    Thanks for the shout out. I've read that some dealers pay more for coins in OGP rather than slabbed. Part of the appeal of OGP is that the coins are untouched and uncertainty of whether they'll grade 69 or 70. It's cool that you compared a proof Merc dime to the proof Pd Eagle.

      Hahaha. You could have fast forwarded that bagged up 63 Morgan I thought was a 64 LOL. I wish I had unlimited time to make videos. When the computer doesn't crash, and I don't forget editing commands it's pretty fun. That 38 set turned out to be a lot worse than I thought. Hairlines on the semi cam half, and lots of stress ridges on the quarter killed me. Oh well it's all good, I'll pass them on down the ebay road to someone who will enjoy them. Stay warm up there buddy.

    Excellent video all around.
    I really like that you go into the periodic chart and pay tribute to master sculptor A. Weinman (incidentally, his son, Robert, is also a sculptor of very high caliber and R. Weinman's designs can be seen on a number of different medals.
    What a remarkable story you have with the ordering of your 2018 proof Palladium Eagle....I have heard many stories of people trying to place their order at 12 noon and not being successful.
    I do think the coin is one of the best designed and quality coins ever minted by the US Mint.
    I also like your 1938 proof coins

    • @Dr.G

      Hey, thanks a lot for the great comment. I did read something regarding Weinman's son. I'll look more into it. And I'll definitely keep my Palladium Eagle mainly because of the story behind it's purchase and now, it even has a video about it. :) Thanks again, I really appreciate the kind words. It does takes me a lot of work to get these out.

    An excellent video indeed! I've been waiting for another results video! I get to live vicariously through these and get some right and others not so much. Where to start, great story on the Palladium and it does look incredible for a modern piece. I knew about it, thought about it, and decided not to. However, seeing more and more of these videos I am kind of regretting not getting one for the personal collection. That walking Proof half is beyond amazing! Beautiful design and contrast. I guessed the Morgan grade and PL. I've seen them look as such and go for higher and also look similar and go for 63's. I'm guessing they didn't like the small scratch on the obverse at the 3 o'clock and chatter marks on her cheek. Nonetheless an still an excellent coin. Thanks for sharing as always!

    • @Dr.G
      @Dr.G  5 лет назад +1

      Thanks my man. Yeah, That Palladium is a winner. It almost didn't happen for me. I also love the walker, too bad they didn't. LOL. The Morgan was graded correctly after I looked closely. The reverse doesn't have much influence. I have others in better shape I haven't looked at yet, but will show in upcoming vids. I wish I could get them made faster. I'll see what I can do. :)

      Dr. G do you buy most of your coins raw then send for grading?

    • @Dr.G
      @Dr.G  5 лет назад +2

      I actually have bought old collections that were formed before the grading craze. And now maybe 75% of the coins I buy are slabbed already so I don’t show those much. I plan on doing that when I’m finished opening the graded coins I have still in the box from PCGS. I’m so slow. I don’t want to just open them and not enjoy the experience without a little history to go along with it. It’s a lot more fun that way. But of course slows things down.

    I in no way, shape, or form know how to grade coins, but I agree that the Morgan, Half Dollar, and Quarter should have all received a better grade. Thanks Dave, I really like that Walker. It's too bad the grade is low. You really have to look close. I didn't think it was going to hurt the grade that much, as I have seen coins in slabs with monster hairlines still getting high proof grades. I also think it was too bright. The grading companies are not liking shiny coins nowadays, they are afraid of cleaning. Dark, dark coins are getting high grades now. Who knows, maybe in 30 years bright white will be back in fashion. I guess it's a bit of a crap shoot. Thanks for watching and commenting my friend.

    Hi Dr. G. Congrats on your spectacular Palladium Eagle graded at PF70. How lucky you were that you were able to purchase the coin in the extremely isolated location with very limited resources at the right time. That is fantastic.
    Thanks for all your educational material on both Platinum, Palladium, and the history of the design. I learn a lot each time. In return, I would like to share one extra piece of info for both Platinum and Palladium from the chemistry point of view. The respective boiling and melting point for platinum at ~3825 deg C and ~1768.4 deg C are higher than Palladium at ~2963 deg C and ~1554.9 deg C. Its higher values over Pd is due to two factors : 1) The better packing efficiency of Pt in terms of its higher density than Pd and 2) Based on their electron configurations, Pt has 1 valence electron in the outer shell (6s) while Pd does not have any valence electrons in its outer shell (5s). Thus, the valence electron of Pt are delocalized to form stronger metallic bond than Pd.
    Now you know which one you should melt first if you do need to use the metal. lol Thanks for sharing your great video.

    • @Dr.G
      @Dr.G  5 лет назад +1

    Some older minted coins just never rate 70s. Those often never got above a 64.

    It's hard to get higher than MS-63 on those Morgan CC's ...... That proof 38 quarter looked like the the end of the run for the dies.... Lot's of flow lines with a weaker strike than normal......
    Plus Tard Mon Ami ...

    • @Dr.G
      @Dr.G  5 лет назад +1

      You're absolutely right my friend. It's interesting for me to look at the finished video now. The Morgan is obviously a 63 but at the time I was seeing something else. I think the graders must have days like that.. LOL It was common for the early Washington quarters to be weak, especially on the reverse. There just wasn't a lot of relief to begin with unfortunately. And you are sure right about the flow lines, (stress ridges/radial abrasions), whatever you prefer to call them. That die was definitely on its last leg. Really poor for a proof coin. I've noticed that the grading companies completely disregard the quality of the die when they grade coins. Some horribly made coins can get very high grades as long as they have clean fields or some nice toning. I really disagree with those grades. Thanks a lot for all your comments. I appreciate it.

    Congratulations on getting the PR70 palladium coin. I guessed PR66 for the 1938 Dime, but I was way off on the '38 quarter. PR63! Somebody had a bad day. I hit the 64 on the half due to the hairlines. 65 on the penny. Wear on the 1919 dime could be weakish strike. Guessed 63 on the Morgan due to bag abrasions on the obverse. Fun! and thanks.

    • @Dr.G
      @Dr.G  5 лет назад

      Man you’re right on buddy. I agree with you on all accounts. The half has hairlines that are distracting on an otherwise beautiful semi cameo coin. As much as I want to ignore the hairlines they’re still there. Lol. The grade is correct. I see many proof coins with high grades covered with hairlines that make me cringe. So I can’t change that criticism because it happens to be my coin. :).
      The quarter does look like the die was about to be pulled for repolishing. Lots of stress ridges, but again the graders usually don’t lower for that. I’ll look for a better one. The Morgan I just had a brain fade. LOL. That is obviously a 63. It’s been a while since I have looked at one and the reverse grabbed al my attention. Morgan dollars are graded almost 100% on the condition of the obverse (which has lots of bag marks on this coin). But I was in Lala land hahahah. My mistakes are visible to everyone, but that’s part of the fun of RUclips. :). I’ll look back years later and laugh.
      Grading coins for me is a lot like my golf game. One day I’ll shoot two over par and the next day I won’t be able to find the fairway hahahah. I always enjoy your comments, thanks again buddy.

      @@chrisrock4428 Can you name another modern US example where this happened? Every example I can think of started out by massively increasing the price as initial demand and frenzy over the coin, then a year later was SIGNIFICANTLY off its highs. See: All Reverse Proofs, Gold Commem Walker, SLQ, and Dime, Liberty $100 metals from 2016 and 2017, ....the list goes on. I bet these coins sell for near their melt value within 12 months....but would be nice to be wrong. Using classic designs is a winning strategy for the US mint and I hope the continue.

      No, I was one of the ones that had it in my shopping cart but was prevented from paying for it. I'm not a silver eagle collector but for 70 bucks I figured I'd try and get one for the collection. If you look at the price history of other very high priced silver eagles over the last few years it's amazing to see how much the price falls. I feel bad for the true ASE collectors though; most of them don't have deep pockets and enjoy collecting these because it's something new and affordable. The criminal dealers and flippers are brutal. They don't care who they rob. They will steal from the rich as well as the poor. Very sad. I hope congress approves another striking so that more of these coins will get into the true collectors hands. The greed in this hobby is sickening... and embarrassing.
