My mum, aged 92 when she died last year, enjoyed endless hours of great pleasure watching your videos on her phone in her town in Brazil. On her last years she couldn't get out of bed, but she had this music as a great companion. Thank you so much for her joy!!
In 2022 we are transported by this music to a place and time born out of the soil and the mud and the moonlit waters of a mighty river that crawls lazily across the continent like a giant anaconda. We can feel the sweat on the backs of out grandfathers as we hug them coming out the hot sun from the flat green field. We can taste the ice cold Coca Cola in green bottles and see the green flashes of lighting bugs in the dusk. The dawn is cool, the grass is wet, the promise of another day has arrived. Soon it will be Autumn.
My father, who died in 2004, and who was a New Orleans Jazz enthusiast from the 1920s would have loved your Band. Even though he never heard you, hearing you now maked me think of him. Thank you
I saw this wonderful band in New Orleans in 2023. One member was kind enough to help us get a taxi as he was leaving and we were confused, what a caring gentleman, I will never forget it. I have heard in person most of the great traditional jazz bands for the past 63 years and this is one of them.
Love this music, it is healing! That said, recovering from two serious accidents and nearly lost my life! As humans, we need so much more of this. Had the privilege of visiting New Orleans over 10 years ago. Doubt there is any place on the planet that can match its creativity and soulfulness. It is like a spiritual experience! Thanks again, Adele Crowder
This is Tuba Skinny instrumental. The vocal accompaniments by Erika Lewis in other recordings are SO "N'Awlin's," and the sounds heal a soul. Every member of this ensemble is immaculate and unforgettable. I'd be proud to have them dirge and glorify my funeral!
Tuba Skinny, i follow you since several years and I love you 😃, I not only love to listen your music , It's a special treat to see you play , specially greatings from Vienna/Austria
This wonderful music takes me back to the late 1950s when I followed Mr. Ackerman Bilk and his band playing in South London pubs. It wasn’t main stream then nor is it now, but UTube has brought this to me in Selkirk, Manitoba, Canada. Thank you Tuba-skinny you’re an amazing bunch of very talented musicians.
Mr.Acker Bilk, Kenny Ball and Chris Barber were the best at that time. Today Tuba Skinny are of the same excellent quality. It is a pleasure to listen - no matter whether they are playing in a concert hall or at a street corner. Beautiful.
Great days! I wasn't born then but in the late 1980s used to go trad jazz nights, mostly at the 100 Club, I saw Humphrey Lyttleton there a couple of times. Back then there were still some of the original beatniks around, and they used to take it very seriously. As a teenage lad it felt like being transported 40 years into the past. One of the good things was they didn't expect youngsters at these places, and so we could get away with drinking underage!
I was and still am very close friends to a lovely girl who’s father designed and made clarinets for Ackerman Bilk. Sadly he suffered from diabetes and his eyesight failed him, but he was a delight to be around when I was an 18 year old boy. Just gotta love this wonderful music though. Reminds me of Disneys Alley Cats…..what a great way getting kids in to jazz!
OK! It's late. There's this itch to hear some jazz and my addiction brings me here. As always this gang make the world seem sane and we are doing just fine. Thanks T.S.
Man! I seriously don't know where I have been all these years to come and just discover Tuba Skinny today 2 June, 2024. 😪 It's 11:15pm; I'm seated mixing my music and I'm looking for a perfectly mixed tuba sound and I stumble upon these guys. No going back from here. 😂 I've been seated here for a while now and I temporarily forgot about what I was doing because of the sheer beauty of this music here. Awesome!!
Love the songs "it ain't nobody's business " "sweetheart" ," And lou Armstrong no. And "ring those golden bells"(Shane's harmony excellent) great singing mate! Clarinet player...you squeeze notes out like the last bit of toothpaste..awesome. Just love each players ability/ talent. And of course Shane.. she's awesome!
Love this! Takes me back to late 60s - early 70s when I was introduced to this music in and around Detroit by several Dixie friends like Tom Saunders (Tommy the Tuba), the late Bill Roper and many others. I spent many a happy night listening to them and sometimes sitting in…(Sorry, no video…no You Tube back then! 😢).
What a wonderful set. Music to make the soul feel better. Thankyou Tuba Skinny 👏👏. I could listen to “when the golden bells ring” all day. Just beautiful. And Shaye on vocals too!
Tubaskinny should soon be added to the new smartTv,s music you tube channel. They are missing out on the best New Orleans jazz band ever. This band is many more smart Tv,s
The band plays itself into my soul, they are such soulful musicians and their leader on cornet tells wonderful stories with their instrument. Pay attention to the man on the sousaphone, he plays so great exat in rhythm. It's difficult with this instrument because it always takes a while for the sound to come out at the top. I used to play the tuba a few times myself and I know the challenge. My heart belongs to the slide man, I love playing this instrument, that's what I've learned. I sit there, listen and dream of New Orleans and Tuba Skinny. Best wishes from the forest! Paul 🇩🇪
Your music makes me, even if my mood is already well, nearly crying the way it makes me feel lucky :-)) couldn't stop my hips from swinging and my feet dancing every time it comes on!
I began loving Dixieland when a little boy lying in bed at night and getting New Orleans on my radio. I guess I slept about half the night. I knew the names of all the greats. When my mom got me a trumpet for Beginner's Band it had belonged to my cousin and had Dixieland books in it. I took them down to the music store, had the owner show me the fingerings for the notes, and began playing. That was out in western Oklahoma where I could never find anyone to play with.
I have seen this band develop over many years - they have always been more than good, now they are really great! They know that the old Jazz records and charts are just suggestions - not maps that must be exactly followed! They have the feel for it. This is something so many other bands need to learn... (I've been playing this sort of stuff since the 70s, also had a radio show for 25+years - I know a bit about it. ;-) )
Jamming along with this on bass guitar, brings up a LOT! Here in the Netherlands, N'Awlins was always there, even before Dr. John in 1970. Being an LSD Frisco underground type, I did not like Dixieland, but it had an undeniable quality, that could compete with the many other styles here in Europe. There wasn't much of it, but kept a strong support. Some radiostations and bands kept on playing it ever since. But jamming along with this now, is really an eye opener. As an amateur, I've played bass for 50 years, and like to play along with the hundreds of styles from all over the world here on RUclips. Jamming along, forces you to get deep into the music and it's players. That connection reveals what it is to be a human being, and how to produce creative art. And the N'Awlins style here, certainly does that! Simplicity does it here. It breathes: We are simply here, so we (together) do what we like! :-) But playing simple is not that simple. It requires béing simple. No, you don't have to lower your IQ to below 80, or restrict yourself to dull musical lines. It requires to become your simple self. And perhaps it is especially hard for bass or tuba players. The music forces you to keep it really really simple. That means, you have to let go of all your pretences, and stop taking yourself too seriously. Every few seconds, you are forced to return to simplicity. But the better you do that, a complete new world of opportunities opens. Every time you do it really simple, there seems to be an ocean of neat tricks, you can add if you want. It's complete freedom, but only if you keep being your simple self. Yes, N'Awlins is a new adventure to me. I do hope, anyone can hear and feel it the same way. N'Awlins music always was an Icon of bacic human existence, or human survival in hard times. A golden escape goat? :-) The French, the Blacks, and all misery. Or Marie Laveau? :-) And yes, we do remember the flood and George W. Bush in the Netherlands. I embrace every good sound, coming from there again..
And yes, tuba - if you can't find anyone - could be replaced by bass guitar. But to do that well, you must forget all about pop and jazz styles. Those can easily spoil everything here. I managed to adapt to the style, making it sound like the tuba does. (finger style, not a pick) You can even do better, because bass has more attack, giving more room for all kinds of subtleties. But it has to be done carefully, because it dominates very fast.
Wonderful wonderful soul-soothing music indeed. That bluesy yet cool and solemn " When They Ring Those Golden Bells" (1:02:00) simply melts this heart of mine away. Thank you Tuba Skinny.
A great video and another superb performance from Shaye, showing what a great musician she is. So talented - is it weird to have a huge crush on her? lol! 😂😍
From a young child, my dad introduced me to jazz and it opened up a whole New World for me and I mean from a child he’s gone now but when I play jazz videos, I think Tony D Thank you
These musicians pay tribute to their forebearers from the first half of the 20th century and carry on their traditions into the 21st century. Thank you Shaye Cohn for your skill, good tase, and intelligence to select and enlist the cooperations of your fellow musicians. Cheers to all!

Thank you!

Later I adapted to Western Swing, which I play now on a fiddle at age 85.
I have seen this band develop over many years - they have always been more than good, now they are really great! They know that the old Jazz records and charts are just suggestions - not maps that must be exactly followed! They have the feel for it. This is something so many other bands need to learn... (I've been playing this sort of stuff since the 70s, also had a radio show for 25+years - I know a bit about it. ;-) )
I know nothin bout it, sept I love it!
The original tunes are incredible! Good to hear fresh tunes. Shaye should sing more too.
Fantastic, so glad to have found this band. 🥰🇬🇧
come to the UK great music i'm loving it 😀
Even in the heart of Europe (Austria) we like to hear those great Music. Keep on!
