  • Welcome back future Khans, Emperors, Jarls and Sultans of Calradia! We're continuing to show our late-game campaign including huge battles, and winning(most) of these battles by deploying advanced tactics to overcome superior enemy forces. Our entire channel is dedicated to helping players improve their field command and if that's your desire, or just want to see huge, dramatic battles, you've come to the right place.
    In this episode we'll explore a very popular mod, Realistic Battle Mod (RBM), which can potentially make enormous changes to your Bannerlord experience and battle tactics, altering everything from archery arrow trajectory, damage interface with armor, major changes to weapon stats, artificial intelligence, even potential major changes to how combat proceeds, with generally lower damage, more 'stuns' and 'knockdowns'. In this large battle, we'll show a battle against the Aserai with some RBM settings on, but not all. it's generally a slower, more strategic battle and I'll share my thoughts on RBM as well in the episode.
    Please comment, like and subscribe if you're interested in more of my ultra-late-game campaign, that may end up ending in utter despair, but that's the challenge of it. Any challenge where success is assured is no challenge at all.
    My campaign is an extremely late-game campaign where I am resolved to give no peace to these scum Kingdoms attacking me - seven of the eight have been at war for years, with only Sturgia at a neutral stance. My family of warriors is now large though and with what remaining strength and valor we can must, we stand against the map of Calradia.
    Join me on this adventure if you like huge battles, the use of advanced tactical maneuvers and intense Bannerlord gameplay, and subscribe to my channel if you want to follow along. This campaign is very lightly modded:
    I use four mods:
    Lord Retinue Uptier(Makes the enemy forces stronger, much less peasants and lower ranked troops)
    www.nexusmods....
    Improved AI Troops(Also makes enemy lords and their armies tougher by giving them a higher daily xp rate. This means you'll routinely face armies with HUGE numbers of the highest tier units, sometimes four or five times the normal amount in vanilla Bannerlord): www.nexusmods....
    Death for all: This mod allows you to set the rate at which nobles die more often. I want both a harder challenging late-game but also a more realistic game. If you're cut down with a massive aserai two-handed axe, you shouldn't just be injured 99.9% of the time. It's a very customizable mod so you can just a little more death or set the death rate so high you get several deaths every battle. The number I often like is '10', some deaths but not a massacre of nobles...
    www.nexusmods....
    I also use the Dismemberment Plus Mod: It's highly customizable and works seamlessly with the new beta(and versions back to 1.28). I thoroughly recommend it if you enjoy carnage!:
    steamcommunity...
    I've also used Realistic Battle Mod in the past and highly recommend it for Ai and battle realism BUT I find the pace too slow for my taste and the AI is actually rather predictable after a half dozen battles. Still I wanted to put a plug in for it here, it's a GREAT mod and highly configurable. www.nexusmods....
    Much of the music and inspiration for this and other videos in the channel are inspired by Epic History TV - probably THE best channel on youtube(and the internet for that matter) covering the Napoleonic wars. With amazing work Epic History TV takes you through the dramatic and incredibly story of Napoleon covering all of his most famous battles. I HIGHLY recommend it.

    The consistency and predictability problem could be solved with something like "commander profiles" attributed somewhat randomly through army leaders. Like, making small changes on how the AI acts on the battles like, more aggressive or passive, more stationary or more likely to avance, and attribute this to the profiles.

      I completely agree, I'd love to see more dynamism in the AI and variance but I also think if I made a video of the things I could see improving Bannerlord it might be a two hour video. Fortunately there seem to be brilliant modders out there working as hard or harder than Talewords to make most of these dreams a reality. Given the graphics engine, combat physics and enormously open-ended, highly mod-able, I think Bannerlord may have a VERY long shelf/playability life, kinda like Skyrim and other highly mod-able games.

    Hearing him talk about Napoleonic tactics while playing bannerlord made me realize how damn cool a game set in the Late Rennaissance, Napoleonic, or Victorian era with bannerlord's gameplay style would be. Still formation warfare, with artillery in pitched battles, and rank based firing lines would work so well with bannerlord field command.

    On the topic of knights and cavalry… I think the biggest issue with that in this game is the expense. They’re too cheap to amass both for the player and AI. IMO. Horses are expensive. Armor is expensive.
    Consider, an infantry man costs 20 denars to recruit. He comes basically in robes and farm tools.
    A vlandia/khuzait/aesarai noble costs 200 to recruit yet comes with a horse. To buy said horse in towns would easily cost 250+
    The wage of noble cavalrymen is equal among tiers.
    I think cavalry SHOULD be OP. But they SHOULD cost as much as 5 or more foot troops.

    • @HeadlessHorsemanProductions
      @HeadlessHorsemanProductions  7 месяцев назад +12

      Another comment that I couldn't agree more with. Any student of history in the manorial system knows that it literally took a village to pay for a knight and his small retinue to have armor and a war horse, yet in many battles of Bannerlord there are as many knights as there are foot troops...

    • @TheOriganalPoppit
      @TheOriganalPoppit 7 месяцев назад

      I think it's more of an issue of quantity rather than cost itself. I believe there are more castles than towns, and each castle always has two villages, of which atleast 2 notables will spawn the noble troop line. If they reduced this to only 1 notable spawning noble troops, you would effectively half the number of heavily armored Knights on the field, and increase infantry & ranged units.
      Vlandia and Khuzait would still field a larger number of cavalry compared to peers, but I thinks that's fine as it's their faction identity. View the reduced cost (by not buying a horse) as an abstraction of realm laws and culture, if it's still an issue. Making significant economic changes (increased recruitment cost) can have severe unintended consequences in Bannerlord.

    • @HeadlessHorsemanProductions
      @HeadlessHorsemanProductions  7 месяцев назад

      I'd favor both changes, making noble units both less available and more expensive. I might be persuaded to protect my Fian Champions in battle if they were both rare AND expensive.
      Certainly any major change would likely have major unbalancing effects. Currently with vanilla Bannerlord, Infantry, Cavalry and Archers have some decent rock-paper-scissor balance, though that's obviously not historically accurate...@@TheOriganalPoppit

    • @Pentagathusosaurus
      @Pentagathusosaurus 7 месяцев назад

      Another issue is that cavalry increase party speed no matter what type of cavalry they are, and don't afaik increase food requirements. A knights warhorse needs grain, won't be able to travel in barding all day and won't necessarily be travelling faster than a light infantry. That knight would almost certainly have at least one separate riding mount as well as some pack animals to carry armour
      Same with heavy and light infantry. In a realistic battle heavily armoured infantry will crush lightly armoured ones, but the most successful armies of the late medieval period in Europe were the Ottomans and the Hungarian Black Army, which didn't tend to use super heavily armoured troops as much. Because being able to march fast, raid and skirmish with the enemy is important IRL in ways that don't really matter in Bannerlord.
      I'm actually hoping to create some systems in a Warband mod to try and give greater strategic use for light cavalry and infantry, whilst making heavy units the monsters they should be in battles, but I'm still very much in the planning stages there

    I like the posture system, I don't see anyone else use it though. And a ChatGPT-like adaptable AI would be so sick, I've been bringing this up to my wife and brother a lot.
    Also I love how the AI tried to punish you around the 12:00 mark when you're positioning your troops. It's little stuff like regrouping and this that make me really enjoy RBM. I like the repositioning even if it does get predictable because it makes the fights feel less like I'm just running through people, scattering them, and then picking them off in a slaughter. Just feels more rewarding.

    I recently tried RBM for the first time and was shook how amazing the AI was. Honestly, for the first time it felt like the enemy AI was actively trying to move out of my traps and formations (which before almost always worked without much effort due to dumb AI) but now, I actually had think and react to enemy's action. And even when I died, my troops themselves instead of running around like zombies, stood their ground and fought strategically which was very surprising and for the first time a sat and watched an entire battle after I died. Though I was surprised in another one of my battles where archers were so useless it was funny that they seriously didn't kill almost anyone but were destroyed by the enemy cavalry. But the only problem I have is the mounted units and the time it takes for a battle. I think RBM as bundle of features is great, but bannerlord is not really the right game for it. Bannerlord is kind of a free for all for all the lords and commanders with settlements to besiege and several wars to fight. In terms of wars, nations and kingdoms, it is not really very realistic (although some mods change a lot of it). Even normally one has to fight like 10 - 20 wars per war and considering RBM increases the time by nearly twice or thrice sometimes, it can become tedious very quickly to go through even a single war. Though if it was something like where two nations bring most of their armies together to have single or a few wars here and there, then I would say that it is worth it. But I haven't played any sieges yet so I can't even Imagine how tedious they will be.

    • @HeadlessHorsemanProductions
      @HeadlessHorsemanProductions  4 месяца назад +1

      The diplomacy and enemy AI in the campaign is probably the worst part of Bannerlord. For the most part, they act like mad dogs and rampage about attacking whatever is convenient without any strategic overview or long-term plan. Maybe that will change with generative AI and we'll weep and beg for the easier AI of yesteryear. Part of the reasons I have somewhat contrived campaigns on the channel is because of this - most advanced players simply and systematically roll over the map once they get momentum...

From the main menu, personally I like using the AI(if you're going to use it), as well as changes to the module itself which alter things like how melee weapons impact against armor(less damage), slower movement, etc. - For a more REALISTIC but somewhat unbalanced game(favors cavalry, then melee, archers greatly weakened).

    Idk is it just me or rbm delegate command is very messy, especially the friendly AIs in battle. On vanilla if i delegate my troops with the larger army that im trying to help, they follow the steps of the large army. In rbm my troops walk to the front by themselves, its all chaotic and unmanagable cus the friendly AI army literally put their archers far on the frontline that the enemy cavalry wiped them out while their infantries hiding in the forest, like 200 meters apart. Not sure if its because of the AI or because the bannerlord item & troop mod overhaul is messing it up.

    • @HeadlessHorsemanProductions
      @HeadlessHorsemanProductions  5 месяцев назад +1

      Probably a combination and conflict of AI's in this instance. It's possible that some code overwrites the others and the delegate basically turns your battle into Gotham city after the Joker was let loose. I rarely delegate command so I haven't seen this yet in RBM, but it's good to know it's broken. Fortunately RBM has some really hard working people behind it so maybe in the future it will go better? My own hope would be that after watching some of our instructional videos, you won't delegate ANYONE in the future, and just command your army like a boss. :)

      RBM is best used imho together with the better pikes mod and another mod that adds more pikes to some troop trees. That way you can have the historically accurate cav AND the pikes that counter them. I usually have to tone down the better pikes mod becayse it makes them REALLY deadly, too deadly but its there to counter the OP cav.

    Only thing good about the mod is better battles. RBM will change stats on items so you can waste more time equipping your characters. My favorite feature is found in the better combat. Who doesn't like spending 30 mins trying to get past one person when they block 100% of your hits.Maybe they'll add a "trip on a rock" feature so they block less. If this doesn't equal joy for you also then you must be doing something wrong

    • @HeadlessHorsemanProductions
      @HeadlessHorsemanProductions  7 месяцев назад +1

      Can't say I disagree with you. While I HAVE experienced genuinely better battles in the past with RBM, lately when people ask me to film and narrate videos with RBM, I'm pretty regularly disappointed. One battle was REALLY painful. The enemy stayed WAAAY back defensive, even though they attacked me, then when I did attack, the perma-reformed their army, getting massacred in the process.

    • @TheCrazymic
      @TheCrazymic 7 месяцев назад +1

      @ssHorsemanProductions IF the enemy army lacks for Cav and archers they will mass infantry and hug the high ground waiting on you. You can take 0 loss's buy keeping your infantry in shieldwall out of their range. Then just send up your archers is only way to force them to advance on you. If you have horse archers behind them also you lose no men just backup your foot archers, infantry as needed. You may have to kill their few cav yourself or let them die to your shieldwall. Only exception i find is IF they outnumber you then they'll attack everytime.
      In time the mod will only get better I wish the modders could see all this feedback
