Truth! I’ve never met a person on a plant based diet who has kidney stones. The only people I know who have suffered from this are heavy meat eaters. I realize this is just my observation, but I wonder if this is due to dysbiosis of the gut.

I eat a serving of green leafy veggies every day, always cooked. Smoothies are dangerous because you can consume way too much at one time and it's raw. Now I know why I never had a problem with kidney stones.

After 7 years as a vegetarian, 2 years as a vegan, and no family history of them, I developed kidney stones at age 66. It was a shock, and I wouldn't wish them on my worst enemy, either! I had begun starting each day with a large spinach based smoothie when I went vegan. Almonds were my preferred snack, and I drank more black iced tea than I did water. My urologist assumes it was this combination, along with not enough calcium that caused the kidney stones. I now consume no more than 100 oxalates a day, drink lots of water, and get my calcium from fortified plant milks and lots of leafy greens. And though one of the stones is still sitting in my right kidney, it has not grown and I haven't developed any new stones since I started eating differently.

That's correct, we need to inform people that drinking plenty of fluids and getting enough calcium is enough to almost entirely eliminate this issue. Aswell as eating lots of fruits and veggies to keep your urine alkaline

The oxalate crystals also travel and deposit and accumulate in the joints, especially the big toe, and cause inflammation and tremendous pain similar to arthritis.

I always thought that you had to blanch or boil the spinach and then DISCARD the water because that's where the oxalate went. Therefore, if you just chuck the raw spinach into the mix then the oxalate will be cooked out, but wont it then be staying in the food? I've never heard of the oxalates actually being 'destroyed'.

You are correct, the oxalates dissolve into the water. One study showed that an assessment of the oxalate content of cooking water used for boiling and steaming revealed an approximately 100% recovery of oxalate losses.

So cook the spinach separately and strain away the water?@@thedocandchef
