Can't believe those 'passers by' not being moved by the music! My feet are 'tapping' as I watch this video and I'm 5000 miles away in England! Go Tuba Skinny!
Thanks James for recording this historic moment. Tuba Skinny back where they belong and looking and sounding better than ever! It’s unbelievable that the city of New Orleans don’t recognize that they they have a world renowned band playing for free on one of their streets. If they had any sense they would close the street to traffic and rename it Tuba Skinny Boulevard!
I am a Michigander, but while visiting New Orleans I happened across this group playing in that same location. I was totally mesmerized. They're all good, but the clarinetist is just plain wild.
Your comment reminds me of that Steve Miller tune …. “My grandpa he’s 95 he keeps on dancin he’s still alive. My grandma she’s 92 she likes to dance and sing some too.” Or something like that.
Shaye's ''Wow what a feeling'' comment really captured the moment. That look of joy on her face says it all. Two years is a long time to be away from what you love to do. Tuba Skinny started out and have continued as street performers. It's what they enjoy and so nice to see them back in their element....Kudos to Mr.Sterling for capturing this moment. Also the audio was excellent..............................
Im confused. Where did they go and why? did they break up or just go on the road. I'm in socal and they have no plans on coming out this way. What a bummer.
@@nedanother9382 What Brenda is referring to is that the city closed down Royal Street to performers over two years ago and this was the band's first time back on the street since then.
@@carlomezzatesta4659 It was because the city, which for the past 50 years has had an ordinance designating Royal Street as a pedestrian mall during most daylight hours, had allowed vehicular traffic instead. This initially happened before Covid when the Hard Rock Hotel nearby collapsed causing the street around it to be closed. After the hotel debris was cleared and the street around it reopened the city refused to return Royal St. to its former status. The bands organized a protest on this day by playing in the street. The publicity then caused the city to reinstate the pedestrian mall.
I discovered and fell head over heels with Tuba Skinny during lockdown. Cheers from Michigan. I’m going to show some of their videos to my elem. students during a jazz unit this year. I think they’ll eat it up!

SO GOOD to see Tuba Skinny back on Royal St. When we come to NOLA we stay on Royal a few blocks from 501 and I now want to come back just to try to catch y'all on the street! I caught y'all at the old Starlite lounge once. See 'ya soon! Cheers from Texas. (Thanks James - YOU are doing great work.)

Excellent music. A platform type stage on the sidewalk needs to be designed for this awesome group. They are keeping a great musical tradition Alive.....
Thanks very much, James. It's amazing to think they have been playing this very enjoyable tune for about three and a half years, though they haven't yet found a place for it on an Album. When Clarence Williams recorded it with his band - 'The Clarence Williams Jazz Kings' - in New York on 28 May 1929, Williams himself was on piano. He had nobody playing a banjo or guitar. Tuba Skinny as usual show great respect for the original. For example, after the Introduction, Shaye and Craig (from 00:12 to 00:52) take a turn each at playing the melody while the other plays the catchy response phrases, just as Ed Allen and Arville Harris did in the 1929 recording. Also, like Clarence Williams, Tuba Skinny play the tune in the key of F, until the introduction of the new 16-bar theme (01:52) where they switch to B flat. There are some impressive improvisations on this B flat theme - notably Shaye's at 02:52. What a super Coda, too (04:30 - 04:48): you don't find that on the Clarence Williams original. What an exemplary performance all round.
Agreed. As they always do, they constantly refine a tune the longer they play it. That's why I never tire hearing this band. Each performance is fresh no matter how many times they have played a song.
Thanks for this special treat, Jim. What a delightful video. Tuba Skinny being photo-bombed by traffic is not half as bad as being asked to "push back" by NOLA police on behalf of City Council and the Mayor.
What does "push back" mean in those circumstances? Couldn't they play on the sidewalk? But I suppose that's not wide enough and pedestrians would have to walk in the road, which NOLA's finest wouldn't like.
I'm still waiting for Tuba Skinny to come to San Diego. I'd put everything on hold to see them. Of course I have never been to New Orleans but if I do I'm going to plan my trip specifically to see Tuba.

What a wonderful band! And so so good to hear them back on the street again, like before. Little Shaye looks so happy, bless her. She and Craig Flory are consummate musicians. ❤❤
Great video James! I felt like I was standing in the middle of Royal St. and the band never sounded better. I absolutely love seeing them back on Royal St. where they belong!
Incredible. They modulated as smooth as silk. Their licks are just beyond classic. It takes a great grasp of music theory to play at this level. Most classically trained musicians couldn’t make it here.
The years roll by and you continue to keep us up to the minute with the finest of Tuba Skinny which I thank you for.I listen for new music daily.Again would love to see them in person in Montreal Quebec Canada at our summer Jazz festivals.A guaranteed success.
Brilliant sound and a great place for filming the band so close. A real Royal Street Busking feeling. Thanks for filming and sharing here with us. Best wishes to you Dave from Berlin Germany. 👋
I am so sorry. I meant Todd, who in my opinion is so important to the band. In his position as bass instrument he does musical things that would not be possible elsewhere, like the elephant trumpets that he does. But I love them all.
A big thank you Jim for going out of your way to capture this important event. Royal Street once again sounded the best music. Especially the final "yeh, yeh, yeh" was outstanding👍😃😉
After watching this 6 or 8 times I am still amazed at the audio quality. Even with the occasional traffic the sound is perfectly clear and strong. If you didn't know you would think they were playing in a studio......................
Thanks. The acoustics there were exceptional. And this was recorded using the camera and audio from my cell phone. I have a separate audio recorder but did not use it this day.
