I do strongly believe he could go pretty deep in some major tournaments if he can get some rhythm going; he's just been shit out of luck and still seemingly (slowly) getting his mojo back
Both of them have such beautiful tennis games. So much fun to watch. I think Felix needs to get into the net more and Thiem needs to learn the 2017-2021 Fed backhand where he flattens it out on the rise. He loses too much ground taking all those one handers on his back foot
Agreed. Thiem did the fed backhand u are referring to a couple times in the 1:25 point but as soon as he gets on the back foot Felix gets on his forehand
Tough first round match for both of them. Given their style of play, it had the potential to be a long match. They both are a good example of how competitive the ATP is but like many at the top (who had fallen in the rankings), these two can rise again.
FAA was leading 2-0 when I left for tennis practice...and was still playing when I came home! 😂 Wow! 5 hours of intense tennis, what a marathon! Great victory for Felix's confidence! 💪
best match of AO 2024 so far...what a wonderful performance for both of them...such an intensity at every rally...in my opinion there is one winner of this match: the tennis beauty on full display...
Shout out to the AO radio commentators who kept proceedings fun despite a VERY long day. This match was yet another insane R1 five setter. Even the seagulls needed them to wrap it up. FAA's flight plan took the long route to victory. Way to not close out the 3rd set TB, let Theme back in, get tight during the 4th set, & almost get broken AGAIN at the start of the 5th. When he gets scared, Felix stops coming to net & takes too much time to serve which then messes him up. He gets too precious under pressure. Sometimes you just have to bulldoze your way through & get it done.
Agreed. Strong analysis. Towards the end, it seemed like Felix loosened up on his backhand and started swinging out. He's a different player when he gets racquet head acceleration on the backhand. I think Felix just needs to relax out there and let his game fly. Forget the expectations and all that. Just swing.
It seemed FAA did stay aggressive but your point was aggressive by attacking the net. Yes he should attack more he has good volleys and nice touch at the net. I think a serve and volley would be a game changer for FAA.
Happy for FAA. Think he should be top 10. Very happy for Theim. He may not have won today. But showed he can compete at the highest level. He will get the nod soon. What heart in both. Super five setter match for Round 1. Wow. FAA won and now needs to refill the tank. Cheers gentlemen.

Cause I dont think the wrist or the rhytm are the main issue anymore.. Always rooting for him to get back to his top form
@bernardocallahan you realize he's playing against Felix, one of the few guys that took Nadal to 5 sets at RG, and also gave Alcaraz and Djokovic a couple of tough matches last year, right? Thiem just has had bad luck with draws and by his own words is a rhythm player, needs to play ALOT of matches win or lose to have that confidence. Back in 2018 he had more match wins than Fed or Nadal despite them having better success over all that year
@@bernardocallahan That was some beautiful tennis. You have to accept that he's improving again. It's obviously not over, like what are you even saying.

I think his Laver Cup experience in fall of last year, where he played phenomenally… has helped. Felix has beat all of the top ten once except Medvedev. He has the skill…l also think many players got a shot of adrenalin from Ben Shelton’s totally competitive style and are all being more aggressive. Bravo Felix. keep it up!
I like them both so much. I'd want both to win. Gah! Sucks one had to lose. Thiem has been getting such tough draws. He played so well tho! Hope that gives both if these guys a lot to build on for the season.
Tough draw for both players. Thiem in particular still finding himself after a hellish few years. I'm excited for him though - he's getting closer to finding his tennis. This guy is a giant when he's on form and this matchup showed everyone he's coming.
I adore both players. Dominic is quite unlucky with his wrist injury. Felix has been struggling with form & injury for a while. I hope these two can get back to their former selves soon.
bull! Over the last few years Felix has beat everyone in the top ten, except Medvedev… he is a worthy competitor. Since Yannick Noah, I have been afraid French Speaking players are never as competitive… I thought perhaps Pouille was the guy, but he disappeared. I have always thought the French philosophy was that being too obviously competitive was bad taste.
