- Allotment Update October 2024, Allotment Diary, Allotment Gardening
This is essentially a series of video diaries showing the development of my allotment plot.
The plot size is 16.1metres long and 12.1 metres wide. I took the decision, based upon my previous allotment experience, to create raised beds throughout the whole site. The larger beds are 6 metres in length with the smaller beds being 3.6 metres in length. All beds being 1.2 metres wide.
The allotment has been created on old grazing land where the soil is mainly clay, so doesn't drain well in winter and then shrinks and cracks in summer. Clay does retain nutrients well so with some work it can become great.
I take an honest and pragmatic view on the successes and failures of the crop that I am trying to grow.

Lovely flowers
@@RawLondonGardener much appreciated 🌼
That allotment is beautiful. What county is it in please? Dahlias are stunning. I love their fresh smell. Do you get to keep the tubers or do you have trouble with rotting off?

Hi Jane.
Thanks for watching and the message.
I’m based in Essex so I have to lift the Dahlia tubers or they tend to rot, we have heavy clay soil.
I’m glad you like the look of the allotment, the flowers certainly add a lot of colour.
I hope your plants have performed well for you.
All the best 🌸🌼
Them Dahlias just stunning, please share the name of the plant (the purple one), you have a nice variety of pepper plants, will you overwinter them? Thanks for your time in showing us around your allotment and garden. Sam

Hi Sam, thanks for the watch and the many questions 🤣
The Dahlia is called ‘Barberry Surprise’. It’s a new one for me where I was given 1 plant, although I managed to get a cutting going to take into winter. Apparently it’s hard to overwinter well as it doesn’t readily form a tuber. Let’s see how it does.
I’m going to overwinter some of the better Chillies and bin the rest. Kind of how I normally do things.
I have already bought some fresh seed of a few of the peppers that I’ve been growing, from saved seed, for a few years to make sure I get back to a more true to type variety. If that makes sense.
Glad you are liking the tours.
All the best, and thanks again for watching 🌶️🪴
Thanks for the quick reply Ian and sorry about the many questions 😂. Your channel is fantastic and I am learning some much about gardening stuff. I will try to get some of the Dahlia plants you have mentioned. Happy gardening 😎

Glad the videos are helping too.
If you go to the community section of my channel I put on some Dahlia pictures, listing the varieties. That may be of interest for looking them up to get.
Do you lift the Dahlia tubers over winter? If so what month do you do this?
@@Mattleerichards Hi and thanks for watching, and the message.
Yes I lift the Dahlia tubers, normally once we have had the first one or two frosts.
Generally I only keep one tuber of each as that is enough to take cuttings from.
If you want to learn a bit more then I have previously made videos on how I do my lifting and cleaning etc. This is the link to the most recent one though, hopefully the link works from comments.
