So stoked that you and Rob fished there! I was at both of your spots last Saturday. Caught 6-8 largies on Senkos for the most part. 2 lbs. was the largest. You may want to try some black Wooly Buggers, and strip them back as if they're on a baitcaster - keep plenty of line at your feet for slack, and use the rod guides as your drag; the more parallel your rod, the less the drag. Save the vertical rod for when you need maximum drag. You're an angler... you'll get it by the next time you go fishing. I've caught many decent Bass on that river on a fly rod with Wooly Buggers. Bless your heart with that long walk back to the truck (smh)! Praying for you every day, Justin!

Enjoying the slower pace, LFG. It's not so "in your face" as traditional largemouth fishing. I definitely like seeing a normal dude take on fly fishing, without being so concerned they're doing every little thing "right". Keep it up!
If you catch a spring time bluegill when the water is super cold you have to do a catch and cook. They taste amazing. We like them more than yellow perch!

Those were some pretty healthy blue gills. Even with the rain, a good day to be out.
If you are fishing current, try to strip fly upstream. Fish are used to seeing fish swimming away from them and it could scare them. If you do fish it downstream just keep the line tight enough for the fly to hover a couple inches off bottom or bounce it off bottom to get an ambushing fish. Bluegill don't care for the most part but it goes along way for bass and trout

When fly fishing with wet flies, pointing your rod tip down closer to the water will help you on the hook set.
Its actually funny you talk about seeing that fish. Last year my buddy and I went deer hunting in Ohio(we live in PA). We go out hunting that morning, don't see anything. We decide to head back to the truck, and go eat lunch. So we literally just unloaded our guns, put them in the cases, and zipped them up when my buddy looks at me and says"are you kidding me!" sure enough, a huge buck, I'd say a solid 10 if not more, standing broadside about 40 yards from us.

Y'all up in north central texas are lucky! Down here in southeast texas, it's real hard to find a bayou that isn't muddied up, and we don't have as many trees here to hold down the soil. Great vid!

My grandfather taught me how to fly fish when I was a kid using popping bugs just like that. Same color, everything. The chartreuse ones and we also used white ones too. Black ones worked too but it seemed like the white and yellow worked the best.
LFG, you and Rob should try out Tenkara fishing. Tenkara rods are telescoping for easy backpacking. Tenkara is fly fishing without the reel, just the pole, line, and fly... simple!
oh those biolites are freakin cool. That's the biolite camp stove. I just got one. I have had a biolite base camp stove for some time and I use that instead of my charcoal grill. It cooks burgers and steaks like no tomorrow man. Plus everytime you buy one they put money towards charity focused on providing safe cooking stoves to third world countries. It decreases diseases caused by smoke inhalation. Great company.

Here's a quick tip for when your fly casting try and keep you elbow in close to your body like you are holding a magazine between arm and your body
You should look into a tenkara rod for these backpacking trips. So much lighter and takes up so much less room in your pack.

Seems like a great day fish or not. I'm in Washington state and salmon haven't started to run yet in the rivers by me but last two months I have gone out to fish a little, keep up the motions and all. Haven't caught nearly anything but getting out on the river that's most of the fun. Also never caught a bass for a fresh sniff.

If you're going to be Wade fishing.. definitely get a good vest with a lanyard for your Nippers and pliers. It will save you a lot of time when retying and stuff. You don't want to have to walk back to the bank every time you need to try a different presentation
