In this painting video, I talk about the importance of the background in oil painting. How it can make or break and improves the mood of your painting. I talk specifically about background here as I believe it is one of the main things we have to pay more attention to when painting portraits. I talk more about my painting techniques on my previous videos like how I normally start painting and what colour palate I use.

Finally you're back! Wow. I can see why this is your new favorite painting. The pink background really works well with this portrait. And Evelina is soo beautiful looking and the pink background compliments her expression so nicely. Love it 99x!

    Hello!
I really love your portraits and was wondering if you use any technique to get the proportions right? I think it's one of the hardest parts about painting/drawing and I usually use a grid to get it right but would like to be able to sketch free-handed. Do you have any tips? :)

Hi Rebecca, thank you so much. My tips are: keep using the grid system. But overtime, make it bigger, instead of 1x1, make it 2x2”. Bigger is harder. Do it at your own pace, eventually, do rule of thirds, or usually (not always) I put a crosshair on the face. Compare a lot with the reference photograph, from a far, from up close, put the reference side by side, use mirror, measure measure measure. Last tip: there is nothing wrong with grid, or tracing, my next video, I will be doing commission portrait painting, and I just trace the reference because I want to save time, too many commissions right now. Hope that helps!
