It's really hard to find a motivation to do anything these times... Your videos always give me that motivation to do something! Thank you.
I haven’t finished watching the video yet, but I fully agree 👌🏼
True that.
Same tho. Watching his videos rly motivates me to do my Geography homework that I should've rly been doing instead of watching his videos 😭
Thank you for the content. I did not realize you enjoyed cartology as much as I do.

Loved your answer about favorite border. I would have answered NepalChina as well. I've crossed it a few times on climbing expeditions to Everest coming from Kathmandu. Super crazy. We have 40+ tons of gear and supplies on a bus on the Nepal side. We all have to get off the bus, along with all the 40 tons of gear/supplies. The gear then has to be carried across the border (by porters) which is a tiny bridge connecting two sides of a narrow valley, get checked by Chinese officials (who literally only search for things that are pro-Tibetan, so they can confiscate it), then over to the Chinese side and put on a Chinese bus so we can continue on to EBC. We had to hide our SD cards in our socks so they wouldn't go through our pictures to look for anything Buddhist or Tibetan-related.
Nelson Dellis crazy
did you visit india or not?
This man is literally what I dream to be.
Such an inspiration for me. A knowledgeable persona! 🙏🏻
The vibe is just cool
The question is - "Why are you even wearing shoes inside???" I've only seen people in America do this, I will never understand it... Maybe you should do a video on it? :)
I have a same question! :)
It’s a European, American thing usually a white thing not to be racist
Johnny: Maybe I should make a How Europe stole Africa video.

Ya how is that a maybe lmao it's one of the most obvious idea lmao
Asian here: left handed chopsticks? what?
Yeah, what? Another Asian here, chopsticks are literally 2 short sticks. They’re ambidextrous
super confused as well
I bet he paid extra for them lol!!
Lol i think he means the children's practice chopsticks? those ones are left and right handed
Ahhh. You beat me to it
The way you interact with the viewers makes it feel engaging. Like friends talking and catching up over coffee. Great video.
As a Nigerian, I would absolutely love a "how Europe stole Africa" video!
When you can travel again, I really recommend the Jura hills on the swiss/french border. Beautiful quiet landscape and lots of interessting (border) places!
I found Ezra Klein's "Work as Identity, Burnout as Lifestyle" podcast episode super enlightening in that not doing enough/ever pushing productivity feeling. Really recommend it!
Your truly inspiring and very motivating!
Ever since I found your video on Vox, I became a fan of yours and your family. You have tough me a lot and guided me to really keep on going and once again made me believe that anything is possible , you just have to put your time and effort into something that you want to do!

I enjoy your videos and at the same time I wind up learning life lessons, history and geography. Besides that I see my own family in you guys and it makes me actually kind of nostalgic of the times I used to travel. I am so glad I found your channel. I don't think my quarantine would have been the same without it. Thanks for making all these amazing videos!
I love Johnny and IZ’s videos. I think it’s my love of maps, history, and travel 💕
How Europe stole Africa sounds more like a series than a video
yeah a series would be cool i guess, part 1 about age of colonisation and trade and then parts about the scramble for africa and finally the berlin conference
At least a 20-part series

As someone who is trilingual, I cannot agree more with your language learning analogy.
How to describe Johnny in three sentances:
1. Loves maps
2. Loves breakfast
3. Loves Switzerland
Hates shampoo
I'm genuinely so glad to find someone on youtube that has the same lowkey obsession with maps/old maps that I harbor as well, it's refreshing to see.
Your videos are life saving in these tough times ❤️
"Educated" was a PHENOMENAL look into the extremes of belief that people can have, especially coming from a Mormon background as well. 0_o
Ok I never realized chopsticks were left or right handed? Confused 🤷♂️
I think he talked about the practice chopsticks for kids. There’s a left-handed version of it.
Nah it's still the same two sticks, but with different hands you'd need to know where to find the fulcrum. I guess that's what chopsticks are all about
There are children chopsticks which have finger holders.
I feel that what I'm doing is not enough. and you're one of the inspiring people I look up to... because you're doing a lot, and your videos are really good. and inspirational.
Your mapping style, the way you touch on things with your **EpIc** maps is what I really want to emulate, for my own project.
Nice video. Also Looking forward to seeing the Stolen Africa video. And watching people be surprised by countries like Belgium.

3:38 There is this 1967 book called "Mustang: A Lost Tibetan Kingdom" by a French guy Michel Peissel
, and it's about how he hanged around this exact Lo Manthang, and it's 1960s so it still was a totally pre-modern feudal kingdom with a literal local king. He left there quite a detailed description of what this place looked like back than, local customs, lifestile, society, religion etc. It's pretty awesome, I totally recommend it to anybody interested in this region.
Put everything you know about journalism, cinematography, editing on bright trip eventually

Tip from someone who learned English at 17 to learn a new language: find a show that you like in the language you want to learn and turn on the subtitles in english. After a while your brain will know what sound goes with what word. After a while, you should turn on the subtitles in the language you're learning and start making the association of the written word and the sound that goes with it. Also, read children's books in that language. Finally, practice writing in said language. It took me a good year to start making sense of English and a full decade to be fully fluent, so don't expect to be an expert overnight.
i learn three languages, and sadly my English is better than my national language (falling type of bad) maybe,I should try what you suggest.
@@brandonchan4537 no I totally relate. My English is now better than my Spanish lol. I guess the saying "use or lose it" bears some truth.

How Turkey stole Northern Cyprus pleaseeeeeee
Thats be an amazing borders video! Went to Cyprus and did a trip into the north was a strange one
I think it’s more about how greece and Cyprus’ plan for reunification in the 1960s was interrupted by turkey.
How Greece stole Southern Cyprus
Are you serious? More like; How Greeks suppressed Turkish minority cypriots living in Cyprus *until Turkey made it safe for them*
i am the first one i should get a heart for this @johnny Harris
Watching his videos always ignites my interest in geography.
Hey, Johnny! 500k. Congrats!!
this is a formal request for Johnny to do the Africa-Europe series.
read Walter Rodney - “How Europe Underdeveloped Africa”
Actually it's been long enough for them to get back on their feet if they wanted to. Just my opnion.
Adam Braithwaite read Jason Hickel - “The Divide” and watch “Stealing Africa” by Global Voices on RUclips. Neo-colonialism is rampant on the continent of Africa today.
Nick Arjomand colonialism happened through literal warfare. Look up the Ethiopia-Italy war for example. And colonialism never stopped! Today Africa is under neo-colonialism through the IMF, World Bank, WTO. Why do you think AFRICOM exists? Look up the Egyptian economist Samir Amin, who has written about neo-colonialism in-depth.
Just keep in mind that people like Jason Hickel have their own biases. He has a brand that is based on certain themes, and one can say his worldview is in a way the opposite of someone like Steven Pinker.
In reality, these characters all bring something to the table and valid arguments in their own sense. They get into their own bubbles and overly academic in their arguments. An example of this would be Jason Hickel's statements "Africa doesn't need aid, it needs justice". It's catchy, it gets retweets, etc. But it really doesn't say anything, particularly since much aid is delivered as a form of justice...although some people would still call the implementation of universal health care in conflict zones as "neo-colonialism".
Same with discussion that you see online about why some places are underdeveloped and the role colonialism played in them. Usually, these discussions are also not nuanced and one-sided, either downplaying or over-emphasizing the role of colonialism.
Another great example of how these discussions usually go in academia is the one that you "flying fisher" are having with "nick arjomand" in this thread. You both apparently live in two different realities in which cause and effect are absolute and easily identified, only matching your opinions.
GlobalFoodAction hi, thank you for your reply. Have you read Health Poverty Action’s research report entitled “Honest Accounts: The true story of Africa’s billion dollar losses” ? In this research report, they talk about how every year $134 billion dollars in ‘aid’ is given to African countries, while $192 billion is stolen in the form of never-ending foreign debts (which have already been paid several times over), profits by foreign corporations, tax havens, etc.
When Jason Hickel says “Africa doesn’t need aid, it needs justice,” he means that if NGO’s were to attempt to address the *underlying causes* of Africa’s poverty (its continual robbery of $192 billion every year by foreign, predominantly Western companies), there could be much more permanent change. He makes this point very clearly in “The Divide” and directly draws upon the work of scholars such as Walter Rodney, Utsa Patnaik and Samir Amin.
Also check out the organization Black Alliance for Peace. They just held an amazing conference on RUclips about AFRICOM and US military presence on the continent. African leaders have been assassinated and entire countries have been drone bombed for refusing to pay foreign debt and attempting to build an economy that’s independent from global capitalism and the US currency. Look up what happened to Thomas Sankara, Patrice Lumumba, Kwame Nkrumah, etc.
For a look at debt colonialism in Caribbean countries, see the documentary “Life and Debt” about Jamaica, and read Dr. Paul Farmer’s work on Haiti. Haiti’s debt today was imposed upon by France as a ‘repayment’ for France’s loss of profits due to the abolition of slavery! Paul Farmer talks about this in “Pathologies of Power.”
You made it to 500K, congrats!
You are such a great motivator. I have been bi ge watching through your channel and absoluty loving the content.
