An old large brass padlock does the same as the copper and will absorb heat as well so making less distortion, have a look at Graham' s work from @xacoupeguy

Padlocks are a bit awkward to fit and clamp into certain areas though.
With the flattened copper pipe it can be shaped and bent to fit whatever shape you’re welding on.
