    I got diagnosed as a fishing freak about 6 months ago, and I'm still living with it. My brother had a mild case before me and now it has only increased. But now, my dad is gathering up fishing gear..

    The Clouser Minnow (the chartruce and white fly with the weighted eyes) was developed by Bob Clouser on the Susquehanna River for smallmouth. It's become the most versatile streamer ever, used for many, many species, freshwater and salt.
    The Susquehanna is an incredible fishery, very different from most places you find smallmouth. Wide, shallow series of shale ledges provide thousands and thousands of places for fish to hold. It really is one of the best fisheries in the East. Anyone that tells you the population is in decline hasn't been out on the water. 🤣

    Man you killed it on the fly rod! I don't fly fish at all, but I think I m gonna start! Awesome job!!🎣🎣👊🏻👊🏻😎

      I hope you do start, we need more people to get into it. Not many fly shops left sadly. Takes a while to get used to but once you do and hook up on a big one it is hard to go back to spinning tackle.

      Please do. Once you catch a big one you'll be hooked. It's a learning experience, but well worth it. There's nothing like catching a 3 or 4 lb bass on a fly rod.

    I've got a few fly tips. If you want to strip faster, put the rod under your casting arm and strip with both hands, set the hook with a jerk. Casting backwards is normal, especially when it's windy. You could use a stripping basket to catch your line so it doesn't get tangled. Thought you did really well. That sinking fly is a clouser minnow, a legend among flies.

    I'm a new sub - I found you thru Matt Carriker and really enjoy your channel. I cannot fish anymore, but loved to as a child. I had a spine/spinal cord injury about 7 years ago so am SOL as far as fishing goes, but your videos sure make me smile. I wish you all the very best with Willis and hope that you, your family, friends and fellow Americans are safe during Hurricane Harvey. You'll all be in my thoughts and prayers. I have a brother in Houston that I'm thinking about as far as flooding, etc. goes. Keep fishing, keep recording and keep smiling!

    Lost my Dad a few years ago but he loved to fly fish. He grew up on the farm in the country and caught his early fish on a real cane pole with a worm that he had dug himself. His brother built an 8 acre farm pond on the place and I can say that he caught more than 80% of his fish there on the farm. It was always a big deal for him to have some crickets for his farm pond fish.

    Just a tip for stripping poppers... Keep your rod tips in the water. It will help pull the popper down and you get way more action out of the fly. It didn't seem like you were having any trouble catching fish, but it may help when the bass are not blowing up all over the place.

    Awesome your getting into fly fishing. Been doing it since I was a little kid. When your stripping line do it in shorter but faster pulls on the line without moving your rod. Then when you set the hook use your line more then the rod. Strip the line hard and outta your finger on the rod instead of holding on. Takes practice but much more hooks up and less likely to break off flies.

  • @devonbachmaier991
    @devonbachmaier991 7 лет назад

    Hey LFG just wanted to let you know that the yellow and white shad fly you were using is called a clouser. It is an extremely popular streamer in both salt and fresh. Awesome job on the bass and the best way to get better at fly fishing is time on the water. Some other very effective but common streamer/subsurface flies are wooly buggers and decievers. Then deceiver was invented by the great Lefty Kreh for fishing smallmouth and is now anpupolar fly in the salt as well. Tight lines. My thought and prayers are with you.

    When your stripping keep your rod tip super low, that way you can set the hook and it gives much better action to the fly

  • @thisajim
    @thisajim 7 лет назад +1

    Hey LFG, love to see some good fly action! When you're stripping, try to keep that rod tip pointed towards the water. Also, when you tie on a clouser minnow, tie a loop knot, you'll get better action out of the fly that way. Keep up the good work1

    Lake fork guy. Morning. I noticed your reel was backwards for how it was spooled and for casting right handed. If you do turn it around you can reel left handed and the line will sit better in the rod making it a little easier to handle and cast with less bundles of line beneath your feet. Hope this makes an enjoyable experience a little smoother.

    Try a loop knot on those streamer flies, it allows them to get better action when you strip then pause your fly line. It will have the similar action of a jerk bait darting side to side. Tight lines and keep the great videos coming!

    when stripping flies you can hold your rod tip barely over the water and it doesnt want to pull your fly out of the water. when fishing streamers if you look into a sink tip fly line it helps to keep it down. on a foating line you need to use a 7+ foot leader for the fly to get down enough. tight lines!

    If you are going to be throwing big sub surfaces like that clouser minnow and even big wind resistant bass bugs, a 7-8 weight is a good option, there are even companies that make shorter 9-10 weight rods specifically for bass fishing and actually horsing them out of cover. The White River Fly Shop Heat series at Bass Pro are really good and look cool too. Mojo Bass also makes a fly rod series

    I would recommend a 9 foot 6 weight for what you like to do. A 7 weight might be better if you prefer to fish more for bass, but a 6 weight might suit your needs better. As for line, an OPST Commando head with Lazar Running Line and the appropriate tips will definitely be more than sufficient to catch bass 3 pounds and under as well as those little whities you love to catch so much.

    You need to detach that reel and rotate 180. Reel handle on the left and line coming off the bottom of the reel. The clip of your saltwater hook up, that rig was set up properly.
