Daniel Craig was an amazing James Bond but you gotta love Sean Connery's Bond. His face was just a perfect image of what Bond should look like.

Connery was THE BEST "Bond". He owned the role more than any other. He had the look and could do the physicality. At the time actors never really had to go through the same physical training as todays actors (e.g. Henry Cavil for Superman) or Stallone for his Rambo films. Connery also had that rare combination of elegance and strength. Something Roger Moore didn't have. He had the look, the Bondesque handsomeness but couldn't do the physical. So his films were about the gadgets, beautiful exotic exotic women and lots of jokes with sexual innuendo. Craig, I feel doesn't have "the look" but manages to "fit into the role" with good acting and can do the physicality. Add...Craig's Bond films marked a change...towards being more Jason Borune in that the fight scenes were more "real". The choreography wasn't contrived. Hands and feet waving in front of the camera so that you couldn't see what was going on.
Brosnan was like Moorre. Had the look but couldn't do the physical. Brosnan's films were weak as well. Poor writing.
I liked how (in RUclips clips of Spectre) they brought back that "super villian" (haven't seen the actual movie yet...still...waiting for the 4k HDR Bluray). I miss the villians of old Bond films...as we saw in Connery's and Moore's Bond films. With those secret lairs. Mega fortresses.
They also had the exotic sophisticated world-class beauties. Something later Bond films began to lack. Something Bond fans DO want to see too IMHO.
Odd and maybe minor point. If in the Craig Bond films they can actually make Bond nude in that torture scene (which I think was a mistake...because we're talking about BOND...I feel Bond should never be captured ever...definitely no nudity unless in a love scene...at most Bond might get nicked by a stray bullet..bruised from a fight..that it). Why has there never been any naked Bond women? I mean if they are going for more realism...having bond sitting naked in a chair with no seat having his nads smashed (another NO NO for the Bond character IMHO)...maybe a 0012 another 00 agent...but not Bond.
Monica Bellucci has done nudity...I'm sure she should have been willing to show some skin for the film..in a tasteful way of course...

Daniel Craig. The best description of his bond is that he has inherited the mantle of the broken man from George Lazenby and Timothy Dalton.
The pain, dulled by the drink and the women.
And for that he is magnificent.
The very best Bond, the closest to the books' bond.

I completely agree with you. Craig has re-invented Bond (who badly needed a reboot) by making him into a completely different character - his own take on 007! He is the best actor to play him since Dalton who was underrated. I still consider Dalton to be the most authentic of them all. He apparently read all of Fleming's novels prior to taking the role and even referred to them while on set. He was a Shakespearean method actor who felt obliged to stay close to the original source material.

The element that distinguished Connery's Bond portrayal from his successors was his ability to project a sense of physical danger; particularly in Dr. No and From Russia With Love, the viewer got the feeling that Connery could knock an enemy agent's head off his shoulders. Neither Moore nor Dalton was able to convey this dangerous impression. Brosnan to a degree.

for high-octane, hard hitting action packed Bond, Daniel Craig nails it. To me, it's not really a question of a favorite Bond but a question of what quality you see Bond as. In fact, Roger Moore himself was impressed on Craig. He said this: "Daniel Craig impressed me so greatly in his debut outing, Casino Royale, by introducing a more gritty, unrefined edge to the character that I thought Sean might just have to move over. Craig’s interpretation was like nothing we’d seen on screen before; Jimmy Bond was earning his stripes and making mistakes. It was intriguing to see him being castigated by M, just like a naughty schoolboy would be by his headmaster.

The early connery ones are really impressive for the their time, the train fight is among the finest bond fights there is. Great choreography and brutal. Craig and Connery is the toughest, most physical actors yet imo. Brosnan has 007 vs 006 in goldeneye but really no other great ones. Moore fights were probably the most lame, even though I find most of them highly entertaining. Lazenby also the hotel room fight. Dalton had no really good fight except for Cargo plane battle against necros (not brutal but unique and badass). Necro against the mi6 agent was also intense and brutal, probably the best in the film (but it wasn`t bond that was doing the fighting)

Egg Sandwich TV What is your point? Sure some of connerys movies were cheesy, it began mainly with YOLT and escalated with DAF (which started the corny style of the 70s bond). I still think he had some of the best fights, even the horrendous DAF has the elevator fight.

It does. Fact is Daniel Craig is as the first actor to truly embody Ian Fleming's James Bond from the original novel: ironic, brutal and cold. In other words, a ruthless, killing machine.

This is how I favor my Bonds and how I see it. If you want true classic vintage as a favorite for Bond, Sean Connery is top choice. If you favor second best, it's George Lazenby. If you're in for a good laugh and favor Bond for comedy, Roger Moore fits that category. If you favor the darker and gothic side of James Bond, Timothy Dalton is the answer. And if you want typical modern day uber-classic espionage of Bond, favor Pierce Brosnan and finally if you're looking for an upgrade (continued)...

The reason why Craig really appeals to me was that especially in Casino Royale, their was a sense of realism not in the other bonds movies. The movie focused around a poker game, wasn't structured like the other bond movies and wasn't over-the top with its gadgets and action.. Craig is an excellent actor for a "real Bond"

What stuntmen lived about Sean was when he hit he ment it, many of them left the set badly brused! And they loved it as it was raw, real and honest!

I like to think Craig is more true to the way Fleming saw the character, or at least more like how such a person would actually be in reality. People seem to forget that when the original Bond movies were out action stuff was always very camp and kind of over the top. Things have really changed since then and people tend to expect a little more realism and grit in modern action films. They're both the best actors for the job at the time they were cast in my opinion.

If they had been really smart this is how they would've set things up from the start. Having "James Bond" as his cover/code name works just perfectly and also silences all those people who are always complaining that he never hides his identity :)
Still, only hindsight is 20-20. Who was too know how successful and long running the franchise was going to become!

i think Daniel Craig's bond is a mix between Connery's and Dalton's. Dalton was the first bond to be more dark and gritty. People who don't like the latest bond reboot need to take into consideration that they are keeping the films modern and are changing and adapting to make Bond better and less predictable. The only comparison I can think of is the old Batman films and how they changed to a better more up to date realistic tone in Christopher Nolan's trilogy

@Brady2k10 He played Remington Steel, even when he became bond. He looked the best as bond, but he didn't have all the same characteristics as Bond, from the books. The only actors who were able to do that were Connery, Dalton, and Craig.

Well when they were saying that Sean Connery was going to cameo in Skyfall I thought that this was the route they were taking. I thought Sean was going to be like his mentor and the previous Bond, but they ended up killing that idea. According to the writers James Bonds real name is James Bond, and none of the other bonds exist within the same movieverse. But what throws me off is that M was played by Judi Dench in the Pierce Brosnan movies too.

  • @eternal0star

FYI Ian Fleming didn't want Connery as Bond originally but ended up liking him so much that he actually wrote a scottish history to James Bond. So in Ian Fleming's eyes, Connery WAS Bond.
