This is my new commission oil painting, portrait of Jamie. In this video I'm talking about the process of creating this oil painting from start to finish. From the imprimatura as the first layer, then the umber sketch to map out the composition and tonal value, then how I did the colour layers to create a photo realistic oil painting portrait.
All musics in this video: Composed by me

Thank you!
Thank you so much for this very helpful video. I've been trying to work with only one layer of paint, finishing as I go but I get stuck at some points. Your way takes all the pressure off so that by painting in thin layers I could see exactly what to fix at each stage and not worry that each stage is permanent. Then it would be as if the painting was telling me what it needed me to do next. :) I shall try this. I also love the simplicity of your flesh colors.
Oh Hello Joyce! Thank you so much for coming by here. I'm really glad the video is helpful. Good luck with your painting and don't hesitate to ask anything. I'll be happy to help. 😃
@@armadaliuart Thank you so much! I do have questions: What brand of oil paint and thinner do you use? What proportion of thinner to paint do you use for your first underpainting and do you add more oil for each layer? I'm concerned about having enough binder in the thin layers so my art will be archival. Do you use any kind of fast dry mediums to speed the drying times? Thanks for any help. You are very kind.
@@joycehandersonfriends3225 1. Rembrandt because I like the consistency. 2. All of my mediums (OMS , Liquin) are from Winsor Newton. 3. For the imprimatura and umber sketch in this video, I mix the paint with a lot of OMS, it feels like doing watercolor. For the colour layers, I don't use OMS, but instead a very small amount of Liquin just to help my paint to get buttery feel so it's easier to paint with. Small amount of liquin is enough to speed up it's drying time. 4. No I don't add more oils, from what I've learned, it's totally okay to paint lean over lean and thin over thin. And that's what I'm doing. 5. No need to worry about binder, even it's totally fine to paint straight from the tube. And because I paint in many layers, the paint film is not thin anymore. 6. Yes, otherwise the paint will dry every 2 weeks, I use W&N liquin and my slowest paint (titanium white) dries in 2 days. Hope that helps and answer your questions! 😀😀
