7.5. Outline of a Composition / Composition / English Writing

Ladies and gentlemen, I am Olga, your academic guide. Let’s talk about an outline for your composition.
An outline subdivides the controlling idea or thesis into smaller parts.
Roman and Arabic numerals and letters of the alphabet are generally used to number and order ideas.
On the screen you can see a very typical example of an outline.
The thesis is stated on the top. The composition consists of four parts marked with Roman numerals: Introduction, Main idea 1, Main idea 2, and Conclusion.
Main idea 1 has two sub-ideas, marked with capital English letters A and B.
Sub-idea B has 2 supporting details, marked with Arabic numerals.
Supporting detail 2 contains 2 facts, marked with small English letters a and b.
