carly is lamenting about being naively young when she fell for a suave, self-absorbed, vain man of considerable means/wealth - race horse owner at saratoga springs, takes private jet to nova scotia, is always where he's "supposed to be"/where the scene is.
bj, the kicker that asia is talking about is if he's not there then he's with the wife of a close friend 😏

The Classic opening bass riff is played by Klaus Voormann. Carly credits Klaus for setting the table for the songs vibe. Klaus is most famous for designing the album cover for the Beatles 1966 masterpiece "Revolver'. Which Klaus won a Grammy Award. Klaus ran in the Beatles inner circle starting back in October of 1960. Two years before Ringo joined and 3 years before Beatlemania exploded in the United Kingdom. Klaus has recorded on many solo Beatles songs and remains their life long friend. RNB

Back in 2010, MSM reported that Carly Simon had revealed the name of the person the song is about. On her album "Never Been Gone," Simon whispers a name during an instrumental break. The name is "David." Who could this be? Suspects include; David Geffen who founded Asylum records in 1971. Simon was with Elektra which merged with Asylum in 1972 and Geffen was put in charge. You're So Vain was released in 1972. Other David's of the era and in Simon's orbit are David Crosby of Crosby, Stills and Nash, and David Cassidy of The Partridge Family fame. Warren Beatty's mother was from Nova Scotia but no-one has been able to confirm if he flew his LearJet there to view a total eclipse of the sun. Also, another clue is found in a racehorse winning. My preference is toward David Geffen, as he's within her immediate circle. In the 70's everyone believed Mick Jagger or Warren Beatty, but Jagger's voice could be clearly heard on backing vocals (Jagger was a prolific backing singer, he is very generous with his time) and so is unlikely. Beatty was world famous for his vanity alone and so he held the highest rank of likely suspects.

I saw Carly on t.v. she was telling how Anticipation came on the radio while she was in a cab. She told the taxi driver that was her on the radio and he thought she was crazy and kicked her out of the car! She was good-natured about it and laughed.…Brilliant

My favorite Carly Simon "That's the way I always heard it should be"
Another rumor is that this is about Ted Turner.

This is perhaps the most ironic song in history - Sorry, Alanis Morissette - because "You probably think this song is about you" … well, it kind of IS about the 3 people she was singing about. It isn't solely about any one of the three, but each verse is about a different one and then the chorus after goes with the verse. It's why this is one of my favorite songs-the sheer irony of it all.

Bass intro was by Klaus Vormann, a then well-known German bass player and session musician. and in the very background is the voice of Mick Jagger.

You probably have heard it or parts of it. The song has been covered more than 20 times and sampled more than 10 times. It is not about 1 person. Each verse is about a different guy. Supposedly the 2nd verse is about Warren Beatty.

In the mid to late '90s there was a band named Marilyn Manson fronted by a guy who went by that name. Their most notorious record was produced by this guy named Trent Reznor, who was the front/main man for this band called Nine Inch Nails. After Reznor produced Manson, he released a song called "Starf•••rs, Inc.". The song included the line _"All our pain, how did you think we'd get by without you? You're so vain I bet you think this song is about you. Don't you? Don't you?"_ By that time he and Manson (the singer) had fallen out, and the public just _knew_ the song was about Manson. The funny thing is that a couple of years later Manson ended up doing some guest spots for NIN and wouldn't you know it, he made his entrance during "Starf•••rs, Inc.". I don't think those guys stayed friends, but it was funny to see.

Had a discussion with family about this song a couple months ago. We looked it up on Wikipedia, and Carly Simon said that the 2nd verse is about Warren Beatty, the actor, who naturally thought the entire song was about him. She hasn't said who the other verses are about, yet, though.

The summer Carly turned 17, she shacked up with Harvard boy in a beach house on the French Riviera, and the first verse of this song is about him. He went on to be a minor novelist and college professor. I worked with him on a project and when I asked him about the song he said the apricot scarf was his. Decent chap in my book.

A big hit and a favorite when I was a young kid - and Mick Jagger on vocals with her. Check out 'You Belong to Me,' 'Nobody Does It Better (The Spy Who Loved Me) (a Bond Theme) and 'That's the Way I've Always Heard It Should Be.'

edit to add... I just looked it up on AMG and she did write 2 of the songs on the album.
