  • There's a lot of speculation about the provisional GDC license that people are talking about in the dentistry world. It allows clinicians from overseas to skip taking the ORE completely, which sounds like great news! So let's dive into it and discuss the facts, because there is a lot to digest here before you decide whether this route is ideal for you or not

Very relevant topic to discuss, especially as we find out in the upcoming months how things will unravel. One issue that may happen is a struggle to find "mentors" for these dentists. More needs to be done to incentivise more experienced dentists with becoming a mentor.

The GDC responded today by welcoming the decision but it made it very clear that registrants will have to undergo some form of
'registration assessment' so that incompetent practitioners cannot misuse this pathway. Hence, it is not equivalent to skipping the ORE/LDS but rather a simplified version of the said exams.
Also, the GDC indicated that the registrants 'might' have to make arrangements for their practice supervisor. So it'll be, if implemented, a complex pathway to follow. Still, the best route is the ORE and LDS and I feel the preparation for these exams will never go in vain as one thing is certain that an assessment will exist regardless of the outcome of discussions around provisional registration.
Also, is this route opens, pertaining to a large number of applicants for this route, will an overseas general dentist stand a chance against overseas specialists who are preparing to move to the UK but were unable to crack the ORE/LDS?
I feel that serious candidates must refrain from this topic unless a rock-solid provision is available as it will interfere with their preparation. For months to come, anything surrounding this topic is just speculation.
Thank you so much for making this video.

Great update, thank you so much for providing it, I'll read into it today. And I feel due to the temporary nature of this provisional license, it will never make up for the ORE/LDS as you've quite rightly stated. Therefore, I think general dentists still have a great chance if they take the more traditional route. Anyone looking to abuse it will inevitably still need to complete their ORE/LDS exam by a set period or they'll have to return to their country

I'm in the same boat as you my friend. I'm from the UK and studying in the EU. If it is mainland Europe then most likely you'll be exempt. Feel free to message me on Instagram @the_stu_dent and I can help you confirm it
