  • CHI Health psychiatrists Arun Sharma, MD, Imad Alsakaf, MD and Roberto Cervantes, MD, discuss indications and effectiveness of electroconvulsive therapy or ECT, as well as what to expect during your procedure.
ECT is one of the safest and most effective treatments available for severe mental health conditions.
It is used primarily for treatment-resistant depression and can also be used for bipolar depression, bipolar mania, catatonia (where rapid response is required), or mental illness during pregnancy.
The efficacy of ECT is 60-80% for most indications.
ECT is performed under general anesthesia and is currently offered at CHI Health Immanuel in Omaha, NE.
If medications are not working for you, you may be a candidate for ECT. Discuss with your health care provider.
