- Join us on Saturday, June 25, 2022 at 8pm for the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Foundation’s Concert Series with Tuba Skinny at the George and Joyce Wein Jazz & Heritage Center, 1225 N. Rampart Street. Doors open at 7pm and the concert begins promptly at 8pm.
About Tuba Skinny:
For over a decade Tuba Skinny has grown steadily in popularity, releasing twelve albums and touring all over the world. They’ve attracted a wide variety of fans- young and old, neophytes and niche-enthusiasts- with the strength of their musicianship and the scope of their jazz and American roots music catalog.
While they’ve become known as world-class interpreters of traditional jazz, over the years they’ve branched out into jug band music, spirituals, country blues, string band music, ragtime, and New Orleans R&B. Their approach is a true reflection of Americana, encompassing the full genealogy of popular American music from an early 20th century perspective.
Despite a general lack of interest in social media and a limited release of their music online, they’ve amassed an enthusiastic digital following.
After a decade of playing (mostly) other artist’s songs, Tuba Skinny decided to fulfill a long-time dream with the release of Magnolia Stroll- their first album of all-original tunes. Featuring compositions from Erika, Shaye, Robin, Barnabus, Craig, and Max, it is their love song to all the musicians, living and dead, who have inspired them, as well as to the neighborhoods of New Orleans that have nurtured them.

I have listened to this fine group for years and they never fail to please. They are technically perfect and traditionally sound. I love the way she conducts the team so quietly. I am sorry that Erika was not in this performance. Her vocals are brilliant: they all are!
I dig the new trombone player.
Makes a huge difference to any band does the standard of the trombone player , I'm not taking anything away from the usual slideman and this concert is a great example

Thing that makes this songf is that no one knows it better than the players and these are among the best IMHO.

Whoever wrote some of these titles on the videos did Tuba Skinny a disservice. For example, it is not Ball in the Jack but Ballin' the Jack---a dance, for Pete's sake. Tuba Skinny, best dixieland jazz in America.

It's great to hear Greg singing. I love his style! I miss Erika Lewis (vocal and bass drum) and Barnabus Jones (trombone). But the sound is still great.
The new guy on the swallow stick is super. Of course, we all love Erika. I do wish when she's not in the group, they would have someone (Robin?) play a kick drum.

'I've Been Blue Ever Since You Went Away' (starting at 17:47 and played in A flat) - a 32-bar a-a-b-a tune composed and recorded in 1930 by Papa Charlie McCoy - seems to be a brand-new addition to the band's repertoire. Has anyone ever heard them play it before? Charlie McCoy was a Mississippi musician (a member of The Mississippi Sheiks, in fact), who lived from 1909 to 1950. Hi Pops, love all your posts! Tuba Skinny played this tune a bunch of years ago, the only version I've heard is this: ruclips.net/video/f9phP_K_OTU/видео.html , which is really fantastic, with Stale Bread Scottie singing lead vocal. It sounds to me like they're singing "I've been good since you went away baby" which is also logical, but my guess is they're saying "blue ever since". Thanks again!
Many thanks, Christopher. You have certainly cleared that up. What confused me was that the one song was given two different titles. In the Scottie video, it was called (quite reasonably) 'Please Come Back To Me'. But the correct title - given by the composer - is 'I've Been Blue Ever Since You Went Away'.

Now I am in Bourbon street finding Tuba Skinny's New Orleans Jazz!!!! But I can not hear a single New Orleans jazz~ instead there are only loud rock band to entice people~ so commercialize street~
