People may consider total ankle surgery when they've been diagnosed with ankle arthritis that has failed other treatments such as bracing, injections and therapy.
What is recovery like from a total ankle replacement?
Total ankle recovery usually entails a short term of non-weight bearing or protective weight bearing in a splint, followed by a few weeks of weight bearing in a boot with physical therapy. But most of my patients are back in their regular shoe around two months after surgery.
How long will my total ankle last?
Like all joint replacements, total ankles have the risk of needing a revision or even a conversion diffusion in the future, however, most total ankles now, as we've improved our technology, are lasting up to 15-20 years with an 80% 15 year survival rate.
