Thankfully, we are coming out of the pandemic. Between booster vaccines and better therapies death rates are dropping. The issue WAS a valid issue in that you don't want to encourage crowds of people to congregate.

Well yeah they joined the force so they could wear a gun and bully people who don't wear one, not protect or serve...going after murderers is scary, and "not what they signed up for"
Well that’s a clever move by the Mayor……destroy the very thing that visitors and tourists visit New Orleans for in the first place. Live Jazz! I bet the local traders, shop keepers, food vendors and small businesses appreciate her shortsightedness! Keep playing TS. Love from U.K.!
I never wanted to go to New Orleans until I discovered Tuba Skinny, and it is on the street where I would love to see them perform, preferably outside a pub.
I would suggest everyone inundate city hall with e-mails, letters, phone calls, etc. Never put dumbasses (the administration in this case?) in the seat of power. They don't follow their own rules and regulations. I hope people like Tuba Skinny and others continue to exercise their freedom and hold them to their own rules. I don't blame this officer, he seemed to handle this situation the best he could. God bless.👍👊🏼🇺🇸
Tuba Skinny: a City’s treasure, a State treasure, a National treasure. To be treated like this by city police is disgraceful. The Mayor would do well to treasure the musicians who continue to export their talent to the whole world. In addition to e mailing the Mayor, supporting the correct application of the law, the freedom of expression to perform like this is a matter to be closely guarded. Greetings from Derby, England.
I am sorry to tell you that there is not much 'freedom of expression' in Derby. Prospective buskers have to pass an audition by the Council to get a licence.
It is hard to believe that the Mayor would hassle the very band that puts New Orleans back on the map again. Tuba Skinny needs to be encouraged. They are incredible musicians with the most endearing music style and rhythm. TS got it all. Much love from Ireland.
I love how the Trombone player pulls out the ORDINANCE CODE from his pocket!!👍 And the COP plain out ignores what was said!!. And while there was plenty of room for them to drive by.... haha soo sad...
Dear Mayor Cantrell: International fans of Tuba Skinny as well as the many worthy buskers that make New Orleans such a special city to visit (and watch on You-tube) plead with you to do the right thing for your city - bring busking back to Royal Street. Remember also that New Orleans is the jazz capital of the world: are you not dishonouring its well-earned heritage?
@@RM-je5qw the city passed an ordinance in the last century to close down parts of Royal Street and allow pedestrian traffic. What the musicians are asking is for that to be enforced. When musicians busk on the sidewalk, then pedestrians are forced into the street. No one wins.
@@RM-je5qw Stand corrected. The city has an ordinance allowing for parts of that street to be a pedestrian mall at certain times. This is what the musicians are requesting. When it was enforced, emergency vehicles knew to reroute accordingly. Bourbon Street becomes a pedestrian walk every night and they all manage just fine
What makes New Orleans different than other cities? Bands like Tuba Skinny playing on the street. It's what makes New Orleans special and memorable and cool. Hope the band and other bands get to play where they'd like to play rather than being told by the powers that be that it's not acceptable.

Dear Mayor Cantrell, I was very disappointed to see James Sterling’s recent video of Tuba Skinny being told they could not play in their usual place on Royal Street. It is no exaggeration to say that the beautiful atmosphere which comes through in the videos of them playing in this location have persuaded my wife and me to visit the city (from England) next year. New Orleans has something extremely precious in these performances, something which other cities would dearly love to have, and which deserves to be protected and nurtured. It would be truly tragic if an overly strict (and, it is said, incorrect) interpretation of the law were allowed to stifle such a unique and beautiful thing. With Best Regards, Derek Ryden, Stroud England.
I've always loved you British for your wit, charm and keen intelligence. Wish I could've said what you did. I just said, "I'm not visiting NO if you shut down the mall to pedestrians." Tuba Skinny is New Orleans Heritage Jazz.

True Mike. The police officer is just doing the bidding of the politicians who sign his paycheck. He was firm but professional. However, he was wrong about the band obstructing traffic. You can see him and the other cars drive by unobstructed. You will see later in other videos that I will post that even large delivery trucks pass by. By the way, did you know that your grandpa is the reason the band is called Tuba Skinny?
@@tubafats100 The story is that Todd, the tuba player, was riding his bike through the Quarter with his tuba and someone yelled at him "You must be Tuba Skinny!" So this is how the band was named. This was when your grandpa was till alive.

Dear Mayor Cantrell: A few says ago, a disgrace to New Orleans played out on Royal Street. The Big Easy's own Tuba Skinny had returned to their roots busking on Royal. How lucky you are. I wish I could afford the trip from California to hear them in person and join the fun. People were dancing to the music and having a congenial good time, when a police car blared right into the middle with screaming siren. A cop raged up to the band, being unbearably aggressive and rude. Any attempt to engage in polite conversation with him he countered by shouting it down. See for yourself. Tuba Skinny confronted by N.O. Police while busking He is not a good ambassador. Why would a tourist want all that negatively? Please keep automobiles away from Royal, and keep that cop away from people. Best regards, David B. Jones
Maybe your letters to the mayor of New Orleans helped. According to an online post by WDSU-TV the police department has announced street closures to re-create the pedestrian mall. Royal Street will be closed to automobile traffic between Bienville Street and Orleans Street 11am-4pm weekdays and 11am-7pm weekends. Businesses are being notified. Is that the area in question? I've only been to New Orleans once.
If this is permanent and not just for French Quarter Festival next week, then yes it is a victory. I read the article and there is no mention of it being temporary.
Dear Senator Kennedy, You are the best thing to hit the government since canned beer. There is a music group that has helped to keep a New Orleans tradition alive named "Tuba Skinny". To say the least, they are exceptional musicians and represent what is best about your fine State. One specific tradition that had existed for years was that Royal Street was a pedestrian thruway but in recent years, it has been opened up to traffic. This greatly hinders the opportunity for your State's finest musicians to display their talents and make a few dollars at the same time. Would you please consider advising Mayor Cantrell to close Royal Street to vehicular traffic which would help to re-establish one of New Orleans' sacred traditions? I thank you for your time and anticipated courtesies in this matter.

Never been to NOLA. But the only reason I would go, would be to see the players on Royal Street. It's like the Cable Cars in San Francisco. Part of the city and a big attraction.
I am not familiar with the city of New Orleans; Unfortunately. So I can't have an opinion on how City Hall manages traffic. However, I am familiar with the fine street musicians of New Orleans through the Internet and Tuba Skinny is the crown jewel of them all. Therefore, I have a very strong opinion on their talent, virtuosity and the unique experience of watching them living the music and taking me on their wings with every note and every syncopation. Every single one of them. I hope the Mayor understands that these musicians serve, preserve and spread a very important, fundamental I would dare say, part of the American musical tradition. I hope that she realizes that New Orleans jazz is part of world music. It touches everybody around the globe. More inportantly, I hope that she can feel the music and appreciate the art like the rest of us around the world which apparently is not the case. What's the problem? Bar owners on Royal Street? Some other kind of pressure on the Mayor? Last but not least, if the Mayor knew how many times doctors like myself tuned in to the street musicians of New Orlens during the COVID 19 epidemic to listen to the uplifting music to have some strength restored to our souls to keep going, maybe, just maybe she might change her mind. If you ever find yourselves in Greece people, you're welcome to block my street all you want. Just keep playing. I'll pick up the tickets for obstructing traffic.
To the guy at 4:56 "You're blocking traffic!" Bro why the hell are you even in downtown new orleans if you care about traffic so much? Its a band, listen and shut up.
INTERESTING A HUNDRED YEARS AGO , people complained in every city in the USA that automobiles had no right to the streets , and there was 1000's of deaths a week nation wide caused by what we call traffic accidents today
The once beautiful and creative city that was New Orleans is being destroyed by politicians that literally hate it for its unique contribution to our country . Let the musicians play!!! That's what makes it so unique!! The street performers!!!
The officer was wrong and I love how when confronted with the written law he ignores the person and just keeps repeating himself like a child that doesn’t get their way, hilarious. And beings they are public servants “they Are Supposed to enforce” such written laws not interpret them (thats the judicial systems job). And I also love how police today demand respect but give None and I noticed the other officer was just stared at them (almost like he was hoping and waiting for someone to do something “they consider” a threat. My wife’s grandfather & father were career police officers and retired with honors and was not only respected in the community but (her grandfather) was awarded for never having to resort to violence or having to pull his service revolver. He remarked that 95 outta 100 situation situation can be talked down without escalating it further. It’s a shame that today’s officers seem to almost look for situations & for them to escalate, rather than being neutral and understanding. Like they have something to prove(mind you not All of them are like that but I’ll say 3/4’s are). That’s not how you get respect. All I saw in this video was a bullies picking on every day people trying to spread a little joy in what would be a otherwise depressing and dark city scape (without them). They may have to have someone for security & or a law expert with them wen they play. Because their now marked and will probably be singled out everytime they play. A shame we have to have security to protect us from our own so called public security. Good luck tuba skinny and keep playing no matter what the bullies (political & in uniform) say. 👍👍😎
Dear Mike Smith, You couldn't have said it more succinctly, congratulations. This is a person who is used to addressing everyone all day long about anything and everything, if they are then addressed on their behavior then they have a very hard time digesting it. This behavior may have been possible 50 years ago, but it is quickly forgotten that the citizen has not stood still in his or her knowledge, and also that of the legislation. I'm surprised that they both don't get more intrusive and come so close to you that you automatically start making a defensive gesture, this intimidation technique is very well known to me. Here in Rotterdam I have seen them apply the technique from very close by, in one they had made a mistake because he was aware of the trick and stood still with his hands in his pockets. I then asked a police officer standing outside the circle, aren't your colleagues trying to provoke something? He didn't react to that, but when they left he spoke briefly with the highest in rank, who then looked in my direction, thought for a few seconds and then decided to leave. Many here are falling over the attitude of the law enforcement officer, and I think quite rightly that he doesn't care about what's written in the rules but isn't implemented, tells a lot about those at the top who are thus making the failing to comply with rules agreed upon by democracies. It is very similar to what could be heard after 1945 during the Nuremberg trial,, order is order or rather Befehl ist Befehl.
@@hirondelle8734 No, that is certainly not the case, you speak with a gut feeling, sorry. Your statement, however brief, tells more about your attitude.
And I'm just betting that your wife's Father and Grandfather didn't have to deal with people who thought they had the right to set up a band on the roadway of a city. Times change, there is far less respect for law and order now than anytime in the near past. Music is great, playing it in a proper place would be more respectful of and for everyone! I am sure the Coppers have better things to do than to tell people to move back off the road, sheech! I especially like the trombone player with an attitude deserving of a 3 year old.
@@davidnapemaskwa7251 You are ignoring a very important subject, there is no follow-up to a democratic decision, which means that the executive authority disregards democracy, which tends to move in the direction of communism, if not a dictatorship. I was of the opinion that America wants to stay far away from that. If you feel addressed, it is also your job to address everyone at all times, but prefer not to be addressed yourself. Certainly there is less and I may say much less awe and respect for the police, but you have to earn awe and respect, which you do not get when handing over your certificate. In addition, the citizen is no more the citizen of about 75 years ago, as in this example, the musician is better aware of the state of affairs than he who should know and list it, even if you just wake him or her from the deepest sleep . In that respect, both enforcers still piss and shit in a diaper and are still very far away from being 3 years old, despite or thanks to the impressive car they drive and have to use the siren at all times if necessary, what kind of adolescent behaviour. They not only disgrace themselves, but take the entire enforcement corps with them in their wake, fine colleagues, that will get you far and you can be proud of it. Now I have to mention that in my opinion some of them deserve it, we have vacationed in Florida quite often, usually in the same hotel. During breakfast and sometimes during dinner, enforcers regularly came to eat there. There is nothing wrong with that, they have every right to do so, but most of them radiated such arrogance and they looked at you as if you had just made them an indecent offer when you said good morning or evening to them at the counter. Very unfortunate if you feel so far above the common citizen. Sorry if you feel addressed, but you must have noticed that we live in a completely different time. Have a very nice day

I was a Mayor for a long time (not in New Orleans though I knew a Mayor there). When police do something like that it is almost always because of a complaint. They don't care about the issue one way or another, it's just get the complaint settled and move to the next one. The siren leading up to the video a firms it was responding to a complaint. Probably a merchant along the street thinks his/her business is hurt. I used to have businesses complaining when there was a street fair or festival. It will needs lots of discussion with in City Hall but can be corrected.

EVery time I see videos of music flash mobs, I think the same thing. How much happier the world would be if music randomly popped up everywhere.
Would that law compel musicians to play on the corners if there weren't enough volunteers?
I wish every city and town had music playing. It might soothe the souls of the savage beasts we put up with now.
There's the episode of South Park with the peruvian panflute bands though... do you really want that?
@@LibbyRal Até eu Edmilson Donizete Botéquio, aqui no Brasil sempre assisto as apresentações do Tuba e programo com a família uma viagem para New Orleans, muito motivado a conhecer o pessoal do magnifico Tuba Skiny
This is an issue that the city needs to address. This music is the heart of the city and these musicians need to be encouraged.
At LEAST they should be encouraging artists. Maybe even making public spaces available for them to perform in that are desIgnated as appropriate and legal spaces. The police harassment looks really bad.
Nashville ended their ban...they found out busking is a big tourist attraction.
Agree 100%. What is N.O. without this music?
Control of its people has become much more satisfying, to the "leaders," than culture in New Orleans & other great cities.
Thankfully, we are coming out of the pandemic. Between booster vaccines and better therapies death rates are dropping. The issue WAS a valid issue in that you don't want to encourage crowds of people to congregate.
Tourists and locals alike love New Orleans because of the vibrant music scene out in the streets. Nobody goes to the City to see more CARS!
Tuba Skinny is an INSTITUTION, man.
Very well said
So well-put and to paraphrase: `Nobody ever goes to New Orleans to see more CARS!'
Such a beautiful performance. The city is absolutely crazy to prohibit busking on Royal street, it's what gives this city a reason to exist.
That it true. On the other hand, people should not be taking their anger out on the one who is tasked with enforcing the rules.
@@stepaushi what rule?
@@StephenLipps In this case, the people were blocking traffic. It's not the police officer's fault to be tasked with enforcing it.
@@stepaushi Royal in the central quarter is supposed to be closed to vehicular traffic M-F between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m., and on Saturdays and Sundays between 11 a.m. and 7 p.m. This has been the case since the early 1970s. You're right that they don't enforce it.
@@StephenLipps It's weird that the police would not know that, though. Either it's legally closed to vehicles or it's not. Do you think this is legally documented somewhere? As a Tuba Skinny fan from New Zealand I wish you every good thing. I think you have become the victims of a local grinch.
You've already demonstrated your courage and dedication. Nothing that ensues from this will diminish that in any way. I have written to the Mayor; you are the best thing that has happened to New Orleans since Louis Armstrong.

How lovely to live in a city with so little crime that the police have time to argue with street musicians...
Hey, the problem is that the Mayor isn't getting his cut. Corrupt bastards!

One of my dreams is going to New Orleans to see Tuba Skinny. For sure they have cultural and economic value for the city! Respect from Japan!
The Mayor would do well to treasure the musicians who continue to export their talent to the whole world. In addition to e mailing the Mayor, supporting the correct application of the law, the freedom of expression to perform like this is a matter to be closely guarded. Greetings from Derby, England.
This mayor hates musicians
I am sorry to tell you that there is not much 'freedom of expression' in Derby. Prospective buskers have to pass an audition by the Council to get a licence.
He needs to stand down, be removed!
This treatment of Tuba Skinny is like the NYPD telling Lady Liberty to get out of the harbor; she's blocking cargo ships.
That is a great analogy.
Brilliant...
Music like this is the lifeblood of New Orleans,a one way street only requires one lane for traffic.

I just sent my email to the mayor! Keep playing! Love that NOLA traditional jazz and especially Tuba Skinny!
Hi Jerry What's the Email Address ?
From the UK , and I can say that I am a proud Tuba Skinnyhead! You give so much joy and pleasure. More power to your elbow.
Make it official letter to major office and I belive thousands of people would back it up
@@RM-je5qw But isn't that what busking is?
@@RM-je5qw the city passed an ordinance in the last century to close down parts of Royal Street and allow pedestrian traffic. What the musicians are asking is for that to be enforced. When musicians busk on the sidewalk, then pedestrians are forced into the street. No one wins.
@@RM-je5qw Stand corrected. The city has an ordinance allowing for parts of that street to be a pedestrian mall at certain times. This is what the musicians are requesting. What a bummer. We would love to have Y'all come back to Abita Springs! Thank you so much for your fantastic set at the Abita Busker Festival. Big love from across the lake!
Dear Mayor Cantrell,
I was very disappointed to see James Sterling’s recent video of Tuba Skinny being told they could not play in their usual place on Royal Street.

A few says ago, a disgrace to New Orleans played out on Royal Street.
Police while busking
He is not a good ambassador. Why would a tourist want all that negatively?
Please keep automobiles away from Royal, and keep that cop away from people.

I am living in France. Last month there was a petition to close Roal Str. again for traffic. I hope it helps.

Dear Mike Smith,
You couldn't have said it more succinctly, congratulations.
