This song has a very deep personal meaning and association for me that has little to do with the common interpretation of the lyrics. I can rarely listen to it without crying. My daughter, when pregnant with my grandson, had a very big scare where she started to go into early labor at 23 weeks. She called me from the hospital and I could hear the fear in her voice as she told me that she needed me to come be with her. I leapt into my car and flew down the highway. A few minutes after getting into the car, through the fog of terror, and tears and prayers, I realized that Invincible was playing. My gramdson had already been named- Atrayu- a warrior's name. This song suddenly told me that our little Warrior would prevail- he would be Invincible. And he did. And he is. And I'll always remember that day when I hear this.
I am not usually a lyrics person, but this song......it just speaks to me! I am an old man. My body is wrecked from 25 years of hard work with no ergonomics. I am full of metal from many surgeries. I live with chronic pain, so, "Beating tired bones, Tripping through remember when, Once invincible, Now the armor's wearing thin, Heavy shield down....." is me to a core!! Of course this is Tool, so what it means to me might not be what they meant at all! :)
I saw them live in February at TD Garden and this was their last song. Maynard mentioned his age and couldn't believe he was still doing this at 57. So your assessment is spot on!
man, 25 years in hard labor sounds unreal to me. probably cause i’m only 22 🤣 only had some broken bones and some fillings but besides that nothing artificial in my body. i can’t imagine how these lyrics resonate with other people like yourself, but it makes me want to stay healthy and “invincible” as long as i possibly can, so i can continue to carry the heavy shield as long as i need to. long life to you my my friend, i hope you still live it up as much as you possibly can!!
Hard to believe that this album wasn't well recieved by a lot of the hardcore fan base. This album screams maturity! The lyrics, the musicianship, song structures, the theme and the production values all showcase the evolution of the band. Now that this concludes their commitment to a record label, it will be interesting to see if and how far they're willing to push the limits of their music to a new horizon. This band has pushed and exceeded every conventional and contemporary limit as to what's possible, having any remaining handcuffs removed, sure opens the doors to a lot wonder and what ifs... Thanks again for sharing your dopamine rush with the rest of us. Looking forward to your next installment. ✌🤘
eye think if you got into Tool pre-Aenima, you are probably a punk at heart, and the anger and energy of the early stuff is where your heart is. that they have become so progressive post-Aenima is of course evolution in full effect, and they have mastered their own sound on this album to perfection imho. there's part of me (sorry) that knows without doubt that Undertow is Tool's greatest emotional outpouring, but as a musician and lover of brilliantly crafted soundscapes and music, the next installment i am always stoked to hear. for me FI is a reassuring continuation of form and the thirteen years it took to make it means that this is probably about as complex and polished as music of this sort has ever been.
You wait, give it a few more years and it will be understood that this album was on the same tier as Lateralus. An album like this takes time to reveal its secrets. All the people chirping the first week of release due to their own misguided expectations are going to be a distant memory. This album is a masterpiece through and through. Gets better with every listen.
Watch, the next Tool is gonna be full of radio hits just as a final epic "bet you _really_ miss this now but fuck you" to the record company who'd be all "Why didn't they do that for uus!?" 🤣
I actually use the digitech drop pedal in my rig, but forgot that the original whammy pedal also goes up - so I hadn't considered that was happening! That explains why the tone felt different to a regular guitar solo!
Fucking Tool!!!! 30 years later.....so absolutely awesome!!!!! There is no band on the planet that can run with these guys....cerebral, plotted and accurate......gut punch
Adam plays mostly in drop D tuning. This song is the highlight of Fear Inoculum for me, because lyrically it just resonates so strongly with me. I love the whole thing, but this one really hits me.
I’ve listened to this track at least a few hundred times and I still get the same feeling. One of the best tracks that I have every listened to. Now here comes the crazy part. Culling Voices, Descending, & 7empest are even better. I really enjoy your reactions, keep ‘em coming!!!
Notice the cadence of the beat is like someone trying to walk or march but is tired/fatigued like a tired struggling warrior. :) Knowing Maynard hears these songs before writing lyrics makes me love the way his brain works. :)
That ending though. The warrior got his second wind and he is ready to put it all on the table . Ugh makes me cry I hope this isn't actually their swan song.
Yeah, I’m with you there. I got exactly the same feeling. You could almost see the guy flagging beneath his armour but somehow summoning up some more energy to get a second wind towards the end. So visual.
I cannot decide if I like Invincible or Pneuma the most. Both are absolute masterpieces. What I love about both songs is how the guys “lego” the songs together, at least Adam and Justin. They have like 3 riffs each that they tweak and mix and experiment with. And in the end they come up with two near 10-minute songs that doesn’t sound boring or repetitive. Also, Danny is an octopus god and Maynard has a golden pen and voice.
The term Masterpiece is so overused but both Invincible and Pneuma are exactly that absolute masterpieces, oh and I don't know who engineered this album but the sound of Danny's kit is unlike anything else I have ever heard its just phenomenal
Got tickets to the Vegas show Jan 23 , getting my big toe cut off this Tuesday, asked the surgeon if I should sell my tickets, he asked maybe, who you going to go see? I said Tool and he said absolutely not I’ll get you there.
I’ve been obsessively playing this song on my guitar for over a year new haha, it’s the first thing I play every time I pick up my acoustic. Something about the simplicity just satisfies my brain
Just fyi, Maynard/Tool mentioned they intentionally make the vocals sound equal or slightly behind the music that way you can hear and take in the instruments/music 1st and then come back to them to dig into the lyrics...so yeah their focus is the music as a whole first.
Another class reaction, like everyone else I am really enjoying you discover this album. First person I've seen notice the bass just 'poking' through, love that bit!
@@JWSoundworks2 Hopefuly when you get to the lyrics it will make a lot more sense, just how incredible is everything put together and how the lyrics completes the art.
Adam said that he often hears Justin come up with a sick bass riff, and he'll take it and give Justin HIS part. And then sometimes Danny will play a guitar or bass section
Apparently that happened with Descending. Justin wrote the opening tune as a bass part. Adam took it and they swapped. Caused some issues, that song ended up being the longest to get the final version and most rehearsed, and by the end none of them wanted to play it for a while. At least that's what Justin said in an interview.
This album is a rare treasure for a number of reasons. For a band who were blowing minds in the 90s to still be together is incredible. For them to release an album this good after all these years is also very rare. So many of my favourite bands from the era split up, went too experimental or just started sounding old and repetitive but Tool has even improved on their previous effort here… just my opinion.
I saw them last year and for whatever reason, acoustics of the building speaker placement etc., the bass was just a bit louder than it should have been. I mean I always knew Justin was an absolute master of his trade but this little engineering "mistake" gave me a whole new perspective/insight into all the crazy stuff Justin actually does. I guess they don't call him the Wizard for nuthin'.

Hey John, glad you enjoy your TOOL journey ! Keep it up ! Just don't have a heart attack from all the syncopations ahah (the bass ;) ). Some details you might find relevant to better grasp the TOOL universe. For the guitar (but also for the bass), Adam tunes in Drop D that's why the E string is lower than standard tuning and it gives this heaviness. He likes open strings too. But you might have noticed also that the guitar is very bright and distinguishable, it's because Adam tweaks a lot with the EQ, mids and highs to have this heaviness mixed with this bright guitar tone. Among other things, he has this Diezel VH4 Amp he can also tweak with the EQ, mids (not a lot of gain in general I noticed). His 1979 Les Paul has Seymour Duncan pickups on the bridge that gives this powerful sound. And as you also noticed he uses a lot palm muting and pull-off techniques. For the middle section "solo", keep in mind that TOOL are composed of 4 members, each having their own part. As you clearly hear Adam on the guitar, this is Justin and his bass, with a whammy (if I'm correct). He is such a killer bass player. Finally, the synths are played by Adam most of the time. You can hear in Descending and even in previous songs. They have a regular keyboard but they also have a foot synths that Adam plays when he is playing the guitar. But here with Invincible, it's Danny who's playing the "synth" part. In live footage you can see it but if you pay attention you can deduce since Adam is the only one playing, no drums. As you said, they compliment each other so well. The guitar can be the percussions, the bass can be the soloist and the drums can lead as a guitar would. That's why TOOL is like no other band. Looking forward to your reaction on Descending and 7empest. As a guitarist, you should appreciate those two. "One" word to qualify these two songs : guitar effects.
Morning coffee and Tool. Life is good. Is Tool the missing food group. I think so. I thought my wifi stalled at the end. Just you collecting your brain. Classic Tool face.
Also, that solo that you referenced about being 'buried' at 14:34 is Justin on the bass. I'm sure you are aware of that, I just thought I'd mention it since you didn't
I also wondered if some part of the drumming and tempo scheme was intended to relate to military cadence. If the warrior is going into battle, this makes sense to me, and is a great way to build up intensity in the song. Loved this and related to it.
As a fan since 93' who listens to something of theirs most days. This is one of my favourites. Was the first one to click for me on the new album, followed by Culling Voices. Looking forward to you experiencing the test of the album 👍
Just came here after watching them playing yesterday. The precision and control are almost all there, the energy and power are even more pronounced live.
For a period of 4 yrs, I was one of the world's top FPS PC gamers. Now, with a terminal illness and a long list of other maladies which have stolen my competence from me, the sense of inevitable futility in reluctantly accepting my loss is unshakeable in this song.
Yep. This album makes me happy, also. It’s hard to believe that someone could make music sound this powerful. But…. Tool does it. Their music doesn’t even sound human. They’re from a race more superior than ours. They tap into a part of the mind that I didn’t know existed. It’s pretty remarkable, to say the least.
Loved your comments, John. Nice you picking the bass shinning in drums minor intervals. I also react to good music as you do. I believe this album is so mature... it seems to me that they decided to use only what worked better in the last decades... Great album and great band.

What an absolute joy. Loved watching you hear this for the first time. I first heard this on a treadmill and found myself suddenly running. I'm not a runner. I've since become a runner....mostly because of this song. You may need to listen to it a few more times to see the genius of the buildups and the overall journey, but for a first listen, you picked up on a TON of stuff. The groove at 18:12 completely freaked me out...had never heard anything like it. "Keep doing that guys, don't change." I felt exactly the same way. CHANGE NOTHING...JUST KEEP GOING! (Both you, and the song) :) EDIT: 20:42 is also insane, as you quick realized.
Saw them perform this live in February, and I felt like my soul floated out of my body. There is no describing Tool accurately to one that has never experienced their music. Its a spiritual experience for me.
"My face is sore and it's making me happy". One of the best TOOL reaction lines ever! They are just amazing and Invincible is my favorite song on the new album.
I've been listening to this band since Undertow released and the end of this song has to be one of the pinnacles of their library. I mean, I love the whole song, but that ending... I used to hang out in an underground music/skate shop (skate boarding wasn't so popular/tolerated back then) and they got copies of Undertow on release day and played it. I think I might've seen a video before on Alternative Nation or something, but they played it in the shop and I was hooked.
Wow, this is exactly how i feel about lyrics in songs. The singing is another instrument......first time in my 40 years I have had someone share this sentiment......
Adam has a unique technique for the chug parts where he palm mutes a note on the lowest string (DADGBE), pulls it off, then drags to pull the open A string for a quick triplet. He uses that in quite a few songs, but the masterpiece for this technique is Jambe (10,000 Days album) That song is a masterpiece, guaranteed to melt your face off!
I love love love your reactions to TOOL songs! They are my favorite and have seen them a few times and will be again this November 15th back in Boston Mass 😃
1992...chilling at U of Delaware Main St....some dude slow-crawls by me and he has Prison Sex on the radio I would say a bunch of other shit, but that drive-by.... that 'passing of Tool'.... I went on to see that band ('93-'13) over 52 times. Waterloo Village NJ was the first Lollapalooza bullshit that I saw them and knew they were gonna break out
Another great one….enjoying your take on these songs. Your speechless happiness at the end there was exactly how I felt after hearing this album when it came out. You have some gems coming up! Enjoy!
Love this... a reaction from a musician..and a pretty damn good one. Appreciates the nuances, and the art....and the difficulty keeping up...timing is everything
I appreciate your desire to feel the song sonically because that's how you work. You are not the first one. Some reactors listen to the whole entire song and feel it sonically and then quickly read through the lyrics afterwards and get the feel of both together. Just a thought.
I know Maynard said this song was about being a veteran but I feel like there is an underlying relevance to the state of the band. “Warrior, struggling, to remain, relevant” They’ve been leading the prog/rock charge for so many decades. Really reading into these lyrics make me feel like they parallel the bands progression. “Cry aloud, bold and proud, o’where I’ve been, but here I am”
I’m writing this as you’ve stopped to disclaim about not pay mind to lyrics much. Maynard is an instrument. Equal to the other three. How they’ve always been as a unit. No worries! But…he does write some killer words should you enjoy them away from listening.
I'm joining you for the first time on invisible and I have to tell you I totally get your reaction at the end ! They can take us on rides that are hard to get off of !
My absolute favorite reaction to TOOL'S music so far. You were spot on with your thoughts on this song. For as simple as TOOL can make a song sound, the more you listen, the more you realize how complex it is, and by the time you realize how complex it is the band shows you that they were only getting started. No doubt about it, in my lifetime, and to me, TOOL is the greatest band ever. Thanks for sharing your reaction.

This song has a very deep personal meaning and association for me that has little to do with the common interpretation of the lyrics. I can rarely listen to it without crying. I love the bass by Justin..Eddie Van Halen went to a Tool show with Wolfgang, his son.Eddie asked his son, who is this bassist?? Eddie was the best!!
Also, the guitarist Adam Jones mentioned he does approach his songwriting as it were a film....so yeah man you're right on it!!
From an old warrior, this song is everything😌🙏
Perhaps the best, most technically insightful, and precise reaction videos to this song on the internet!!
Great vid! The solo in the middle is a bass solo (:
You are so accurate in how Tool uses so many effects but they all share a common sound to tie it all together. Sets on song apart from another.
Tool has three covers they do. Stranglehold, Demon cleaner live and No quarter. All worth a listen
Your silence at the end speaks a thousand words!
Looking forward to the next ones :)
“It’s all feel, maybe that’s why.” 👌🏻
Your breakdown/reactions are a true pleasure! ✌️

Like I said, this reaction was amazing. And this is coming from someone who has seen just about every single Tool reaction on RUclips.
@@wd9038 thank you, dude. Appreciate that!
@@JWSoundworks2 Great video. You catch the 7/8 guitar quickly. A lot in the song are polymeter, guitar 7/8, drums+vocals 4/4
I will support you in the future, you have such energy with your Tool reactions, and love how you fish it all out amazing, love you.
This one and Descending gave me my first LSD flashback right at the Tool concert back in 2019.
Saw them perform this live in February, and I felt like my soul floated out of my body. There is no describing Tool accurately to one that has never experienced their music. Its a spiritual experience for me.
This song in Particular shows the beauty of Maynard's vocals
Very cinematic is what I think of. Great commentary!
"My face is sore and it's making me happy". One of the best TOOL reaction lines ever! They are just amazing and Invincible is my favorite song on the new album.
Adam Jones almost exclusively plays a drop D tuning.
I do enjoy your reaction and commentary on Tool. Please keep it up, many thanks.
It made me happy too! Thanks again for the reaction. Reliving this through you has been a wonderful journey.
The most meaningful reaction video to Tool that I've seen yet
I managed to get a copy of this album on vinyl today, I swear it had me in tears on several occasions. Literally beyond words ❤
I love love love your reactions to TOOL songs! They are my favorite and have seen them a few times and will be again this November 15th back in Boston Mass 😃
That intro is 🔥
Thank you! :)
1992...chilling at U of Delaware Main St....some dude slow-crawls by me and he has Prison Sex on the radio
I would say a bunch of other shit, but that drive-by.... that 'passing of Tool'....
I went on to see that band ('93-'13) over 52 times. Waterloo Village NJ was the first Lollapalooza bullshit that I saw them and knew they were gonna break out
When it rips so hard you can only giggle at the end!
Another great one….enjoying your take on these songs. Your speechless happiness at the end there was exactly how I felt after hearing this album when it came out. You have some gems coming up! Enjoy!
"My face is sore" LOL, nice summation of this song!
When that bass starts. The way that makes you feel. :)
“Warrior, struggling, to remain, relevant”
They’ve been leading the prog/rock charge for so many decades.
First solo = bass
Second solo is drum pads
Third is the guitar.
Appreciate your kind words, dude. Thank you.
@@JWSoundworks2 you got it, brother
Your perspective and point of view makes me listen to songs I know and love differently. I would absolutely LOVE to watch you review every single TOOL song. 🤞🏻🙏
Very kind of you! Thank you. 😊
I love how this song is just a slow ratcheting of tension for minute after minute, like cranking on a garage door spring, until it finally breaks loose at the end.
I've listened to TOOL since 1998 znd this is their best tune 👌 *imo
Hey man! You make brilliant, unique reactions. I enjoy them a lot. Would you consider giving an overall opinion after the song finishes? It feels like Im missing the final part of your reaction, your overall comments and thougths! Anyway, cheers mate keep it up
"Bearing down" at the same time you made the downward hand gesture. 😀 Great reaction. 👍 After Fear Inoculum, please react to some others you're not as familiar with. I don't care if you've heard them before, I just love Tool analysis from people that know more about music than me. 🙂
Love this song and your reaction to it so much that I watched all the way through twice... so far
Just came across your reaction. Wow, you are gifted sir. I really enjoyed watching the reaction from someone who obviously knows what he is speaking about even if I have no clue what you said!
