One of the most painful retirements on the tour in the 21st century. One of the most unique and exciting players. By far the most stunning down-the-line backhand of all time. I really wish people studied this shot and copied the good, innovative aspects, Dominic really took the shot to unprecedented dimensions that many people still keep saying are impossible with the one-hander (like those amazing open-stance winners). Helped him win 5 out of his last 7 matches with Djokovic. I wish him all the best, there's more to life than tennis.
I hate how injury can completely upend someone’s career. He had so much more to give. He was one of few who could challenge the big 3. He’s not only an incredible player, but one of the sweetest and most popular players on tour ❤❤❤

@@wimowalternative I think it's the forehand that really damaged his wrist. It was also his forehand, his main weapon, that has been lost forever after the wrist injury. His backhand was still fine in 2022 and parts of 2023.
Gonna miss this guy incredible player and super respectful at all times on court. Sucks both Del Potro and Thiem have both had their careers cut short by wrist injuries, two of the greatest shot makers I have ever seen.
Really sad how it ended for Thiem. Guy was my favorite player and really got me back into the sport. These highlights are great reminder of how good he was

The Thieminator was so awesome, his play style made for great tennis, but extracted a massive physical price. He was defintely slam worthy but I knew his body could never deliver more then a couple. His forehand pace was something else. He never fully recovered from his injury. Thanks and best of luck to him in the next stage of life. He has a great attitude so he will do well.
@@MaxiGenferei Wawrinka's H2H with the big 3 is 12 wins and 63 losses. Tsonga's H2H is 16 wins and 39 losses. Del Potro's H2H is 17 wins and 45 losses. Thiem's H2H with the big 3 is 16 wins and 19 losses. He was really the closest thing to the big 3 in his prime after Murray. His peak level was insanely high. His biggest problem was inconsistency, he was losing many early round matches to random players. But at his best, he was basically as good as the big 3.

The only matches that really inflated his H2H were those 2016 matches with Federer when Roger was basically playing on one leg with his injured knee (and playing really poorly). But he was really playing brutal tennis against Djokovic (won 5 out of their last 7 meetings, and even the 2 he lost were very close) and Nadal, and those victories were "legit". His peak level was incredible, some of the best tennis the tour has ever seen.

This reminds me too much of Del Potro who was my favorite. Absolute gentleman and lovable dude. One of the few who could beat the big 3 consistently. Career shortened because of injuries. Only Grand Slam at US Open when it could have been way more if he had stayed healthy. Really sad news, but I wish him nothing but happiness in his life off the court. I literally was in a bad mood at work all day today. I'm gonna miss Dominic. I hope he continues to be influence and continues to be involved in the tennis world in some way, shape, or form.
I've only been in the tennis world for a short time, but I read from Thiem that he had psychological problems, but that he's doing better now. Thanks to him for sharing and for drawing attention to mental health, which is so important and so many struggle. And wow, this backhand, but also the other highlights here! And thanks to TennisTV for compiling his wins in the comment, I didn't know (still don't know which GS he won against who) but he showed Djokovic and the King Nadal a few times as seen in the video. So he used to play at the top and according to the comment was also in the top 10?!
Tennis TV could release another 10 compilations of his equally amazing backhands and it would still be a tiny fraction of the amazing backhands he hit in his career. He could literally, without exaggeration, hit more stunning down-the-line backhands in a single match, even on a bad day, than many players hit in their career. It helped him win 5 out of his last 7 matches with Djokovic, got him to world No. 3. He was the biggest threat to the "big 3" in his prime, nobody else had such amazing stats against them.
what a shame. his injuries surely robbed us of a legendary career, i'm sure of it. his 2018 us open quarterfinal vs nadal is still one of the most epic matches i've ever seen. superhuman stuff; like two titans battling for control of the cosmos.

One of my all-time favorite players, up there with Federer and Agassi. A beautiful mover and ball-striker, with power off both wings. He had many great individual victories. I am glad he is retiring, as he didn't seem to be making any progress with his comeback, but I am also sad I will never see him again at his best.
Thiem deserved to finish his career on a better note. He worked tirelessly to make himself the equal of the big three when they were still winning slams, and close to their prime. Definitely makes the Hall of Fame in my book. His 2020 AO win over Nadal was just unreal

Absolutely heartbreaking. I always thought he would make the comeback and get back to the Top 10, but it just wasn't happening. I am shocked he is retiring before Nadal and Djokovic, I don't think anyone would have guessed that after his 2020 US Open win. Congratulations on an amazing career Thiem. At your best, you could've beat anyone across the net, not many players can say that.
Actually, many people were constantly saying with absolute certainty "He will win many Roland Garros titles after Rafa retires" or, even worse "I will root for him after Rafa retires". They were saying it every year since 2015, but even then it was already clear to many people (including me) that with his taxing game style, he will be either too old to win anything meaningful after Rafa retires, or he may retire even earlier than him. People just always have unrealistic ideas and never learn, and this also included his comeback (constantly saying "He's still young, he has many more years, he will certainly get back to top 10 and win more grand slams etc.", even though it was increasingly clear with each passing month that he's done for good). The moral of the story? Don't wait for your favourite player to retire before you start rooting for a new one. The new one may already be too old by then. Don't think that players will have their best years in them in their thirties. They won't. No, 35 is not the new 25 and all that nonsense that people keep repeating. If you want to enjoy success or anything or anyone in life, now is the best chance. There may not be another one in 5 or 10 years. Don't wait for anything. I remember Dominic saying several years ago he won't play the olympics, it's not so important to him and he's still young and there will be another chance... There wasn't.

One of the few guys, if not the only guy at his peak that can match nadal physically and blow him off the court, even on clay and can also out match Novak.
This just goes to show that no matter how good you are or how much potential that you may have one injury can derail it all. Dominic was one of the dominant players not so long ago and now because of the wrist injury his career is unfortunately coming to an end. I wish Dominic nothing but the best for the rest of his life.

I really thought that Thiem could be the new #1 after the big 3 because he had so much promise! But his injury just upended his career so much. I would love to see him play but only when he feels that he's ready just like how Nadal is right now. He will be sincerely missed!
Alongside Murray, Thiem was one of the rare elites that could consistently threaten and defeat the big 3. Such a shame that wrist injury ended up ending his career prematurely. So so sad. He had so much more to win and achieve before his wrist fell apart in 2021 from all the years of high octane ballstriking. His wrist couldn't keep up with his ability to generate power as well as willpower.
Loved Thiem! His game his overall talent and and his...of course...one handed backhand!! One of the best in tennis history! He should have won more than one slam and when his injury set in and he was out for quite awhile...coming back and not really getting the results he was used to...well the writing was on the wall. Enjoy your retirement Thiem, you will be missed!
This man was sometimes the favorite when it came to meeting the Big 3, even in tournaments where you were almost certain he should have lost (think Federer and Djokovic at London and of course Nadal on clay multiple times). That is an essentially unrivaled achievement. Such an extreme loss for the sport.

Neither was he a part of the original next gen group (Zverev, Rublev etc.). He was somewhere in between. He was unique, in many aspects.

What a pity!An amazing player.Seems that after that 2020 US Open all crambled down for him.Part for the wrist injury,and maybe some mentality issues for finally being able to obtain that title and the relaxation that comes after.If he wouldnt have that injury,he would still be a top 10 player no doubt.
For sure, this is a big loss for pro tennis. Uber talented, terrific guy, very hard worker, great sport, one of the most beautiful backhands ever.
I really thought that Thiem could be the new #1 after the big 3 because he had so much promise! But his injury just upended his career so much. I would love to see him play but only when he feels that he's ready just like how Nadal is right now. He will be sincerely missed!

Alongside Murray, Thiem was one of the rare elites that could consistently threaten and defeat the big 3. Such a shame that wrist injury ended up ending his career prematurely. So so sad. He had so much more to win and achieve before his wrist fell apart in 2021 from all the years of high octane ballstriking. His wrist couldn't keep up with his ability to generate power as well as willpower.
Loved Thiem! His game his overall talent and and his...of course...one handed backhand!! One of the best in tennis history! He should have won more than one slam and when his injury set in and he was out for quite awhile...coming back and not really getting the results he was used to...well the writing was on the wall. Enjoy your retirement Thiem, you will be missed!
It really sucks that he got injured and wasn't able to get back to full fitness! He had some epic matches with Nadal and Djokovic!!
This man was sometimes the favorite when it came to meeting the Big 3, even in tournaments where you were almost certain he should have lost (think Federer and Djokovic at London and of course Nadal on clay multiple times). That is an essentially unrivaled achievement. Such an extreme loss for the sport.
I'm sure gonna miss the shit out of that backhand. A thing of beauty and a joy forever. Bye Domi.
Idky but i think the outcome of his game would be much different untill he reach his retirement date and he would have to re-think about his retirement

The saddest retirement in tennis.. This guy was unbelievable, his H2H with Federer is the proof. The best one handed backhand just after Wawrinka's. A big honour Prince of clay!

@@teasellermodi5897 He was his own generation. He wasn't a part of the lost gen players (Dimitrov, Raonic, Nishikori). He was younger and better, stronger than them. Neither was he a part of the original next gen group (Zverev, Rublev etc.). He was somewhere in between. He was unique, in many aspects.

I hate this! we need more players like Thiem. He was really one of the few I thought could get the big 3 out of the way. We will miss him, tennis will miss him.
