- Top Deck this wonderful warm and sunny afternoon onboard Paddle Steamer The Natchez, before cruising down and up the mighty Mississippi, Tuba Skinny made their first appearance on the River. Quoting from Steamboat Stomp's presentation: "Tuba Skinny came together in New Orleans in 2009 as a loose collection of street musicians and has since evolved to a fully formed professional band. Their unique sound evokes the rich musical heritage of New Orleans from the early jazz and blues and the twenties and thirties, ragtime, and traditional jazz. The band consists of tuba, trombone, cornet, tenor banjo/guitar,
vocals, washboard, and occasionally clarinet. The band has gained a loyal following through their distinctive sound, their commitment to reviving long-lost songs, and their barnstorming live performances."
Erika Lewis (v&drum), Todd Burdick (tuba), Jason Lawrence (bnj), Max Bien-Kahn (g), Shaye Cohn (cornet), Barnabus Jones (tb), Robin Rapuzzi (washboard), Tomas Majcherski (sax) and Craig Flory (cl).

One of the many things I like about this band is that they do not blare. They play in a controlled disciplined way that is very effective. No one is trying to be heard above the others. Each player seems to be listening for the overall effect. Great ensemble playing and unique.

It is traditional in Dixieland jazz for every musician in the band to get a solo.
@@uncbadguy You miss my point. Even when someone is playing a solo, they are playing as part of the ensemble and are hearing their solo as part of the ensemble sound.

Erica Lewis has the most amazing voice, so unique, so her own. Not unlike a comparison to Bob Dylan, she creates her own genre. Watching her thump that bass, like an afterthought, just blows us away. Sorry I cannot name all the band members, but the brass and clarinet just smoke red hot. The fine looking man on the banjo, he too has this reedy tenor that just takes

I've had the pleasure to play bass with many fine artists in dixieland and pop music for nearly 65 years. Saw them in New Orleans in May 2016 and was blown away. Very tight and tasty band. You can tell they love playing this music. Just awesome ,

I can picture myself sitting at a card table A big stogie in one hand and a glass of bourbon positioned in front of a pile of chips. A lovely Lady at my shoulder running the back of her hand against my neck. A group of riverboat card sharks siting around said table matching wits with me as "Tuba Skinny" plays that music which brings me luck. That would be my idea of Heaven!
Erika lewis is phenominal singer she really makes this music pull you into this era...so iconic yet unique...just a very professional polished well seasoned group of old souls...you would have to really love this music to be as passionate as each musician clearly is...every instrument including the vocal chords are just pure dixy just gorgeous ...all old souls who never wanted their music or creativity to die...sometging mysterious and loveable about these perfectly wonderful brilliant stars...i hope they dont ever stop shining their light. Just heaven sent ...

I just found out about this band about 2 weeks ago and I can't get enough of their music they are fantastic.
I really enjoy listening to Tuba Skinny. They are a TRUE BAND. This means: not "somebody's band", or anything like that - it's a group doing group work, sounding complete, all members are needed and essential to the sound. Wonderful and fantastic.
Just a pure delight to listen to the way they execute their skills and talents. A real gift to those who appreciate what it takes to perform at this level. I wouldn't say flawless, but da- - close to perfection.

But they sound best without electronic interference.
I play cornet and the electronic gymnastics to get it to sound right, under amplification, can be a major task.
