This was a really interesting video presentation Andrew. I've often wondered how the interior height of coaches varied. Thanks for the video presentation!
Another big difference is the construction materials. Prevost is stainless steel monocoque. The Newell uses a unique method comprising of a steel frame from the floor down combined with an all aluminum structure from the floor up. This technique contributes to lowering the C/G of the Newell which can yield a better handling coach. The end-caps are a composite material.
Great video Andrew; hopefully this is part1. I'd love to know your impression of the driving differences, how they feel to the driver, quietness & stability. Keep 'em coming!
being a Volvo semi truck Driver driving the H3 would give me the feel of my rig more especially being volvo based -but let me tell you the REAL American old sckool trucker have serious hate for anything Volvo- thats just the way they are ! now ive owned volvo tractors for 21 years im a fan but im in a serious minority- i just spewing the truth up in here :)
We have a Prevost Liberty Coach conversion and do not have any experience with a Newell, but have heard that negatives for Newell are: Less Quality (= higher maintenance cost), Reliability (Prevost are designed/built to run a million miles or more), Safety (Prevost have a commercial bus structural frame and roll cage that provide more safety for driver and passengers), and that Prevost have much higher resale value. Perhaps you can further explore and let us know what you find? Thanks
Great information! I’ve always wondered the differences. Take examples of all three for a drive on a windy day and compare the effects of a strong cross wind with driving dynamics!
In terms of actual measurements, I believe the H3s are overall taller - 149" if I'm not mistaken. The XLIIs are 143.5". H3-45: bigger storage bays, a little less head room, offset (lower) driver seat, & overall a taller coach XLII/X3-45: shorter storage bays, slightly more head room, driver seat flush with the rest of the coach, and overall a shorter coach
Wow Andrew thanks for pointing some of the differences in each. At Tampa we got to walk on several Prevost, a Newell and several Foretravels. We liked Newell the best. Modern style, good headroom, quad slide gave a lot of interior space and big storage bays. Also really well build and nice detail. Prevost was beautiful also. I think a sleeper many ignore are the a Foretravel coaches. Half the price of the others, long reliable reputation and really beautiful coaches. Thanks again for the video. Izzy
Differences in ride between the 3 would make a good video also. Do you recall why Mark Martin chose the Newell over the Prevost for his personal coach?
The Newell has a large single windshield vs the Prevost with twin smaller windshields. The Newell also has a custom frame structure designed for the RV while the Prevost is a standard transport bus like structure that has been converted. The drivetrains are a Cummins 605 hp in the Newell vs the Prevost Volvo D13 500 hp. The Newell also features Porsche Design external components that enhance the coaches drivability and aero dynamics with improved cooling for the rear mounted engine. I would take the Newell over any of the custom Prevost coach conversions if $$$ were no object. They are all beautiful coaches and would be a pleasure to own. Great job.
TORQUE in an engine is what really provides the oomph in going down the road not horsepower....also at what rpm does power max out and how wide the power is spread out over the power band is most important and what delivers the great driving experience.
One MAJOR difference is the Newell has a steerable tag axle and a slightly shorter wheelbase. That makes the Newell significantly more nimble. Just because the map shows that you can get from point A to point B, doesn't mean that it'll be easy and the shorter turning radius of the Newell can make all the difference getting into a space in a tight campground.
I don't know what year the Newell is, but most of the Newer ones have 25K towing capacity, so that's a difference and they also have the Cummins 605hp which is about 100 more HP than the Prevost.
A couple of differences I don't think were mentioned - the Newells have rear tag axle steering, as well as a ZF computer-controlled damping system. From what I have heard they are a superior handling coach when you're going down the road.
I wonder what the maintenance cost of the computer controlled dampening system is? And what about keeping that tag axle aligned to the other axles properly?
H3 has a lower cockpit and you step up into the coach. X3 (current x series) has a cockpit on the same level as the rest of the coach as well, also the X3 has stainless steel sides and the H3 doesn't. What year is the XL2? Great vid Andrew and as always stay safe and give Sadie some love for me.
i like a direct side by side comparison. For me personally the stainless siding is what makes the coach, so XL or XL2 it is. I think an H3 with siding would be a winner. What is the difference in cost for replacing one of the 2 huge windshields vs one of the 4 smaller ones? Since i personally prefer the travel\entertainer coaches over the fulltime live in ones, slides are not a big seller to me. would be different in a small camping trailer of course. headroom seems fine in all 3 since i am not over 6 foot tall. the big bays on the H3 are great. So somebody start building an H3 with the XL or XL2 siding. If i ever win the lottery, which would surprise me since i don't play..., XL2 with full off grid solar, no gen set, no LPG, no slide, bath and a half travel\entertainer coach with outside tailgating kitchen would be what i would order.
That ain't no Winnebago Brave!!!! Don't forget to ask this guy about the $50,000 repair bill on the Prevost for delamination. But hey if you're spending that kind of money on a Prevost. What's another $50 grand to repair it. If you're considering buying one pre-owned make sure you check for delamination. The one with rivets don't do that if I remember correctly. Just a thought.
A few VERY BIG KEY DIFFERENCES, stats approximately given, Newell steel chasis with aluminum studs 53k pounds. Prevost, if I recall, uses a unified weld of chasis and wall studs, both being 404 grade stainless steel for the same weight range but safer in a collision than steel aluminum mixed configuration. Also, check inverter capacity seen some Prevost, Millennium maybe? 14,000 Watt and Foretravels Prevost conversion is like 2 at 3,500 watts for 7k total. Prevost also seems to have the largest fresh, grey, and black and fuel capacities, too, for boondocking and travel ranges with 250-268 gallons diesel. Yes, Prevost 500 hp is lower than Cummins 600 hp, but look at the other capacity increases and steel studs you get for that rough 1500 pound weight reduction in the Prevost. Also, more service locations by factoring truckstops, Volvo dealers, converter service centers, and Prevost service centers vs. Newell, freightliner, and truckstops for power train. For the same cost 2-2.5 million, I would choose Prevost because of capacities, storage, and larger options for road service/repair choices and all steel structure vs. mixed metals. Just my 2 cents. Thoughts?
Newell is built from scratch as a motorhome coach! The others have to be built by a conversion company like Marathon or Featherlight. Newell also has way better power because of the Cummins engine
Head room: Probably 3” more in the XL versus the H3..? I’m 5’11” so for me it wouldn’t matter. Storage Bays: The H3 obvious winner! Slides: No slides - no problems. (Maybe) Construction: I believe frames are stainless on both Prevost and Newell. However I’d probably give Prevost the edge on overall rigidly between lower chassis and upper compartment. I personally like the stainless sides over fiberglass. Prices: No data given. XL probably the most affordable..?
Newell’s have an aluminum framed body with an aluminum skin exterior on top of a custom steel chassis. The only fiberglass is on the front and rear caps. As for prices Newell’s start at about $2MM but, being they are highly customizable the price can easily climb.
Very informative. Thank you. I wonder if the H3 is better of worse that the XLll from a driving perspective given the lower position. Seems higher would be better ?
First of all, I'm only 5'5" so the ceiling height is of no concern to me. But the Newell, to me, is the one I would choose. All of them are really beautiful coaches but the Newell is my favorite.

I have been looking for videos about the difference in driving a Newell and a Prevost. Does the Prevost drive much better or does it not? If the driving exspensive is as good in a Newell as in a Prevost. Then the Newell is a winner to me. 🙂
The Newells certainly ride and drive better, and have some unique technologies not in the Prevost, but the Prevost would have a larger service network simply because of their use as touring coaches. That being said both coaches use components that are common in the industry, such as the Cummins engine in the Newell that can be serviced at any Cummins shop.
@@joyfulpyro2589 happy to help. If you're in the market for one definitely drive both. Ultimately it would probably come down to personal preference as they are both objectively good coaches.
Hi Andrew, I enjoy watching your videos and learning about all the perks of each motor coach out there. I do have a question for you , as my wife and I will be looking to purchase a motor coach in the next 4 months. When you find a motor coach that checks off each box except one, would the manufacturer assist in making a change to the floor plan such as fitting bunks inside? When we take our coach out on trips, I don't spend my quality time down in the basement, so for us, the additional headroom in the coach is much more important than how much room is in a storage compartment. Im thinking for our next coach I will have to go to a custom builder. I want TWO full length slides, one on each side. I don't want 3-4 individual slides. So far, I have not seen any coach manufacturer do this. I also want a retractable awning that comes off the front of the coach to block the heat/sun from the main windows. It should retract and be hidden up and behind the front end cap. I never understood why people put BLACK "sun shades" over their main window. All that does is attract heat and make the coach dark. Makes no sense. I had a custom White screen made which blocks as much sun but the coach is not nearly as hot as the black one that came with the coach.
The power from the 60 series Detroit or the newer Volvo is more than adequate if your not going to race it. If you chose the XL prevost you lose storage height over the H3 but can get more head room. No body makes a better shell than Prevost.
You can customize a Provost anyway you want if you have the money. The Provost will last twice as long. If you have the money buy the Provost if not the Newell.
