I never cared exactly who she wrote it about. What made the song a HIT was the fact that all of us could apply it to whoever WE wanted it to be about. It’s My Opinion that the majority of artists suffer from some form of vanity. It makes them keep on plodding along when the so called experts try their best to tear them down!!! ❤❤❤ The fact that she kept adding names to the list of who was it about speaks volumes about the validity of gossip. She used it to her advantage. Way to go Carly. Write a book,,, have it released upon your death,,, add the tag that this persons identity is FINALLY released within it and BOOM,,, Leave your family even richer than they already are.

Carly Simon never revealed keeping it a mystery who You're So Vain was about until recently, since 1972.
I love all her songs. We thought the song was about Mick Jagger, but it was about Warren Beatty. The Anticipation has been makin me late keepin me waitin all these years. She's So Beautiful and has a beautiful voice.
Only the 2nd verse is about Warren Beatty.
She admitted at one point the song was about every man she had ever been with.
Beatty was iconic. He was so bad that by error on his part, he even TRIED to pick up on me.
There is no need to brag. He tried to pick up on EVERYONE. Even me.
I was born local to all of all that garbage. I was physically there.
He became engaged the week before to my favorite actress, Diane Keaton.
I waved, indicating my ring finger, then my middle finger.
I am a Keaton fan. I could not REPLACE Diane. That would be ridiculous.
It just so happened to be in a certain place where he was.
Nothing more.

The thing that's always struck me about this song
Is interpretation That she's accusing someone of being vain for assuming the song is about them
But what else is the song about?
It's about them

I think entitling a song as "You're So Vain" with the lyric following that being - "you 'probly' think this song is about you" - when in fact, it IS about that person, is more contradictory than any song I know of. And it blows my mind that I'm the only one who ever noticed this - in MY world. I'm sure I'm not the only one who ever noticed this EVER. I would even guess that Ms. Simon saw this contradiction (or question) when she was writing it and simply thought it to be good writing because it's "artistically ambiguous." No, it's a contradiction.

This video is an excelent example of how to drag on and get youtube playtime by repeating and never actually getting to the point.
After watching 70% of the video I gave up and searched for the answer else ware, a perfect example of modern media with nothing of value to contribute.
He walked in to the party ....... like he was walking onto a yacht ...... she was a babe when her first album came out .... her music is mostly pop stuff and NOT IN THE LEAGUE OF HER HUSBAND TAYLOR ..... a gifted composer, singer and musician .....
