My daughter has been diagnosed at 17 with bipolar 2. I know every day is a battle for her. I tell her I'm proud of her for fighting to be ok. I believe it helps her to keep fighting. She distracts herself with exercise and playing sports. Exercise helps get the brain chemicals going.

I’m newly diagnosed and this is the best advice I can give to anyone. My hypomania is moderate but my depression is severe. I know I don’t need to wait until I’m hypomanic and feeling better to do the things I need/want to do. So I tell myself, “just do it sad”. Even when I’m sad, I still need to eat, take out the trash, study, shower, etc. For some reason it helps and I feel like I’m being gentle with myself.

19 years married to my bipolar spouse.
My advice? Each day, find something your spouse does well & praise them! Bipolar folk seem to need a steady stream of encouragement. (Like a lot a lot 😉)
Remember as the spouse of a bipolar, you’re not a therapist…you’re a life coach.
Never Judge your spouse! That always leads to a downward spiral.
Positive reinforcement Works, but get it in your head that as a couple you never “arrive” at the station. The real goal is helping your spouse stay on the track and moving even if it’s 2 Mph. (3.2 Kph for metric folks 😂)
Humor & consistency is the glue your spouse needs the most.
Thank you Robert! You ‘da Man!!!!

@@MamaCancer23 do you know it’s not all one-sided. My wife is so good at melting my brain with how fast her emotions flip-flop. but the more I give of myself to her that means I’m working on myself and I always benefit.
The more my wife works on her self-esteem the more she falls in love all over again with me. That, in turn, motivates me to be a better man and encourage others.
I’m really starting to wonder if I should start my own RUclips channel even if it’s only a few hundred of us pouring out positive vibes?!!!

I’ll say it like this … if sick leave is a part of your compensation package at your job … use it. That’s what it’s for. I’m speaking from experience. Burnout is real. Especially when you’re in a massive episode. I’m 41. I’ve had bipolar since 1993. Likely before. Being kind to yourself is good too. Same with journaling (I need to do that more). Also lean on your support system. But not too much. My support system are my parents, brother, and sister-in-law (in-law for documentation only). My niece and nephew too. But my niece is nine and my nephew is six. They don’t need to know about this yet. Though I do want to tell them one day. But with the consent of my brother and sister-in-law. Their parents. I just thought of something else. Forgiveness is important. Forgiving others is a gift we give ourselves. But self forgiveness is also important. Ironically I’m working on this too.
    I’m Andrew.

Morning bipolar depression is a huge obstacle in my life every single day making my entire body feel immobilized. I am rapid cycling and living with that is a huge challenge. Stretching after waking up (of course that hard part is to stop thinking and just gettin up from bed) helped me to feel "life" in my body and my brain. Stretching immeditely starts to awake every part of my body in a very healthy way, I mean, is not a hypomanic energy but a healthy one. Try some stretching, soft but deep... you try more were you feel that depression feeling restricting your body. The more you insist carefully and progressively where you find depression body pain is hurting the more you feel relieve after doing stretching. Feel free to write if you want to know more about how i do it, I am not and expert, just a person trying to survive creating my own home-made ways.

During my last depressive episode, 35 days in hospital and over 12 months to finally start to be independent again. It was a first hand view to see how COVID effects the brain and with Bipolar it is a life threating combination. I entered in to a pact will all my supports to check out - IPSRT - That's the fancy name for just simply a basic time table. Eg Breakfast between 8-9, flexible Stuff like "exercise". NOT 30 minutes of cardio. Its helped me to do the basics when I was depressed. I found it an encouragement to help stop and do the tasks when you are manic. Just the basics eat, go to bed, get up, exercise, take meds. Self education about Bipolar should be life long. I learnt more about bipolar in the last 12 months then my total experience to date.

Some times that means just to keep company, to smile... That brings me some relief and some sense of being in a real world. Believe that ALL people are valuable humans, even when their BEHAVIOUR is harmful.

As someone who suffers BP-disease for years, here are my 2 cents: take your meds (except if they make things worse, I quit an anti-depressant which made me ill), get yourself enough sleep (8 hours of 'real' sleep), stop watching pointless video's (delete TikTok immediately), stop drinking/drugs or at least use them in moderation, excercise outside (e.g. go out for a walk, it gets your body going and sets a positive tone for the rest of your day), quit caffeine, take less sugars, change to a healthy diet step-by-step, eat less meat and add more vegetables (more a diet thing for me), get your blood levels tested (I discovered that my vitamin D was way too low), test your medication levels like Lithium on a regular basis and do the things that eliminate your negative thoughts. A healthy body means a healthy mind and vice versa. Take small steps as you are the one in control of your own process. You know what's best for you, don't let others judgements and opinions decide what's best for you. Even if it comes from loved ones. Don't blame yourself if you fail when trying to get better: new day, new chances. The stairway of life is one where everybody falls off now and then, no one exempt. Don't be another statistic, be the exeption. A helpful channel I can recommend besides this one is @betterideas which helped me understanding things a lot of people suffer from. You can do it Kings & Queens. Cheers, Jerome.

I just found your page when I did a search because I need community, to not feel alone & to get some good tips with managing my bipolar disorder. This page is a God send for me 🥹🙏🏾 So thank you!!!!
My advice would be: You are not a bad parent because you have a down day or days. Sometimes you’ll need to rest longer, to not cook dinner but order takeout instead & that’s ok! Sometimes you won’t be in the mood to play but that’s ok! When you DO feel better you can make up for those things then. Also, don’t forget to hug yourself! I mean really! I do it now & it soothes me sooo much 💚

Aww, I really love your advice! I can really resonate! I was in a pretty bad depressed episode and one of my triggers was seeing the dishes piled up and not having enough energy to even get out of bed! I was tired of feeling bad about myself and decided to only use biodegradable paper plates and utensils. I can just throw them away and my sink is always clean. There is a ted talk you should watch called how to do laundry while depressed. Thank you for this. I found that if I avoid stress as much as possible to keep calm I feel a lot better. Know your limitations. Don't let people push you into a bad state of mind. Read the side f/x warnings of meds and educate yourself on your condition. A hectic environment is difficult for me. Edited to add: I try to keep a good heart and be encouraging. My therapist told me true beauty comes from inside when I told her I was upset about losing my looks. Also, I need to know how to explain about bipolar disorder to a 9 year old child? Friends of mine are dealing with this issue.

What I try to do is make to-do lists, and then I will determine specific timeslots to be allotted to each item on my to-do list. I attend to the to-do list as much as my fluctuating mood will allow, so I keep it flexible, and try to balance my productivity with my longevity. I find it’s often useful as well to begin my to-do lists with something physical yet simple, like cleaning up my room a little, just to get me going and to tick one thing off the list.
Another thing that helps me sometimes is taking some time away from the noise, that is, all of the mostly superfluous activity that our electronic devices keep us tethered to nowadays. I’ve found that it can allow my mind to settle down and sort of reboot, clear itself of junk, so to speak. And it can also give you a lot more time and energy to use toward more productive things for a while, which adds to your positive emotion and decreases anxiety regarding “getting things done.” I can’t always do these things, but a lot of the time I can, and it’s worth it when I can.

I am 32 years old, female and currently struggling with Bipolar type 2.
Racing muddy thoughts are an all day challenge for me. In the moment, distractions help. Fake it till you make it, helps in the moment. But those intrusive thoughts don’t go away with distractions. They come back, sometimes 10xs harder than the last episode.
It’s a daily battle telling myself whatever I’m thinking is not real. I’m gas lighting my own thoughts/ beliefs and in return I feel unworthy. Unworthy to have feelings, thoughts and beliefs because they’re destructive.
When I do have feelings, thoughts and beliefs- I tell myself they’re not real. I believe that I am not real myself. That I don’t deserve to be real. Because being real is destructive.
How can I love myself when I’m telling myself every day, I cannot be my true self. I cannot feel my true feelings, I cannot act on my true beliefs, I cannot be me.
It’s hard. Every day it’s hard.

Juat as recent as last week, I was so far down, that i started the wheels rolling, to stop fighting. I texted my therapist and asked her if i were to become a statistic to bipolar, would she take my horse. She texted back..CALL ME! We were on the phone fior a solid 2 hours while she listened to me unload. She was a calm and steady sail during my storm. We talked about ways to protect myself. Handing all possetion and cintrol of my medications to my husband. and When it came time fir my meds, then he will give them to me. After she talked me down, i went fir a 2 hr walk with my dog. I would stop now and then to look up at the stars. They were telling me to keep walking, and dint give up the fight. I finished my walk and went home to sleep off my attempt.

Hi Linda =) It's not a very common side effect, but it does happen. You aren't the only one I've heard this from.
It's super important to mention it to your doctor as soon as you can... Hair loss can also be related to nutritional deficiencies, hormonal changes, stress, or other health conditions. Your doctor can run tests to rule out / figure out what the cause is. If it's related to the Wellbutrin, there are a lot of med options out there now. I hope you find something that works well for you.
It would be great to stay connected... I'll include a link below to my private community on Patreon. It's where you can message me directly anytime (and access a lot of content I don't post on RUclips).

Hi there, I'm so sorry to hear this has been your experience. It can be hard to get help sometimes and it shouldn't be that way. Even if you can't get meds, if there is any way you can get into some type of therapy program, 1:1 counseling or group therapy, that might be helpful. I'm not sure if you need a referral or not in the U.K. ... I live in the US and haven't usually needed a referral but it's different everywhere. If you aren't able to see a therapist it might be helpful to look into local support groups. I attended one in person for a long time and it was helpful. You may also find it helpful to join Rob's private community on Patreon. After you join you can get access to not only exclusive content and the ability to communicate with Rob directly, but also a wonderful support community which I have found very helpful, and I've met some wonderful people there who I now consider friends. I don’t know if this would be of any help, but I recently read a book called "You Are Not Alone".Written by Dr. Ken Duckworth, whose own entry into psychiatry and journey to become the Chief Medical Officer for the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI)was inspired by his father's lifelong battle with bipolar disorder. This comprehensive guide pairs medical expertise with the empathy of someone who gets it. He wrote it mainly for people living in the U.S., but there is an English edition that gives information for people living in the U.K. There is a chapter called "How Do I Find Help". You may want to check it out. Wishing you the best!

    Did you ever get violent?

Sadly - yes, but under rare / extreme circumstances. I used to run a chain of Karate schools so I'm extraordinarily careful about not using it to hurt someone. The only time I've been violent was during psychosis, and most often was to specifically defend myself.

Therapy? Like pay huge amounts of money to a person for listening for one hour, or not even one hour, 45 minutes. Great

You obviously have never done therapy before. If you are sick right now, stay away from the keyboard. You are simply looking for a fight online and I refuse to participate.

You have to forgive your friends & family members who don't want to understand your Bipolar disorder. My sister believes that Satan made me Bipolar thus she feels that she will learn nothing from your videos. This kind of thinking is misguided & hurtful unfortunately.

With that logic, my sister became diabetic because of Satan. My goodness, that’s stinking thinking.
Love ALL of Robert’s videos. Honest, insightful, and above all filled with hope. Stay away from social media, bipolar message boards, they all stink to high heaven. They always ask the same thing, “ how do I know when it’s time to leave my spouse, etc.” Just a big pile of turds who have zero desire to understand anything that’s true about bipolar struggles and ways to help. They all just seem like narcissist.
Missy, I think you are correct that you do have to forgive your family and most importantly you have to love yourself and work every minute of every day on your own walk.
It’s funny, whether you’re bipolar or not if you work on yourself, you’ll start to find peace.

My mother has been dragging my brother to every priest from here to East Africa, because she believes "God will heal him." He has been misusing substances and has been diagnosed with substance induced psychosis and likely has a major mood disorder. She has spent oodles amount of money flying him here, buying him cars, paying off his debt etc. He's become financially dependent on her. He is 33 years old and has never held a job for more than a few months. And he is still sick. I try to tell her this is not a money problem, and it cannot be fixed with prayer and holy water. It is a mental health and addiction problem, that needs to be addressed. I love my mother but she drives me insane with this nonsense🙂

Reduce caffeine, and you will sleep, and not be up all night doing things you should do the next day. Think about making the purchase for a day, wait a day, to decide if you really need it. They aren’t going to hurt you, let them in your life, don’t push everyone away thinking they will hurt you.
