to make up our human experience. I don't know.
I no longer get that feeling from thinking about death. What does give me that feeling ,however, is thinking if nothing had ever existed. Of course it is a stupid thought as something does exist but its still scary to think about and what I use to meditate on the sensation.

i don't fear death anymore, but i assume that instinctually I'll preserve my life if i have the choice bc i haven't killed myself despite spending most of my life wanting to have an Off button... (I've been homeless, institutionalized, overmedicated at a young age, abused, and I'm formally trained in Zen meditation, lost my speaking voice to multiple surgeries and had to relearn how to speak.) However, I'm afraid of how I'll be treated while I'm senile, bc I'm very autistic and even with my lifelong medical history and diagnosis, people don't know how to treat old ppl unless you give them more money than I'm capable of generating in my lifetime, let alone senile autistic ppl. I'm not afraid of decay, so much as how people react to it.
Thank you for sharing your experience, and I'm very sorry that you've gone through all of that. I agree that the way society reacts to people who have been greatly impacted by experiences like yours is an even more harrowing threat than the abstract threat of death that I talked about in this video. I hope you can find support in your life that will give a good reason to feel less anxiety toward how you'll be treated, and generally I hope society will take its attitudes and actions seriously so that everyone can live a good life. I think that's why taking philosophy and literature seriously is crucially important, because engagement with them is what changes the attitudes and actions of everyone, so that less people have to suffer in the way they are suffering now.
But what about people who don't fear death? Like certain people who commit suicide or people who live really dangerously willingly and with full awareness of the possibility of death at any moment. I don't think that the realisation of death is scary to everyone. I'd be content with dying 10 minutes from now and wouldn't find that much worse than living forever. Being immortal would only be better because there are no deadlines, so there would be more long terms goals i can persue and I could live more chill. However dying a week from now would be much worse than dying 10 minutes from now because within that week I couldn't get any joy from working on long term goals since I would know that I could never finish those
I chose to frame this video as a study of our reaction to death because death is an almost universally feared thing that is out of our control. The thing this video is interested in is really, "what happens when someone is put in a situation that is terrifying to them and is completely out of their control?" The "wisdom" part of my video (chapter 3) responds to the pattern of people trying to gain control over their lives in such a hopeless situation. The "faith" part of my video (chapter 4) tries to respond to how people might try to accept their hopeless situation (and why anyone would even want to give up on trying to control everything). My spiel in the conclusion is about how both wisdom and faith are seriously pursued when someone reacts to any terrifying and out-of-your-control situation. I think this still pertains to people who don't fear death, because those people still encounter situations that are terrifying and out of their control. I hope this response is satisfactory!

I think of this situation alike the hopeless faith in the video. The person commiting suicide knows that they will for sure die but they are content with that- alike abraham. The person still has faith that they will not die even though they know they will. And they know that if they die well- you don't exist to complain. And if they don't or are saved somehow(like divine intervention in abrahams story) that's nice too. This gives them the power to commit the action.

In the part about Greek gods, you fail to mention that the qualities a god possesses were used in everyday speech. Eros, the analog of cupid, was seen as a passion, whether for a person, your work, food, etc. “Aries sided with” whichever side fought more ferociously that day. It’s a unique perspective on immortal vs mortal in the video, but a story mentioning gods intervening is normal
"I figure that anything that happens to everybody just can't be that bad." I mean, it depends on what you mean by "bad". If you use the term bad, in a relative sort of sense, that is if a situation you are in is "worse" than the average of the "control group" you associate yourself with. For example, if you live in america, for you not having electricity for 2 weeks and no internet, no air conditioning, would be a very bad situation, but that would be a normal situation in africa. If you use the term bad in that sense, then by definition anything that happens to everyone cannot be bad. But, I'm pretty sure we don't use the term bad in that sense only. For example, if a super-intelligent alien species, came to our solar system, and decided to eradicate humanity then that would be bad, even though that's happening to everyone around you! So, I guess, in that sense, no, you're wrong. Anything that happens to everybody can be bad!!

People in the comments who are feeling somewhat normal about the topic seem to forget that the no matter how adjusted you become to the idea of death you will never overcome the state of dying feeling your last moments or the sensations of your body failing or being injured to the point of death we will all cope in thinking that we are ok with it

I don't quite understand how the serpent convinced Adam and Eve to adopt subjectivity if they weren't already subjective. The serpent only had abstraction to convince them to adopt abstraction.
I feel as if I was born in an existential crisis. I don't want to endeavor for "I". "I" is simply my avatar. The only real virtue in the world, is the pursuit of balance- that's what "good" is.
I am not planning to, because I feel that it is already discussed a lot on RUclips. I also think there are some other interesting ways to think about humans, "authenticity" and the "good life" that are not as common as the ideas of people like Camus and Sartre. In the third video, I am planning to focus more on Heidegger's idea of being-in-the-world and maybe some themes in his later essays, then on parts of Beauvoir's Second Sex and Arendt's Human Condition (that I have yet to read closer and decide on).
Excellent video. Very well scripted. Is it only me who still doesn´t understand how peoplethroughout the centuries and all over the world could have equated being remembered with being immortal? I mean, why would you care about being remembered if you´re not gonna be there to hear people tell our story? Thank you, and that's a good question! I think being remembered after you die (like Achilleus hopes will happen) is a form of extending your control over the world beyond life, and that's why it's thought of as being a form of immortality. When you are remembered by the world you leave behind (even if it's just being remembered for no reason other than because you're really famous), your name has an influence over everyone who hears it. That influence may be something incredibly small--for example, Achilleus' story may inspire the youth to become great warriors by serving as a role model for what a great warrior looks like. This is a real form of power that Achilleus has over the world, even when he is dead. Likewise, someone whose name is remembered (and nothing else about them is) has control over the world because their name enters into the language that peope use. To say "google it" uses "google" without necessarily making you aware of the person who coined that name, but the way that "google" sounds still impacts your everyday use of the word. If you squint hard enough, this power that you have after death is kind of like the power that you have when you are alive. To live is to have power over things, so what if... having any form of power forever means you live forever? It's a weird abstraction of what it means to live that has made being remembered be thought of as being immortal.

That state made me very aware(negative emotions literally slowly kill you) and I was always filled with love and was so grateful. I wanted to help the world.
In reference to your introduction:
A lot of philosophy I read during teenage taught me that you can see life in many ways. I chose to laugh at tragedy because I ended up with a positive experience when I watched the news. I was very detached(in the best way) of negative emotion. I am 32 now and I do feel negative emotion. and while the shock of feeling a shocking feeling(you’re going to die) will fill you with relief after being panicked, it isn’t a way to live. Searching for emotions that we are meant to feel is the answer.
It was the most wonderful time of my life where I was fully alive.
Just like a free dog vs a beat dog. The happier dog is more aware(alive) because positive emotions make you more alive and well and negative emotions kill you slowly.

When you've been through several existential crisis, depresive episodes and suicidal contemplation days; the very fact of thinking about the moment you're going to die eventually becomes a mundane thought, even thinking about it everyday. Just like any other daily common thing, like having lunch, brushing your teeth, yearning to die soon and hopefully in the next few months or weeks, etc. 😂

Honestly didn't think you would upload when I subscribed. I'm not disappointed.
As someone who has had a tendency to overthink too much and fall into spirals of despair and hopelessness I've had to learn how to pull myself out of them. And it's always been both hilarious and infinitely beautiful how my outlook on life after each of these crisis has been changed to a point where having experienced the crisis seems like a miniscule price to pay for the consequence. I've been down this road many times and at this point in my life I feel very in love with being alive and part of this conscious part of the universe. I'd describe to something similar to Nietzsche's "Amor Fati" where I no longer care if there is pain, life is worth every second, every ache and embarrassment, every misstep and sickness and even death! I would live my life every time, all the time, always. There is nothing more precious to me in this universe than life and love, which from my point of view are functionally synonyms. Great video, I really enjoyed it, it's always good to know that I'm not alone in this view.

Loved this video! I might have been one of the few who didn’t have an existential crisis in the beginning unfortunately since I went to the beach today with my dog and something so simple still left me feeling utterly content as the clock was ticking by, so even with the prospect of dying, by the last second I closed my eyes and smiled. (That’s not alarming right? A part of me wish I had that exhilaration for living that you aimed to evoke within us but I think I actually just had that this morning since that’s what forced me to get out of the house on a Saturday and appreciate life anyways)
Okay but there are some parts of the Adam and Eve story that can be argued contrary to what you said. The serpent told Eve that she would “surely not die” if she ate the apple, for “God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as God, knowing good and evil.” I don’t think Eve ate that apple accepting the prospect of death, rather, she didn’t want to be inferior to god and his knowledge, and thus by gaining his knowledge she might as well be immortal since she is as god herself, the highest part of their hierarchy (the ultimate goal right?) Also, I don’t think Adam and Eve gained the capability of love after eating the apple, if anything they were more open and connected with each other before, when they were not tainted by the fear of practicing evil and the wrongdoing of immodesty. Also, that is a compelling reading of Adam and Eve (and I am very happy that someone is interested in considering alternate arguments)! I do agree that it makes sense to think that Eve ate the fruit to become like God and gain power, wisdom and immortality like him. However, I think that if you accept that to have been her motivation, then it is difficult to accept that she and Adam felt any kind of "open and connected" love toward each other. If Eve felt open love for Adam, I don't think she would have wanted the power of wisdom that the snake promised her (why gain power and risk destroying the peace you have when you are content with your life?)--the quality of "innocence" seems to be at odds with the action of intentionally striving for power. So if you do take a desire for power/knowledge to be an explanation for Eve's decision, I think it only makes sense to say that they didn't feel love very deeply.
So if we accept that Eve wanted power, I think it makes more sense to read Eve as a calculating actor, weighing the benefit of power against the threat of death. I do admit this rational approach does not reflect actual human decision making (for example, Eve could have just been clueless and merely acted because she was told to, which would be a convincing way of understanding what it means for her to be "innocent"), but I chose this approach toward analysis because I think this way of thinking is what led to the adoption of an "existentialist" perspective in the first place. Existentialism as I understand it tries to react against the hyper-rationalizing tendency of the culture from which it arose out of. Thus, I tried to adopt a hyper-rational analysis of Adam and Eve to see where and how the existentialism could have arisen (in other words, where the idea of wisdom and faith came from).

Hello my four legged friend 😊You created a wonderful video. Although I don’t agree with everything you said, I think the beauty of philosophy is to plunge into others points of views. I myself am more of a nihilistic/rational person, but I always try to nudge myself into a more existentialistic thinking. Your video definitely helped me understand more about people with a „drive/goal in life“ but I don’t think I am there yet. Hopefully your next videos will educate me further.

If you are interested in this topic, you may want to read Dostoevsky's "The Dream of a Ridiculous Man"--it more explicitly talks about suicide, and it was one of the major influences for the ideas in this video (also, it is a very fascinating short story). If you find that you like Dostoevsky, I also recommend reading his short novella, Notes from Underground.

@estedDog I disagree with the fact that you try to secularize Kierkegaard's F&T and imply that Kierkegaard was simply claiming the hope of bettering the current situation is what is what is necessary to be faithful (i.e. to be the knight of faith).
The knight of faith conjures up the highest good (which in this case is God) and pursues the highest good despite all paradoxical conditions. He doesn't believe he has the power to change whatever he wishes to (otherwise he'd be an egomaniac or delusional), but has resounding hope that the Divine will enable his changing of the circumstances. He is a knight because in the fear of uncertainty he walks forward despite his fear & trembling, but also one of faith because he relies on the divine and one that is not predicated on sort of perspectival shift (e.g. a Nietzschean resolution). Without faith in the Divine, the knight who solely relies on reason, at best, can become the knight of infinite resignation, not the knight of faith.
@@AWellRestedDog Furthermore, I don't think any Kierkegaardian scholar would think Eve exemplified the Knight of Faith. A more apt analogy would be if Eve obeyed despite believing that the Fruit of Knowledge would absolutely make her like God, then she would be the Knight of Faith.

I'll admit that my characterization of faith, especially around 43:23-43:38, splits from Kierkegaard's faith, and that my presentation was a bit deceptive--in hindsight I should have saved those comments for the conclusion section. My goal in that part was to try to identify some element of Kierkegaardian faith that makes faith so important to him (as opposed to making no movement in the first place, or of just infinite resignation). Like I said in the video, I personally found it difficult to understand what Kierkegaard was saying, but I had some idea of a secular version of faith that I could characterize with "hope". That being said, I don't think that your description is all that far from how I characterized faith in my video: I don't think I confused infinite resignation with faith on the basis of relying on reason to derive faith (of course, I may be misremembering what I said).
Even if I secularized Kierkegaard, the thing I cared about in the video was to evoke some intuitive sense of the incredible hope and active fight against reason that the knight went through. I feel like identifying that part of Kierkegaardian faith--that feeling of "hope" or intense "passion"--is what really matters for my conclusion about "gaining strength to live through death". Of course, I'm not sure how useful my characterization of faith, which was inspired by Kierkegaard, is for my weird theory of wisdom and faith.
And yes, I'll also admit that my example about Eve being "faithful" was flawed. I'll continue to think about if it interfered with my goal of trying to understand what the feeling of "existential crisis" is.
Also, I hope I made it clear that I am not trying to pretend to be an expert on anything I talked about. At the time of the video, these ideas were only a few months into being developed, and thinking back now I feel like my ideas were confused (and still are confused). I don't agree with (or honestly remember) everything I said in the video, but I hope that I was able to get some intuitive impression across that there is this really interesting pattern of reacting to death by finding some way to reason our way into being immortal, and that while it is easy to get sucked into those abstract, reason-led ideas of immortality or meaning, at the same time we seem to all care about this completely irrational thing like faith, and maybe those two blurry concepts--reason/wisdom and faith, interact together to make up our human experience. I don't know.
I no longer get that feeling from thinking about death. What does give me that feeling ,however, is thinking if nothing had ever existed. Of course it is a stupid thought as something does exist but its still scary to think about and what I use to meditate on the sensation.

i don't fear death anymore, but i assume that instinctually I'll preserve my life if i have the choice bc i haven't killed myself despite spending most of my life wanting to have an Off button... (I've been homeless, institutionalized, overmedicated at a young age, abused, and I'm formally trained in Zen meditation, lost my speaking voice to multiple surgeries and had to relearn how to speak.)
However, I'm afraid of how I'll be treated while I'm senile, bc I'm very autistic and even with my lifelong medical history and diagnosis, people don't know how to treat old ppl unless you give them more money than I'm capable of generating in my lifetime, let alone senile autistic ppl.
I'm not afraid of decay, so much as how people react to it.

I agree that the way society reacts to people who have been greatly impacted by experiences like yours is an even more harrowing threat than the abstract threat of death that I talked about in this video. I hope you can find support in your life that will give a good reason to feel less anxiety toward how you'll be treated, and generally I hope society will take its attitudes and actions seriously so that everyone can live a good life. I think that's why taking philosophy and literature seriously is crucially important, because engagement with them is what changes the attitudes and actions of everyone, so that less people have to suffer in the way they are suffering now.

But what about people who don't fear death? Like certain people who commit suicide or people who live really dangerously willingly and with full awareness of the possibility of death at any moment. I don't think that the realisation of death is scary to everyone. I'd be content with dying 10 minutes from now and wouldn't find that much worse than living forever. Being immortal would only be better because there are no deadlines, so there would be more long terms goals i can persue and I could live more chill. However dying a week from now would be much worse than dying 10 minutes from now because within that week I couldn't get any joy from working on long term goals since I would know that I could never finish those
I chose to frame this video as a study of our reaction to death because death is an almost universally feared thing that is out of our control. The thing this video is interested in is really, "what happens when someone is put in a situation that is terrifying to them and is completely out of their control?" The "wisdom" part of my video (chapter 3) responds to the pattern of people trying to gain control over their lives in such a hopeless situation. The "faith" part of my video (chapter 4) tries to respond to how people might try to accept their hopeless situation (and why anyone would even want to give up on trying to control everything). My spiel in the conclusion is about how both wisdom and faith are seriously pursued when someone reacts to any terrifying and out-of-your-control situation.
I think this still pertains to people who don't fear death, because those people still encounter situations that are terrifying and out of their control. I hope this response is satisfactory!

I think of this situation alike the hopeless faith in the video. The person commiting suicide knows that they will for sure die but they are content with that- alike abraham. The person still has faith that they will not die even though they know they will. And they know that if they die well- you don't exist to complain. And if they don't or are saved somehow(like divine intervention in abrahams story) that's nice too. This gives them the power to commit the action.

In the part about Greek gods, you fail to mention that the qualities a god possesses were used in everyday speech. Eros, the analog of cupid, was seen as a passion, whether for a person, your work, food, etc. “Aries sided with” whichever side fought more ferociously that day. It’s a unique perspective on immortal vs mortal in the video, but a story mentioning gods intervening is normal

If you use the term bad, in a relative sort of sense, that is if a situation you are in is "worse" than the average of the "control group" you associate yourself with. For example, if you live in america, for you not having electricity for 2 weeks and no internet, no air conditioning, would be a very bad situation, but that would be a normal situation in africa.
If you use the term bad in that sense, then by definition anything that happens to everyone cannot be bad. But, I'm pretty sure we don't use the term bad in that sense only. For example, if a super-intelligent alien species, came to our solar system, and decided to eradicate humanity then that would be bad, even though that's happening to everyone around you! So, I guess, in that sense, no, you're wrong. Anything that happens to everybody can be bad!!

I am not planning to, because I feel that it is already discussed a lot on RUclips. I also think there are some other interesting ways to think about humans, "authenticity" and the "good life" that are not as common as the ideas of people like Camus and Sartre. In the third video, I am planning to focus more on Heidegger's idea of being-in-the-world and maybe some themes in his later essays, then on parts of Beauvoir's Second Sex and Arendt's Human Condition (that I have yet to read closer and decide on).

Is it only me who still doesn´t understand how peoplethroughout the centuries and all over the world could have equated being remembered with being immortal? I mean, why would you care about being remembered if you´re not gonna be there to hear people tell our story? I understand the desire to leave something useful and/or beautiful for the following generations. That would be basic altruísm. But being remembered? Have people just been decieving themselves into believing that peoples memories have anything to do with them? I just don´t get it...
Thank you, and that's a good question! I think being remembered after you die (like Achilleus hopes will happen) is a form of extending your control over the world beyond life, and that's why it's thought of as being a form of immortality. When you are remembered by the world you leave behind (even if it's just being remembered for no reason other than because you're really famous), your name has an influence over everyone who hears it. That influence may be something incredibly small--for example, Achilleus' story may inspire the youth to become great warriors by serving as a role model for what a great warrior looks like. This is a real form of power that Achilleus has over the world, even when he is dead. Likewise, someone whose name is remembered (and nothing else about them is) has control over the world because their name enters into the language that peope use. To say "google it" uses "google" without necessarily making you aware of the person who coined that name, but the way that "google" sounds still impacts your everyday use of the word.
If you squint hard enough, this power that you have after death is kind of like the power that you have when you are alive. To live is to have power over things, so what if... having any form of power forever means you live forever? It's a weird abstraction of what it means to live that has made being remembered be thought of as being immortal.
