But one of the things that I find amazing about it is that it applies to so many other things too. I’m only 24 but this song really hits me because I find it to be the story of anyone who feels like they’re falling out with the world around them. Like they no longer have a place because how they’ve spent their life is no longer how the world works and they’re being forced to either adapt or fall away. That’s how I feel on a daily basis. The more the world changes the less connected I feel to it and society and I find myself always trying to figure out how the life I’ve lived for the short time I’ve lived it can be fit into it now.

      "No"

      When they do get something done, Maynard tries to write lyrics and melodies that capture the same feeling the instrumentals do. Damned good.

      @Tim Brandt i agree to this so so much. It's such a difficult thing to smoothly transition into the things tool does. It's so complex that people don't see it and just think it's simple. It did happen to me straight up.
    I had never gotten into Tool. Had listened to all their albums at least once back 2 or 3 years ago, but it was a "it's cool, but doens't quite do it for me" kind of reaction. Strange given that it's a style of music I really enjoy in general.
    About a month and a half ago I was in the gym, didn't feel like listening to anything in particular and thought "let's do some Tool". Played the first album. And sure enough, it was a combo of me having to do nothing else other than paying attention to the music and that it sounded damn good in those headphones, but they went right fucking into my brain.
    Since then I've been on a Tool rampage listening to them like 75% of the time I'm listening to music (which is many hours of the day). And I've both listened to and grabbed my guitar to play Pneuma don't even wanna know how many times.
    In a matter of a day Tool jumped into my top favourite bands. I'ts quite insane how great their music can sound once they do click.

Many people don't have the attention span to engage with the music on that time scale. This tune brought me to tears the first time I rode it. The sense of loss I felt at the first faux ending at about 7 mins was unbelievably deep, and the elation that followed as it continued without a pause was equally high. The second faux ending with the measure of silence, again, felt like a friend had died, when they kicked back in for the last 2 minutes I was legit screaming "YEAH!!!!! IT'S NOT OVER!!!!" while driving alone down the highway. So filling.

    From a technical standpoint you should listen to Tempest. That tune is quite possibly one of the best they have written because it is like a retrospective of all their music; all styles in one 15 minute epic. Also, Descending is pretty killer except that it sounds like 2 separate songs put together. The first half Maynard is probably at his best lyrically, and the second half is pure instrumental craziness. There's so much intricacy in the way they create their music that takes someone who really understands music construction in order to understand. And by no means am I trying to gatekeep Tool, I think everyone can enjoy it, but in order to appreciate it you need to analyze it in a similar way that you guys do

    • @canturo3051
      @canturo3051 5 лет назад +4

      I think that is why they have fended off the streaming platforms because they themselves do not believe their music should be background noise. I totally agree, the way that Lateralus was written in Fibonacci sequence is just mind blowing, I can see how anyone can do it (maybe) but for it to actually be an incredible song with true meaning is just unreal. I think Ryan and George are very objective and try to analyze without holding a certain candle to any one genre, truly unbiased one might say.

    • @fadedsun303
      @fadedsun303 5 лет назад

      @@canturo3051 That's not why. They didn't really know how to navigate that space for their music. They had been out of the loop for the last 10+ years. They probably didn't understand how that would benefit them, and didn't want to jump into it. Just because the music is streamed, doesn't mean you're not paying attention to it. I could throw on a record and still passively listen to the music the same way I could if I streamed it.

    • @canturo3051
      @canturo3051 5 лет назад +2

      @@fadedsun303 I am not arguing with you but at this point you can google their lawsuit situation and see that the hiatus was caused by a contract dispute or some technicality or something that gave their record label the proceeds from live and streamed music, not sure exactly how that worked. In 2006 when Pandora, Spotify and other streaming platforms were taking shape, they slowed down tours and in 2008ish they stopped altogether. It wasn't until their legal crap from their label had finished, that they were able to write music as a band again and began touring more heavily. So the issue wasn't after the hiatus it was the cause of it but your reasoning is correct, I don't think they fully understood the value of the streaming platforms until their label screwed them out of the profits from it. In Maynards book and video as well as a few interviews with Adam, I read the reasoning was more of a spiritual one. At the time I don't think legally they were able to discuss the intricacies and details of the numerous lawsuits and battles, I just like to think with the way they write and perform as well as its effect, the music is much more than background noise as they stated.

    This song helped me retire on my own terms from the Army. Had a long career but at the end, relevant and consequential really rung through. Who the hell makes a Ponce De Leon reference count like that. Feeling time bearing down, Amazing. Culling Voices is also amazing. Hope you enjoyed the concert. Saw them , for the second time on this tour, the next night in Phoenix and absolutely destroyed the place, even better than the first show.

    This one resonates with me on a much more personal level than almost anything else on the album...Pneuma is phenomenal, but Invincible touches themes lyrically that hit me right where I am in life right now. Trying to recapture youth as we age, wanting to remain relevant...it pairs with the title track (let go of fear) to make the perfect soundtrack for me, and where I am now.

    I don't think that discussion about "what song do you like better" makes much sense (in case like these). If you like a song, it will serve you in a unique specific way. It's related to your mind and emotions at the moment. You don't need two (or more) similar songs in the same album when they have different messages! Tool is awesome at this, you listen an entire album and can relate to any song, becase they bring a rich variety of sounds and subjects!

      Where i agree Danny is nearly untouchable on the drums, Tool works like a clock. Each individual cog works to move the overall product. Saying any one person of a band is the 'mvp' or even of a sports team for instance. Is sort of taking away from the overall effort of the others who worked to make it great and even in some cases worked to make a certain person or area of a song look great. Just never made much sense to me.

    First of all: You guys are the only reactors on youtube who can make a 40 minute video I don't skip around on.
    Second: I'm a pro sound engineer and since you guys talked a little bit about the production quality of your videos put a high pass filter on your mics. Every time you hit the table there's a 50hz ring getting through.
    Third: Since it seems at this point, with how many tool reactions you've done, you two understand and are part of the tool army. Welcome. On your own time (because what I'm about to suggest would be too long for a video) sit down with your gear and listen to each of the Tool albums in chronological order from Opiate to Fear Inoculum. Being the massive Tool fan I am, even I hadn't done this for the longest time until I made it a nightly ritual for the next 6 nights. Opiate, Undertow, AEnima, Lateralus, 10,000 Days, Fear Inoculum. Each of the albums has it's own unique sound signature and you can hear the musical seeds planted in the album prior. It's cool to see how their sound evolved as a band especially starting from Opiate where that EP is closer to punk than anything else for it's time and ending (for now) with Fear Inoculum which in my opinion has the most psychedelic sound of their albums. Strong recommendation to any other Tool fans that read this.
