Carly Simon reveals inspiration in song "You're So Vain" ...sort of (19 Nov 15)

  • You're so vain, Warren Beatty, you probably think this story's about you.
And you would be partially correct. (Read more below)
In anticipation of her upcoming memoir, "Boys in the Trees," singer Carly Simon talked to People about her iconic 1972 song "You're So Vain" and the fact that part of it is about actor Beatty, a former love of Simon's.
"I have confirmed that the second verse is Warren," Simon said.
The second verse includes the lines:
"You had me several years ago when I was still quite naive
Well you said that we made such a pretty pair
And that you would never leave
But you gave away the things you loved and one of them was me
I had some dreams, they were clouds in my coffee
    Clouds in my coffee"
The 70-year-old singer has previously said that the song isn't about Beatty and then said it's a little about him. She and Beatty dated briefly in the early 1970s, and she told People that "Warren thinks the whole thing is about him!"
For more than four decades, fans have wondered about the inspiration for the tune, and she's even given clues before. Simon said some of the other verses refer to two other men whom she declined to name.

Well there a line in there about going to Saratoga and the race track well it was a well known fact that David Cassidy liked to go there so it could be about him. I think she wrote that song about many men she dated over the years as her trib to them. It makes the song much more interesting to speculate who she is singing about when she keeps quiet about that and keeps her fans guessing.

now we know and the second verse is the most personal and hurtful. I heard that she said that the very first line she heard someone say it and she put it in a song. But the third verse, Warren Beatty's mother lives in Nova Scotia. And he did go to the eclipse there in in 1972. And he at one time own horses. I wouldn't be surprised if he did think this song was about him.

I guess it would've been more interesting if she just said the song is about Beatty.
But then she doesn't want him to get a big head about it.
I think secretly any concert goer of Carly's just wants to hear this one song bc it's so closely identified with her and her BIG SECRET !

    [Lyrics: You're So Vain]
You walked into the party like you were walking onto a yacht
Your hat strategically dipped below one eye
    Your scarf it was apricot
You had one eye in the mirror as you watched yourself gavotte
And all the girls dreamed that they'd be your partner
    They'd be your partner, and...
You're so vain, you probably think this song is about you
You're so vain, I'll bet you think this song is about you
    Don't you? don't you?
You had me several years ago when I was still quite naive
Well you said that we made such a pretty pair
And that you would never leave
But you gave away the things you loved and one of them was me
I had some dreams, they were clouds in my coffee
    Clouds in my coffee, and...
You're so vain, you probably think this song is about you
You're so vain, I'll bet you think this song is about you
    Don't you? don't you? don't you?
I had some dreams they were clouds in my coffee
    Clouds in my coffee, and...
You're so vain, you probably think this song is about you
You're so vain, I'll bet you think this song is about you
    Don't you? don't you?
Well I hear you went up to Saratoga and your horse naturally won
Then you flew your Lear Jet up to Nova Scotia
To see the total eclipse of the sun
Well you're where you should be all the time
And when you're not you're with
Some underworld spy or the wife of a close friend
Wife of a close friend, and...
You're so vain, you probably think this song is about you
You're so vain, I'll bet you think this song is about you

I was in a pop band for a long time. Somehow, I knew this fact 40 YEARS AGO. Until I happened across this news article, I thought it was common knowledge! Silly me. I haven't thought of this for, ...40 years.
Alas, I was never too concerned with such stuff, and learned a long time ago to NEVER explain my song lyrics to the audience! This always backfires. I learned to allow the audience to take what they will from a song. To explain a song only limits audience perception. Usually, the audience finds things about my lyric that are far more poignant and universally relevant than I knew when I wrote the lyric! I.e., if I keep my big mouth shut, I will have wrote a far better lyric than I previously thought!
E.g., My favourite Dylan song was once, "Ballad Of A Thin Man" ,... until some jerk (who was, unfortunately, reliable) told me that it was about an oblivious, stoned/drunk, BRIAN JONES at a party that I had attended. This thoroughly ruined the song for me. I instantly knew that it was true. This knowledge severely limited the range I had applied to the song, -and, thus, my appreciation for the lyric. I rarely listened to the tune again. The former enjoyment was gone.
As a songwriter who greatly appreciates a good lyric this has always made me cross. I suppose "Highway 61" is now my favourite Dylan lyric. -Just like everyone else.
During this party, Brian was soused, stumbling, slurring his speech, -not full control of himself. I think this was after being sacked from his own band (Brian started The Rolling Stones and was supposedly the leader). He was being laughed at, -which I thought was cruel, vicious and catty. I found the people at this party to be shallow and the situation depressing. I did not stay long. Shallow people (non musicians) abound at the edges of the pop music world. Ugh.
As for Brian, Brian Jones was a consummate musician. He could play almost any unfamiliar instrument, and find the right part for the job; -all within 20 minutes. If you handed him a zither, he'd have it mastered and the part down in time to complete the session.
As for Ms. Simon's song, I have absolutely no recollection of who told me that it was about Mr. Beatty, but I have known this since the late 1970s, and have always accepted it as truth. I suspect it was at a party or something, but the source must have been unimpeachable as I never question it, and it fit the lyric so well. Still, I have NO recollection of the person who told me this tid-bit. Weird.
Of course, I knew it was NOT Mick! Mick is NOT the character in Sympathy For The Devil! Mick is one of my favourite writers and a nice guy. Stable, pleasant solicitous and responsible. -Not a bad harp player, as well. Mick can also imitate other singers so well, you cannot tell the difference. Joan Baez also has this talent.
Ms. Simon is a fine song writer and I always admired Richard Perry's productions.
PS: Ms. Simon can be heard to whisper, "Son of a gun" during the intro. I suspect that this reflects her satisfaction at Klaus Voormann's fender bass playing.

Apparently a few of those "peacocks" were able to catch her fancy for at least a brief while, those lucky bastards! Lol. I don't get the kinda' current intrigue about Warren Beatty being at the center of this song's inspiration for her, although I think it's apparent from the diversity of the verses that the song is about more than one former male suitor. It was widely accepted that the song was about Warren Beatty some 40 years ago because Carly and Beatty dated not that long ago prior to the song's release and Beatty was a huge star known for his womanizing and confidence/arrogance at the time. I remember it being discussed on the radio in the very early 80's, so there's no real surprise. Even after all of these years, with the invention of the internet, it's relatively easy to retrace Carly's early love life and make some very good educated guesses about all of her inspirations for the song.

She has said that Mick Jagger isn't in the song - in fact they are friends. She has also dismissed that James Taylor is there, although he unfortunately flew to Nova Scotia, but the plane wasn't a Lear jet.

you people are so under educated this song is a classic everyone who grew up in the 70's knew who this song was about. People have no idea what it was like we were hippies and you subscribed to peace, love, sexual revolution, womens rights, green peace. And then after that the next generations took it down hill what is left, hate, guns, racism, sexism, and the idea that a gun is more important then your next door neighbor

As a teen at the start of the 80's I have an idea because of my older siblings. They are older sisters all of whom are 10 years and older. Old enough to remember Helen Reddy's "I Am Woman," Billie Jean King, Gloria Steinhem and others importance in the Woman's Rights movement, Greenpeace as it was the precursor to today's conservation importance. Water, Wind, Solar and Geothermal energies were supposed to be the future, but politicians and lobbyists killed those in the US, just like they did with the Metric System. All of these ideals were crushed by my generation-the 80's Me decade. Music and 3 Channel television variety/music shows were the soundtrack and videos of my life before Cable television, MTV and now the internet. Carly Simon and James Taylor have always been special to me. They were responsible for my introduction to saxophonist David Sanborn as began to learn the horn. He played on their records and toured with them as well. Carly Simon has always been a favourite and I agree with many of your sentiments.

Knowing Nicholson's penchant for grand entrances, twirling around, wearing fedora-like hats and looking for the closest mirror I'm leaning towards him
Then again, did she have any relationship with Robert Redford?
