🔧 The hex hole modification trick of a Victorinox RangerGrip / is this bit holder stable enough?? 🔩
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 8 дек 2022
- In this video i show you how i open the hex hole on the front handle of a Victorinox RangerGrip. After the modification i make tests with every layer who helps to support the force of the hex shank under load. With this tests i can give you a feeling how much force the improviced bit driver of the RangerGrip 79 can absorbe. At the end i show you a simple trick how you can improve the stability of this bit driver system.

I love how in every video you explain safety issues that could occur when people try to imitate your modifications, teach how to correct them, and reveal the drawbacks of making such alterations. You really SHOULD be a spokesperson for Victorinox at this point.
Thank you very much for this wonderful compliment!
Felix, I did this hack to my Ranger back when you first demonstrated it. I felt like I knew what you were going to reveal as the "secret" at the end of the video, because I discovered that problem with the chamfer myself. I use auger bits and spade bits as well as all the various Torx, Allen, and screwdriver bits, and as a result, I've found that many of the bits that have the locking grove cut into their shaft don't get much support. That under-cut in the shaft will line up with one of the support layers and that layer won't grip the hex shaft and you lose strength. The best solution that I came up with was to modify a small bit holder by cutting the shaft off and leaving just enough of it to reach all the way down through to the saw spring layer. I made the end very flat as you recommended in this video and I got rid of the under-cut by cutting it off. It does require carrying one more piece of kit, but it also gives you maximum strength with any bit. BTW, have you ever used auger bits instead of the spade bits? I feel like they take less effort. Thanks for making my Friday better, once again! Ciao!
Your comment is super interesting... thanks a lot!!
was going to mention flattening a bit holder then you only flattening one bit rather than going through a set
Felix, I’m running out of adjectives to describe your creativity and ingenuity 😊
Haaa ha haaa this compliment is wonderful! 🤣🤣🤣
Time to start smooshing words together so you can make new words to describe with.
Genius.
I totally agree! Every time he amazes me and so many others, that is more than wonderful!
Thanks to you, my old damaged Victorinox is now renewed with a lot of modifications
I am happy to hear that!
Schön, dass du auch immer an die kleinen Dinge denkst, die einen echten Mehrwert darstellen. Besten Dank!
Danke für das schöne Lob!
this is the model knife i treated myself to on my holiday to Geneva when i visited the flagship store there. I was already going to do this modification but the other youtube videos were not great on how to do it. Now i feel super confident to do it. Thankyou so much Felix.
Thank you very much!
Another great mod! Gratz on 200k!!
Thank you so much my Friend. Watch this ruclips.net/video/VvSQt4cJ6s8/видео.html :-D
Sackmesser Scientist! Alle Achtung mein Freund! Danke wie immer für deine unerschöpfliche Kreativität! Viele Grüße Sepp
Danke lieber Sepp! Dein Kommentar freut mich wie immer speziell! Ich wünsche Dir ein schönes Weekend!
I’m glad you addressed the chamfered base on the bits. The last hole is the most important for strength.
Thank you Adam!
👍👍👍Best modification yet. Saving serious pack weight by not needing scotch eye auger.
You are right!
Hallo Felix, das habe ich nicht gewusst, dass das RangerGrip eine Bitaufnahme hat. Du hast die techn. Feinheiten sehr gut erklärt! LG Micha
Danke für das Lob! LG
I loved this modification! Its hidden gem! I always use a bit driver but only for the small tasks. Im going to be getting a ranger grip soon so i am ver happy to see this😊
Flatten the chamfer ... GREAT TRICK! I watched this video even though I have already made this mod to my Ranger Grip 57. Boy am I glad I did!! After making the mod, I noticed, like you show, that the bit does not go *through* the liner lock layer because of the tiny protrusion of the saw spring. I also noticed that the bit wiggles a little, but I thought it was at least going *into* the liner lock layer. Now I realize that, because of the chamfer, it does not. Wow!! I can't wait to flatten the chamfer and have a much more robust tool. Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!
Your comment makes me happy! Thank you Bob!
I had made the modification on my Rangergrip 57 based on your older video. Thanks again for even more info a details on that great option. Cheers! 👍
Thanks for watching!!
I find your explanations & solutions so incredibly satisfying 👍😆
Thank you Felix !
Hello Edward. Thank you very much!!
Dear Felix, how you inspire me to make better things! Every Friday I look forward to you, though it has to be evenings now since I was given clearance to join the helicopter emergency service, but a couple of SAKs always accompany me. You are so clever; artful, too. Thank you so much, as always, *Hugs* ~ Wendi 🌻🌻🌻
Thank you so much dear Wendi!
This video seals the Deal because I was hesitating to buy a ranger grip! Now I have all the more reason to get one! Thank you!
🤩 super! Thanks!
Dear Felix,
thank you again for surprising me with "hidden" tools in Swiss Army Knives. I like the modifications you show - especially on my favorites, the 111mm Victorinox in the last weeks. Have a good start into the weekend.
Greetings to Swizerland
René
Thank you very much dear Rene!!
Oh, Felix, thank you so much for this video. Now I can point this out to anyone planning to do that modification. 🙂
And, apparently I'm learning patience on my old days. During the whole video, I had the urge, to write a comment about the 4th layer not supporting the tool, because of the chamfer. Luckily, I watched 'till the end first. 😀
Thank you very much for your patience 😂😂😂
Great video Felix, very precise and complete, as always.
Thanks a lot Giuseppe!
Hello Felix. I have the Ranger with the Phillips screwdriver. This is a great mod to a very handy multi-tool. I really appreciate your attention to details. Thank you. Love this series. All the best.
Thank you so much for your compliment!
That is so excellent! That definitely makes a lot more options available in the backcountry. Thanks so much for giving a complete understanding of how this works and how to modify it so it works better. Have a great one, my friend!
Thanks you very much my friend! Your comment means always something special to me!
Hi Season's greetings Felix 😊, this is a great tip, I never knew the hex hole was already in the liners, and the shape in the inside of the handle made it easy to cut out. Thanks for another interesting video my friend, stay safe, best wishe's to you and your's, Stuart UK.
Thank you very much dear Stuart!
I did not know about this! Now..the only Ranger I have is the one you sent me...so I won't attempt it just now....but definitely a good mod! Not just for bushcrafting purposes but(in my case) for taking apart knives and multitools. I carry small bits with me but always used a pair of small pliers. I feel that this would definitely make more sense!
Great stuff my friend!
Thank you so much my RUclips buddy from the very beginning
Thank you for all the detail, demo, and testing. You make innovation easy. 🌿
Thank you very much!
Thanks for this video
Just did it on my Ranger Grip 78 and it works like a charm
Super!
This is a good one, Felix. Well done. Thank you.
Thanks a lot for this positive feedback!
Ha, das wusste ich noch nicht! Danke fürs zeigen 😁👍
Really clever…. As always, thanks for the explanations and the instructions, Felix!
Hello Bill. Thanks a lot for watching. Greetings from Switzerland!
@@FelixImmler Merry Christmas, Felix! and best wishes for 2023!
Excellent video very descriptive. Very helpful. Good job.
I now have to buy this knife just to do this project ! 👍
Thanks a lot for your comment!
I saw another video creator do this mod. I love the idea but I knew you would have some more info. Thanks. Now I have confidence to blow up my warranty. Boom 💥. Boring holes is more important to me than any screw driver capabilities but still , a guy could need to use a screwdriver in the woods.
Thanks a lot for your interesting comment!
Amazing the time you spent with your videos. Congratulations
Thank you John!
Sooper cool! Thenks man!
Hello Vladimir. Thanks a lot for watching!
Nicely done. Thank you.
Happy Holidays to you and yours!
Thank you so much dear Jerry!
Thank You Mr. Immler for your very novel ideas. Happy Holiday Season.
Thank you Cosmo!
I have a small set of 8 wood drill bits (up to 1/4 inch) designed for fast interchange with a hex bit driver in an electric drill. This modification and these drill bits which weigh very little would be a great addition to any kit for bushcrafting when you want to put holes in wooden handles, etc., for cordage or when you want to use dowels to hold wooden components together. Great video, Felix, I'm always amazed at you ideas!
Thanks a lot for your interessting comment!
Great video Felix.
Great use of a hidden feature. Nice work Felix.
Thanks a lot James!
Greetings Mr. Immler.
I posted a video on this three months ago with a very easy way to open the hexagonal hole.
It really takes only about 15 - 20 seconds and comes out very clean without any drilling or any filing.
I made another video - basically a sequel - comparing the depths that each of three RangerGrips allow a bit to set in the handle of the knife.
The Boatsman comes with the bit driver exposed. The RangerGrip 71 Gardner has the same amount of metal supporting the bit when the hole on the scale is opened.
The RangerGrip 79 does not allow the bit to set as deep and has less metal supporting it.
Basically, they all will work with a variety of bits as long as we don't over-torque them.
I like to use mine with regular drill bits when the reamer is not adequate to get the exact size hole that I want. I only do light drill applications and don't really recommend any heavy-duty type work.
Cheers.

Hi Felix, very interesting, i was totally absorbed in that, good stuff. Cheers Will.😊😎
Thank you so much!!
Comme toujours EXCELLENT !!!
Merci bien!
Great video thanks. One more reason I am glad I have the Boatsman as I have less to worry about.
shake your hand! 🤝🤝🤝 Thanks for the great ideas and implementation!👏👏👏
Thank you very much!
Excellent, thanks for that good explanation
Thank you very much!!
Calculating the torque value of the combined thicknesses of the liners is intelligent. Removing the chamfer is also a smart idea. There are small sockets which use a 1/4 inch driver and I imagine that the 1/4 inch shank from a drill could be used as a socket driver . Bicycle tool etc. ??
Thanks once again for another intriguing engineering tutorial and all the best sent your way Felix.
Your comment makes me happy! Thank you so much!
@Quantum Mechanic - Great idea mate!!

Hi Felix, amazing and informative video as always!
Have you thought about going through your collection of stock and modified SAKs? It might be interesting for a lot of people to see the collection you have and which ones you have modified and showcased here on RUclips over the years.

Obrigado você amigo sempre acompanho seus vídeos gosto muito dos Victor inox e suas história de fabricação!
Sehr interessant. Danke.

Man I well want to do this to my Ranger grip. I bought the hex wood drill bit for it but I got scared in the end to pull my Ranger apart and do it lol 😂. Got to get the guts to do it but I know I’ll mess it up I put money on it. I’ll send it to you Felix ok lol 😂. Great video mate. You and family stay safe.
Wie immer top👍👍👍🍀Danke Dir😉

Vielen dank für deine tipp!
Sehr gerne!
Good video Felix , thanks for sharing , God bless !
Thank you so much dear Michael!
Wow, that's awesome 😃
Thank you!
Right at the point ! Very important to know, where the weak points are and eliminate them as much as possible. I'd go even a step further: all long tools like bit-holders, drills etc come with a groove near the end. It's ment as a breaking point when used with a power drill. When used with a hand tool, it's useless, so I'd cut it off (reduces lenght and weight too). With a very crisp 90° edge it may get fiddly to insert it, so I'd do a very small chamfer, but to get the full advantage of the 1,2mm layer, I'd open the saw, so the next layer (#5) will be the stop.
Stay safe and enjoy Xmas time
Your comment is super interesting... thanks a lot!!
Muy bueno su trabajo, felicitaciones. Saludos 🇦🇷
Gracias mi amigo
Felix you are a wiz very use full informative video as usual I think I’ve said this before my EDC is a Swiss Army knife a powerful small but effective tool. Thanks Ciaooooo 👌
Hello Tony. Thank you so much for this wonderful compliment!!
Nice.
Thank you.
Thank you!!
And... 7 months after this video was published, the Victorinox Venture was released. It's interesting to see the correlation between these videos and the design of the venture. I appreciate the influence you have on Victorinox!
I like the Ranger Grip knives, but I think they have two flaws. First, the only blade can't (and isn't) be sharpened closer to the pivot due to how the blade stop is designed. And second, there is no small blade similar to what the 91mm versions have. Because of this, I have to put more force into my cuts because the cutting edge is farther away from the handle. This modification makes this tool more useful, but the blade is annoying.
Thank Felix for another great video!
Hi Felix, love your videos. The thumbnail reminded me of a mod/ adaptation I made. The hex bit holder from lidl reminded me of it. If you ever see the mixed washer sets in lidl the smallest split locking washer makes a great replacement ring for any swiss army knife. I have damaged a few standard split rings over the last few years. The smallest locking washer in the lidl set has a nice spring tension without being brittle. You can open it with 2 pliers to fit it to the knife and then the cut in it is ideal for creating a near seamless joint when you correct/ straighten the washer after fitting. It has enough spring to reset itself after being shock loaded without the joint opening and releasing the knife. Also the thickness of the wire (square profile) in the washer washer is a very good match to the hole in the frame piece.
Meant to add that the split ring on the ranger grip in your thumbnail was damaged which also reminded me of the fix as well as the hex bit holder.
Sorry... i didn't understand your modification. But it sounds very interesting...

Passt sofort ohne Nacharbeit.
Liebe Grüße
Thomas

Hello Mr. Immler,
I finally subscribed to you after watching many of your videos. Thank you for all the tips and tricks.
I have an idea for creating the ultimate 130mm tool by combining:
Pliers, Marlin Spike, and one-handed Serrated Blade from a V. Boatsman
Scissors and Wood Saw of a V. Gardener
Scales with tweezer and toothpick (with hex mod), Gutting Blade, and one handed Plain Blade from a V. Hunter 58
Metal File from a Wenger Ranger 70.
Locking Screwdriver and Bottle Opener from any Rangergrip
Back Tools: corkscrew, reamer or awl, and Phillips screwdriver
I have all of these knives already, and I keep looking at them, trying to figure out if such a combination for this monster is possible.
Thanks a lot for your inspiration!!! This tool sounds interesting
Ahh, ive seen this before somewhere. I wondered when you would cover it
Thank you my friend 😆
Hi Felix first of all I want to let you know I love your videos I’m always very entertained and I have learned so much from you. My wife even enjoys watching too.
My question is which do you prefer. Rangergrip or forester/ Trekker
Mr Felix, thanks for the brilliant demonstration of finding the secret hole and the explanation of why 3 layers of the ranger grip 55, 79, onyx and wood, I found that you can use the Leatherman Raquet and bit extender are better to use and because you have to points of the hex hole you can have 3 layers complete and you can have only a small hole and a stablel bit tool, do you know if the wood scales also have the precut hole, thanks I enjoy your videos, thanks
Hi Félix, and a torque test with a toque wrench? 😉
Great video!

Yep Yep ! 😄👍
Thanks a lot dear Dennis!!!
Dear Felix and everybody else, there is a really easy way to do the mod. You can do this mod just using one tool. With the Reamer you can easily drill a hole in the middle of the hex inlay and carve out along the edges, regularly trimming the rubber on the front with the small blade of a SAK. mine took less than 5 minutes
Hi Felix, interesting idea. Is there a better option to use for the hex hole?
I'd be afraid of damaging this knife.
I like that you challenge the tool.
Take care Felix
The safe option is to not use the hex hole Hi Felix, interesting idea. Is there a better option to use for the hex hole?
😆😆😆
👌👍
