Daredevil ('03) VS Daredevil Netflix: One Scene That Shows Why One Worked and the Other Didn't

  • Spider-Man: No Way Home has finally returned Matt Murdock to the MCU. Which made us look back at the original ben Affleck Daredevil film. Yes, it sucks--a lot. But why? What was it that made the Charlie Cox. Netflix show the singing star of Marvel TV, that the 2003 film lacked? We picked one similar scene in each movie that shows us this key difference.

There is a BIG problem in "scale" of super powers. In comics and the first DD movie, DD super power is comparable to Spiderman's. DD jumps off a 40 story building, doing flips on the way down, and just walks away.
But in Netflix version, Cox's DD is a "badass" no doubt. But he is no where close to Spiderman's power or even Affleck DD. He is not the same scale super power.
So now will the real DD please step forward: Cox's DD, Affleck DD, or comic book DD. The MCU's got a problem, if they move forward with Cox's DD as-is.
Oh and for the record, I love Affleck's Batman. But Cox's DD is more entertaining.

Since Matt’s senses are so heightened he would need something like that to find some peace and quiet while trying to sleep. That’s why he puts the epsom salt in the tank before going in. Just a normal kid, who we don't even see again. It wasn't a super short, almost meaningless rescue that took no effort like in a lot of superhero movies. It genuinely showed that despite all he thinks of himself and the violence he does, Matt is still a good person.

Daredevil (the Netflix series) is just unparalleled in it’s dialogue, acting, cast, character development, etc, etc, etc…
What scares me, is when these actors and the characters they portrayed so brilliantly, will be “Dumbed Down” in the MCU.

I hate to say this but I absolutely agree with you. He should never have been introduced in a show like Hawkeye which is very light hearted. I'm not saying that Hawkeye isn't a good show in itself; but to introduce a character like Fisk in it is a really bad idea. The whole point of Fisk as a villain is that he doesn't have to do the dirty work (like participate in hand to hand fights) himself unless absolutely necessary. Where were all his thugs when he went to hunt down Kate Bishop?? Introducing him in such a fashion ironically ruins continuity and undermines all the hard work which we have seen Matt put in in ending Fisk's reign of terror.

You see his full struggle, from getting beaten down earlier to his ensuing fight in the end, and after he's exhausted and fighting literally to his last breath, we see in the end it was to save a life, to be a hero. It's not about being the strongest powerhouse and smashing the bad guy because bad guy is bad. It's about him wanting what's best for this city and keeping people safe. We get to see it a lot in his actions and I love that about Daredevil and his show. We see the end result of his heroism.

Well that is the whole thing isn't it? Movie Daredevil does violence for violence sake, it is the beginning and end of the characters intention.
What sets the Matt Murdoch from the show apart is how violence is really more an end to a means, protecting people, and importantly not meting out justice. Daredevil sure does beat the daylights out of a lot of people, sometimes more than necessary in the moment but only to prevent further violence and abuse. He ultimately realises he cannot alone decide what qualifies as justice and execute it himself. His intent does not begin or end with violence and a self serving thirst for the punishment of others, the intent is always to be a defender.

Because Matt hears, smells and feels EVERYTHING, it makes it difficult to sleep. So he uses a tank like this to shut out the world. Not every version of Daredevil does this but it is our there in canon.

I liked the movie for what it was. A sometimes silly action piece with hints of deeper meaning to the characters being shown because comics are a huge well of source material and I knew when I went into it they would barely scratch the surface. I thought the actors did well with what they were given to work with, even enjoyed Bullseye and Elektra. The relationships weren't bad either when it was just the characters enjoying themselves. Fisk was appropriately menacing, even if he lacked the nuance of later versions. I've seen worse movies and much, much worse performances.
That being said, everything you said was right and I am so glad the show gave these characters the depth they deserved. Charlie Cox is one of the best choices for a character I've ever seen. I can't see Daredevil as anyone else after he played him so perfectly. His physicality was amazing, but his emotional range was the truly impressive part. The story laid out for the show was a lot to portray and the whole cast was fantastic, but without such a great lead it would have fallen apart around him.

In the movie's teenie tiniest defense, the entire point is that he needs to learn to be morally righteous and not dish out punishments like the people he's fighting. Daredevil kills at the beginning because he thinks he has no reason not to. It's only through various events like traumatizing that poor kid and seeing how Elektra was so bloodthirsty that he decides that killing isn't isn't answer. He realizes he's as broken as the judicial system he serves. The film isn't automatically in the wrong for doing this.

Worth mentioning: The “coffin” shown in the film is a sleep deprivation tank. It was a few nods to highlight the character’s sensitivities, pains and quirks along with the folding of bills a particular way, the combination locks and the cabinet full of meds. Also, to speak on the series’s pursuit of a child it would also be worth the consideration of the film’s child encounter. When film Matt goes through his heavy handed routine, he is confronted with a kid that reflects back at him the image of a bully, the monster that took his own father. That scene when he has to question if he WAS the bad guy was pivotal film wise.
On the flip, series Matt isn’t shown having gone through that reflection in the same manner. It’s not until someone else takes his alter ego on and his back-n-forth with F Castle that he questions the limits of his methods.
    Everything else - full agreement.

I’d say the show manages to keep itself grounded in real world physics as well as giving the characters a level of vulnerability and for me it’s the secret sauce that helps make it so good. The movie was a product of the early 00’s superhero boom, the pick of that era was Blade which managed to get so much right. Daredevil the movie was heavy on FX light on plot.

I find your depth and breadth of content so refreshing. It is not just a deep dive into characters, source material, and methods. I think the last point is really the strongest. The Showrunners, (producers, directors, writers, and acting talent) of the movie did not get the characters or their (characters') fans. The movie was a superhero mold formula that missed on all accounts. The Netflix series took true fans and built the characters. Even though some of the acting/actor-talent is sub-par. The fans will imperfect actors that give perfect portrayals of characters grace for a lot. While A-list celebrities doing a part in a superhero nipple costume flop.

Couldn't agree more, this channel truly is a substantial breath of fresh air in the "Geek Culture/Movie, comics and TV" genre of RUclips channels.
Whereas many of the other Channels tend to echo/highlight or repeat the same points/narratives (At times, even come close to plagiarising eachother) when producing their breakdowns of Movies/Episodes, I have noticed umpteen times that Screen Crush will always have/make unique observations, point out aspects or Easter eggs that no other channel has even noticed or thought of.
Case in point, go check out his breakdown of the Matrix resurrections and compare it to the likes of Nerdist or Collider (even Emergency Awesome or New Rockstars too, although I love those guys too) now, even if you don't like the movie, you'll see the stark contrast between them.

This is click bait nonsense that compares two things that really shouldn’t be compared. It’s clearly written by someone that has a strong preference for A over B. Not saying they are wrong in their commentary, but the language and tone when comparing the movie and the series is completely different. You break down the series like it’s an assignment in your cinema appreciation class, then you break down the movie by inserting a bunch of goofy pop culture references.

For one he talks about them not showing DD in the series making the audience feel like him but then complains about it in the movie. The point of them focusing on objects hitting lights and then making everything so dim/shaded is to bring the focus on his powers... Why wouldn't a blind hero take away a sense (sight) and use it as an advantage? It makes the scene in the show look dumb and more unrealistic for him to charge straight in with no kind of plan to speak of.

The movie was a pure "revenge" story. Revenge for not being convicted. Revenge for killing his hottie. Revenge for killing his dad. It didn't have a "plot", it just had a sequence. A "hero" should overcome something. There was nothing for Daredevil to overcome. The "low" for him to come back from was a 3rd party death. Bullseye kills Elektra. Not something that happens to the hero. He doesn't even have a hard time dealing with it.

I'm not going to say the movie is better than the show because obviously it isn't, but despite it's flaws it has many things in it's favor you didn't want to see.
The long leaps and falls were done trying to emulate the comics. Yes, he could wait outside the bar for Quesada but Matt clearly was angry and wanted to hit people ( something the show's version also does).
After the bar scene we see Matt spiting a molar out and how scarred his body is. The drops of water thing allows him "see" how people look while the rest of the time he can only locate everyone's position ( wich isn't necessary against Kingpin), and the murder of Quesada AND Matt saying "i'm not the bad guy" is to show character development. At the start he is willing to kill without a second thought, then he is kicking the crap out of one of Kingpin's minions until his child ask DD to stop, so Matt realize this guy was just like his own dad, and in the end he chooses not to kill Fisk even when he killed the two people Matt have loved the most, letting him going to jail.
It's a movie with many flaws, but not as many as people tend to believe, and it's mostly a product of it's time.

This is cool, but for me a lot of the problems of the "old" Daredevil movie get fixed in the directors cut. It is not a perfekt version, but it makes it way better. The directors cut had nearly no romantic subplot, but a whole side story inside the court room. It showed a lot more of DD's powers in actions at low price of less "action hero love scenes with unfitting music". There were a few things they got really right in that version. But I am with you, the Netflix version is superior. IMHO the biggest problem is not giving the audience a *consistent* picture of DD, although a few of these problems are remedied in the directors cut, but sadly not all. The really crazy thing is, that some scenes are out of order in the theatrical release, no wonder the movie was so strange....
PS: The weird coffin thing is probably a sensory deprivation tank, used to isolate him from the sounds of his surroundings. I think they mentioned it in the Netflix version as well, but DD can hear too good for his own good. I have no idea if nonfictional blind people have similar problems with relaxing, but it does mesh well with his weakness against loud noises.

The prison scene is S3 is one take... with planned cuts if needed but they didn't need them. They even used some of the "cutaway" footage later, when Wilson is watching the scene on camera, since it was unneeded for the "one cut" scene they managed to pull off.
