- Here's a rare treat. The amazing cornet player Shaye Cohn proves to be equally amazing playing piano with Tuba Skinny on Royal Street in New Orleans. This is the Dallas Rag. So this lady puts down the trumpet and stands in front of the piano and kills it like there is no tomorrow... this is some crazy talent

She is originally a classically trained pianist, who got fed up of playing classical music and turned to jazz. She still has all the skills of a trained classical pianist.

In case no one else noticed Shaye is the DIRECTOR of this Band . She does it so casually that if you are not watching closely you might miss her cueing others at when to come in and setting the tempo. This is SOOOOOO much talent packed into one beautiful woman its amazing . I played cornet about 40 years ago and the degree of difficulty here is OUTSTANDING and she makes it look like its SSSSOOOOO easy . When I first heard her play I cried . I had tears rolling down my cheeks .I had such an emotional reaction to your playing I actually cried . I didn`t cry at my Fathers funeral . I thought I needed to tell you that . Thank You for Everything you do .

Yep. This band is the business. We played a Sonny and Brownie song at my father's funeral. I think you add a little jazzz to their stuff then you are in heaven. 😎

At the age of 10 I started playing wind instruments, started on the viola and in 5 years I reached the part of 1 trumpet. I should note that I did not notice any very outstanding complexity, for a professional - this is a regular game. She doesn't take notes cleanly. If you want to listen to how to play, then listen to the Leningrad dixieland, these are professionals.

Forty years ago, the son of a jazz musician left New Orleans and led many major aspects of the institutionalization of jazz. Now we have a granddaughter of a jazz musician, who moved to NO and found a way to play our music in the manner in which it was conceived. What a difference that makes!
Certainly is a rare treat: decent crowd, a few good dancers, band well-synchronized. Who doesn't love it?

Shaye's response is typical for her. We've seen her have surprises and reversals in other videos. She always laughs and soldiers on. She's no prima donna.

I've watched dozens of their vids that span several years and are amazed that the crew has been fundamentally the same with few exceptions. I fully suspect that that is Saye's doing. She is one amazing Gal!

Tuba skinny, some of the best trad I've heard in over 50 years of listening. We all rave about the girls, but this is a great set of musicians of both sexes. They listen to each other, they watch the bandleader and they self mix! Come to Spain guys!

Very recently discovered the existence of Tuba Skinny on YT. I always felt bad for the tuba player having to lug that instrument around the hot and humid streets of NOLA. But, now to learn that Shaye is hefting a piano for gigs. . . .

Perfectly described, I absolutely love 1920s music, makes me miss being in band. Haven't picked up my trumpet in alomst 2 years
@SgtAwesome97: I never played in a band, but I've often wondered if a young kid was forced by a parent to play something like the trumpet or clarinet, hated it, then years later a light went off in his head saying "you know, that was actually fun playing in a band!" One instrument played by itself is pretty boring, but get 8 or 9 other like-minded musicians, and suddenly you sound like Tube Skinny. In your dreams!

Yep, but back then black people had their own entrances and shit. Now they just aren't anywhere to be seen and whites took their culture and music. You love it!!
This video and Shaye Cohn along with the rest of the band is just fabulous in more ways than I can count. There is just SO MUCH to love and appreciate throughout the entire video. I even got a kick out of the captive audience and the people dancing in the street.

The whole band is multi talented! Shaye on accordion, Barabus on violin, Todd on banjo etc etc etc. This group is VERY special and talented!! And they are also a lot of FUN!! Great Respect for each of these players!! And the singer, Erika Lewis...Perfect and a Wow!

It. It's like going way back to the 20's and the early 30's when the
best Dixieland music was heard,
played by let's say Jelly Roll Morton and His Red Hot Peppers,
Joe "King" Oliver and His Creole Band, Johnny Dodds and His New
Orleans Wanderers, Original Dixieland Jazz Band, New Orleans
Rhythm Kings and of course such greats as Jack Teagarden, Miff Mole (both of
them played trombone), Louis Armstrong, Henry "Red" Allen (played trumpet),
Bix Beiderbecke, Buck Clayton the latter were also trumpeters and Clarence
Williams (pianist), Kid Ory (trombonist) etc. , etc.
Thank you so much you are doing a very fine job. With you we are having something like a Dixieland Revival.
