Collecting Boutique Blu-rays as a TEENAGER

- Greetings! This was a video topic I had really wanted to make for over a year. Boutique Blu-ray collectors who are part of Gen Z are pretty rare so I always feel like I'm the black sheep in all those Facebook groups.
Yes, I am aware that in one shot there is a bunch of Arrow sets still sealed. I forgot to make note that those were collectively bought during a sale last summer (which is also when the video was taken) and they have since been opened and watched up until now. Please don't be angry with me lol I'm not a big time hoarder!
If you have any questions make sure to leave a comment!
This is uncanny because I am 20 and also started out as a Godzilla fan. Our stories are pretty similar. I also watched cinemassacre. Pretty cool. I mostly collect Criterion now.
My movie collecting started in the mid 2000s when all the movie rental stores were going out of business and selling their inventory for next to nothing. I'm still primarily a used movie collector probably 80 percent of my 1200 plus dvd collection came from pawn shops, resell shops ,half price books and eBay. My favorite genres are westerns, film noir and classic samurai films.
As a 31 year old movie collector I have to say this was a really well put together video essay! We’ve all had similar trajectories in collecting but this was interesting to see what it’s like as someone from a different generation than mine. Keep up the great work man, would love to see more collecting discussion videos!
Thank you so much! I just upgraded my gear over the course of the year so hopefully I can pump out some stuff within the week.
@@OfficialCinematicTrash Awesome! I’ll be on the lookout!
Im 16 rn and got collecting steelbooks and 4ks a few months ago and now breaking into boutique stuff
Welcome aboard!
really enjoy ur video / channel - enjoy seeing a young persons passion- deffinatly go deep into horror - obscure horror - reccomend stuff around 2014, 90's and 80's all gold :)
Heh, I'm 15 and have a custom shelf for this stuff.
I'm Gen-X, the bulk of my collection was mostly DVDs I purchased new, mostly in places like Walmart over the course of about 20 years or so, started really ramping up around last August . My immediate focus has been mostly "collecting my childhood through early adulthood".
This is a great video, Pierce! I loved hearing your back story and how you got into collecting through the Mill Creek and TCM DVDs. I'm looking forward to more from you!
I totally did not expect you to see this video lol. Thank you very much for commenting! I've been watching your videos for about a year, and I love the great insight you provide. I'll definitely be making more intuitive videos about the topic. Thanks again!
The only Criterion Blu Rays i have are from Wes Anderson which are
Rushmore
The Royal Tenenbaums
The Life aquatic with steve Zissou
Fantastic mr fox
Moonrise kingdom
The grand Budapest hotel
I am still on the hunt for The darjeeling Limited & Bottle Rocket in the criterion collection at a reasonable price
I have multi region 4K player as well because the criterions I do have are region A or Region B and I live here in Australia
I'm 15 and i collect arrow vinegar syndrome etc 😂
"Criterion is the comfort food of boutique blu ray collecting." On point, well spoken and good editing. New subscriber here!
I bought that Horror classics last year mainly for a couple of titles but there were a few more on there i really enjoyed
You earned this SUB …. Very good video very similar to how I started collecting Godzilla vhs tapes …. Look forward to more of you’re content
Thank you very much! I still have an abundance of Godzilla tapes, some of them are pretty valuable.
Really enjoyed the video! Thank you for sharing your story! I too started collecting at a young age of around 14. And now im 27 and I haven’t stopped! I focus mostly on criterion but I try to get a little of everything! Collecting is truly such a fun journey! I just subscribed and I look forward to checking out more of your videos!
Welcome to the channel Kyle! I've actually been watching some of your videos the past few months myself. You have an excellent set up!
@@OfficialCinematicTrash Thank you!
I been my cinematic trash 😩
I give you credit for getting into all this so young, I'm nearly 20 years older than you and grew up when there were still tons of video stores, I didn't have access to the internet till I was a teenager and even then it was still dial-up and you certainly couldn't stream any movies yet, and DVD wasn't even a thing yet, again, till I was a teenager. I started DVD collecting in the early 2000s then got out of it after a few years and sold off most of my collection, but got back into it around 2010 when I got my first HDTV and blu ray (Avatar!). I was buying those MIll Creek 50 movie packs back in like 2006! So that was really cool to hear you were discovering the same stuff, as there were some gems in those sets. I've always had to be on a budget so building my collection has taken me a long time but my blu ray/4k (and some DVDs of stuff that hasn't been released since DVD) collection is now over 1000. I haven't posted a collection update on my channel since 2015 but since I broke 1000 I plan to this year. I've subscribed to you and since your blind buying so much and so much boutique stuff is so expensive, I do recommend that you at least check trailers of movies on RUclips, if not watch the first 10 minutes (if not the whole movie) on free places like here on RUclips and also Tubi, plus searching around on the net you can find ways to preview/sample a lot of this stuff. I've seen a lot in my time but there's still tons I haven't seen and I really don't blind buy much when we're often having to pay 20-30+ for new 4ks and blus. And make sure your learning all the yearly sales these companies have, there's a great thread in the blu ray dot com's movie deals forum called something like "boutique sales megathread" that helps people keep aware of sales. Kino has great sales 4 times a year, Criterion through Barnes&Noble in July and Nov, and ones like Vinegar Syndrome only do 2 big sales a year, Memorial Day Weekend (next weekend!) and Black Friday weekend.
Awesome channel!!
Are you gonna start posting again or what I need more content it’s been 5 months
I have a documentary in post-production as we speak. Should be out sometime this month. Regular videos shall return upon completion! Thank you for your patience lol
@@OfficialCinematicTrash it’s been a year since you posted I miss the content
Trying to get Titanic on VHS in the wild is going to be a difficult task
I have about 3 copies of it on VHS. I know there are people out there trying to break the record of "owning the most copies of Titanic on VHS", but Titanic was such a big movie, not only in the theater but on home video as well. They've printed so many copies of it. No matter how many people try their hand at buying up copies of the Titanic movie, I don't think it ever will get to be as scarce as say a B horror movie that only exists on VHS.
This is a well put together video Pierce. My movie collecting started with Godzilla. Going to FYE anytime I had money every few months...just HOPING I'd find a disc I didn't own.
I know how it is. I’m 21 and I’ve been collecting for a bit. When I was younger I bought a bunch of DVDs and didn’t really watch most of them. I lost most of them and I decided to start rebuilding my collection about 2 years ago. Most of my collection consists of Vinegar Syndrome, Severin and Arrow.
Bring back the bootleg dvd video. please?
One day.... ;) I'll revisit the topic at some point
@@OfficialCinematicTrash okay
Normally I don't think it is wise to buy so many movies. But since you are targeting rare/vintage/classic/cult movies as more of a collector, then I guess this is pretty cool. Just don't go into debt doing it. Credit cards are the devil!
Went through the same thing with VHS and DVD. Good to hear a new generation still is into physical media. Keep that passion alive.
That was a great video!! It definitely answered the questions I've always had 😂
I thought I was the only one! All of those channels listed I’m either aware of or subbed 😂! This year as a collector I’ve been trying to focus more boutique movies there releases are always so awesome especially criterion and shout factory. Being 16 and a Blu-ray collector most of my friends and family think it’s ridiculous.
Ha! I remember some time ago asking my parents for a box set from Arrow Video for Christmas. Didn't get it as they did found it odd that I still kept wanting movies. Getting a job is probably the best thing you could do as a teenager wanting to collect, and starting young is probably the best time to do it as well.
A damn shame that it’s been 8 months without a new video talking about boutique labels is always fun but experiences are amazing in itself rip blockbuster! Hope to see you back soon maybe a collection video??????
Life happens man, but I am happy to report that I've since upgraded all my gear: mic, computer, editor, new apartment, etc. Its a long story, but I had some help and some encouragement. I have a surprise coming for you all very soon :)
A fantastic conversation good sir. Love hearing a youth like yourself sincerely appreciate cinema.
A subscribe button smash just happened for me! See you again!
I appreciate cinema as much as I appreciate your comment! Thank you very much and welcome aboard, my friend!
A professionally made video about a passion of yours! R u married?!?!?!?
Glad to accompany you while you wipe :)
Love it!
Great video pierce, keep it up 😛
Thanks buddy!
I forgot to subscribe yesterday when I first watched this. Godzilla Marriage Story. Make it happen!
Well good sir, welcome to the channel!
@@OfficialCinematicTrash Hopefully that thread is blowing up your audience. Are you doing short films and mixing in the home video stuff or is it just home video stuff going forward?
@@AVCentral It's a mixture of those things plus more. I don't do vlogs that often, but the last time I did one, I had a lot of fun with it. I will keep making short films but they will be few and far between since they require a lot of work. Home video stuff, actual movie reviews, and video essays will likely take up most of the pie since they are simpler to make and fun for me. Although the channel isn't designed for it, I am a musician on the side, so perhaps one day I can do a few music discussions or post one of my covers. You never know.
@@OfficialCinematicTrash Here's the thing I will posit to you. Is it possible to do a video essay without sounding pretentious? I don't think it's possible anymore.
@@AVCentral I mean, thats really up to viewer. If they perceive it to be that way, then it is on them. If and when I do a video essay I won't necessarily be blowing smoke up my own ass. It would just be either praise or critique of whatever the subject is, and hopefully I can still keep it entertaining.
