Thanks for talking us on the ride. ....Funny, I just realized that I'd watched and commented some 4 years ago. And yet I loved watching it again. Peace out.
By far and away one of the best gold mining videos I've seen. Love the fact that you show the journey and how rugged everything still is up there. I only wish you had ended it showing yourself holding a giant salmon or something from that lake at the end of it. Kudos to you for living your dream!

Thanks Juan. I too, love the process of separating the gold. I eventually want to get into refining gold and silver. I think it would be fun to do assay work and get some super pure gold. Thanks again my friend.
A video like this makes me realize why it's so hard to find happiness in modern day society. We, mankind, were meant to be out in the wild, blazing new trails, rediscovering old ones, and witnessing first hand the beauty of our earth. Sure does make me think about the blight that every day life puts on our surroundings. That's it! I've talked myself into it! I don't mind being the Bobcat operating rookie and working 12 hours a day until the time for work is done. Dr. G, where does one sign up for such an adventure as this and what is the upfront cost?
Well said Greg. Men are designed to conquer, build, and discover. Modern society is a slow kill. It's rare today for a man to realize that. Your life will be over before you know it, so don't waste a day. If you follow the pack you'll end up being depressed looking at a cell phone all day long. Make plans to get out there and do it. Check with the Canadians as far a working in that country. Also, maybe Alaska has some mining opportunities. My own claims are not ready for mining yet, but I'm sure you can find something if you do the research. Good luck bud, and thanks for the great comment.👍👍
The wisest thing that should be on everyone’s mind currently should be to invest in different streams of income that doesn't depend on the government. This video is a gold mine!!!!! Full of information about how it really goes down not all that drama soap opera overly acted crap on TV (we will not say names here, but you know already). Thanks Dr. G for providing the the real deal Holyfield. That little lady handling that water canon at 8:45 is SUPER COOL!!!
Thanks Huy, that little lady is the ideal miner wife. She puts on overalls during the day and can operate any piece of equipment you ask of her, and if she quits a little early she can head back to camp and cook a gourmet meal for you when you knock off for the day. And I can personally testify to her great cooking. :) A fantastic lady. Thanks for the comment.
It's actually more environmentally friendly than using a bulldozer or excavator because it uses much less diesel and you don't have to build heavy load roads. With conventional mining you have to use giant dump trucks to move thousands of yards of dirt overland. When using a monitor all the dirt flows down a 4 foot wide stream to a predetermined settling pond where the dirt, water, and mud is allowed to settle and separate. The clean water then flows back to the river. In the old days it wasn't that the monitors were tearing up the ground, "even heavy equipment back then could tear up the ground", it was the uncontrolled flowing of dirt back into the main rivers that caused all the damage, and eventually led to it's temporary ban (most notably in California). They used no settling ponds then and millions of yards of dirt was allowed to clog up major rivers causing massive flooding. If used properly, monitoring is a great way to concentrate the dirt. But you have to be on a claim that is sloped to take advantage of "hydraulic mining". Thanks for the comment.
@@Dr.G is it realistic if i go up to dawson and pan gold with just a pan or do you need heavy machinery ? is it possible for me to go to dawson and pan and would i find any gold to change my life ?
Indeed, certainly INDEED, GREAT POINT MY FRIEND, GREAT POINT! Ilove the North woods, starting at Santa Rosa all the way to way up Alaska/Canada. I miss it so much. John from Noblesville
Yeah, Pete. I look forward to crossing that border every year. Once I'm in Canada the real trip begins. 20 minutes past the boarder is Hope BC (where they filmed Rambo). The clime up the Fraser river, and canyon, from there is just incredible. Everyone should see that at least once in their life. Thanks for the comment. :)
I wish I could but my folks are here and not doing so good and my daughter is still in school plus work needs me. I've finally got a job that i can say I love. Did a complete job change 7yrs ago and havent hated going to work one single day of it. But I really do need to go see something other than the Sonoran Desert. All that water. I imagine someone like me could make money up there. I fix machines. I was an electrician for 30yrs and just fell into the job ive got. They keep telling me they are gonna force me to take vacation. I'm kind of a workaholic I guess.
I have lived and worked in both Whitehorse and Dawson before and think about it all the time, it's as good as it looks and even better when your there, Vancouver Island is beautiful too, but I find myself going back north as much as possible, if you can go, go. remember summer time it's 24hrs of day light so you really get your moneys worth lol.
I remember traveling through that region in the 1980's what incredible sights, vastness, and huge bears! It sure looked like good gold country. But i had other destinations in mind.... All the way to Alaska boys! Great video. Nice clean up.
Lots going on! Equipment galore! Wasn't expecting that 😆 had a tough time watching the tv show as well...too much fake ass drama and bullshit 😆 Dr G the rest of the year must be about as close to torture as it could possibly be!
People are always criticizing me for not just flying up there and saving "all that time" LOL. The ride up and back is just amazing. Peace and beauty.... You said it.......
Loved the sights, commentary and humour. I'm another of the few Kiwi's to comment who was also surprised at seeing a Kiwi in your video. Nice job making the video, keep up the good work!
@@Dr.G i'M not sure the USA Constitution opens up with that quote but right after that............you HEAD TO CANADA???? wHAT'S that ALL about/? btw I'm already in Canada.
Well Dwight this video is about mining gold, and before the turn of the century people were still using gold and silver as money. In fact the U.S. constitution used to insist that gold and silver was the only form of money allowed. That caused a lot of Americans to rush to different parts of the world to get it, including Canada... Now we just use tokens for money. History is pretty interesting eh Bud.
I always wonder how much gold is lost when you use such a huge machine. Any very large nuggets seems to inevitably be lost with all the "waste gravel" so that you only get smaller nuggets. And it seems any fine dust will be washed away. I know these machines are supposed to trap the fine gold, but I don't believe they get nearly enough of it. Some of the smaller gold panners and collectors I've seen would LOVE to just have your runoff.
Ha, well, that's what a lot of people are doing with old timers dredge tailings. I guess every generation of miners leaves a little for the next. It's all relative. Thanks for the comment Christopher.
@@Dr.G How much did you pay for the trommel plant from New Zealand ? I watched trommels working in the Grey River in NZ 40 years ago when i was a kid but i build better ones myself now while based in Australia , I could build one that will recover gold down to 200 micron with at least 97 % capture rate depending how much clay you have in your gravels , You know in some areas the sub 50 micron gold and is the 30 % that you lose....
Sometimes I come back and watch this video again because it’s so cool! I just got into gold prospecting (mostly nugget shooting). I got a good gold detector and I’m hooked. I moved to New Mexico and it’s a great way to spend time in the mountains and the desert. I would love to go to the Yukon and try to find some nuggets!
Hahaah, no not YS. The metal detector is cool. So many people have found big nuggets with those. Good luck out there and I hope you get a nice one and make a vid showing it. 👍👍
What a cool experience to see! Thanks for sharing. Even after seeing it so long after you came out with the video, randomly got a recommended and I'm glad! Thank you.
I'm headed to southern Yukon with a hope of finding a speck of flour gold or two, just over the BC Border coming from Skagway AK. Do you know anything about southern Yukon and if it's there's any gold in that area? I'm headed there regardless to find a geocache (to knock Yukon off my list) but wanted to know if I should bring my Pan as well. THanks subbed too.
Sounds like fun. I am unfamiliar with the gold deposits in that area, but why not have a look just for fun. The road goes into the Yukon for a short time and then back into BC for a while before heading up into the Yukon. I wonder where the Cache is. Have a great time.
You drove right past my door in Vanderhoof. I am about a hundred yards from the Give er a Yank Truck. it would have been great to meet ya ! I drove heavy truck up and down your whole track so I know it well.I haven't seen a sample pan that looked like that in ages. Good to see you have a nice camp to return to. Those are long days you put in my friend. If your looking for a shower and a bed on the way home, give me a holler and poss I can pour some bars for ya. Take care and have a great season fella !
I'll be giving you a holler Dean, I'm planning on heading your way in a few weeks. I have your number buddy and will be phoning you about a week in advance. Looking forward :)
Hi Johnny. Neat. That is beautiful country. Fortunately this year they have seen little for fires. We have a huge one 70,000 ha going between Ft. Fraser and Ft St James. We have been smoked in for 6 weeks now and not a drop of rain either. The Hoof is ok as our farmlands are a good fire break. Where are you now ?
Thank you, that little film was a complete revelation to me :) - I'm so glad that people are doing this, and more importantly, having so much fun doing it - I'm envious! - The UK hasn't got anywhere near that concentration of gold and what there is, is so closely guarded you just can't get to it - not on an ordinary Joe's wage anyway... I know that those TV series are 'dramatised' to pull the audiences, and the scripts drive me batshit crazy to the point where I can't watch them any more, despite the cool stuff they're doing, but I had no idea that people were just 'getting on with it' - so, well done :) and please, keep showing us more of that beautiful terrain.
Hahaha, thanks my friend. I'm not sure if I mentioned it before, but I pulled some of the wreckage of a crashed P-38 from out of the bush up there. Pretty cool. BTW, Oshkosh was great this year, but not one P-38 :(

Nice of you to share this info. I been up there with pans fora while. The average person will not find enough gold to make it worthwhile. Also a little history : At the height of the gold rush in 1898 and 1899, more than one million people made plans to go to the Klondike area of the Yukon Territory of 1898 in northwestern Canada, and one hundred thousand plus actually got up there. Half of them left with nothing. Quite a few froze or starved and died. A fun place to see.
Great info. That's part of the reason I choose to come so far to mine and explore. Very few places have this history. Probably "more" than half left with nothing..., but a few got filthy rich and used that money to start large businesses. I've heard many stories of well known companies that were started (in the early part of the 20 century) with money a miner made in the Klondike. Someone should do research and write a book explaining where all the gold/money went. Thanks for the comment.
Great video..... Love watching a well put together video without having to ask questions or search the comments for answers. Thanks for the effort and sharing. Good luck.
The wild west is still alive yay! Beautiful unspoiled country up there thanks for the interesting video. And thanks so much for not ruining it with awful music in the background and I like the minimalist narration👍👍👍
A true Yukon girl. Not that many of you out there Sam. The Gerties girls are all shipped up from the South. LOL. It's a nice place to visit, but no place for a girl in the winter. Cabin fever for sure. You probably have some great memories. Thanks for the comments Samantha.
Yeah, that was the first pan I took, unfortunately, I was coming up dry in the few pans after that. It's interesting how the old timers left spots of gold in some places. But that's what everyone is looking for; a big spot of virgin ground. :)
I'm a card carrying member of Diamond Tooth Gertie's! Came through in 1980. Bought my big knee high red-toed mud boots there in Dawson. Had rained so much I desperately needed them. You are so lucky your windshield wasn't shattered. Most of them are from trucks throwing gravel. Driving all that way to Fairbanks is quite the adventure. I love Cassiar Highway. I love it all !! :))
@@Dr.G Speaking of mud boots, an Inuit grandma down from Tuktoyaktuk was there in Dawson that day trying to sell a pair of gorgeous handmade sealskin and red ribbon mukluks that were my size. I met her just after I bought my rubber boots and my $20 Gertie's card. She was only asking $20 for the pair. She was as desperate for money as I. I was eating only peanut butter sandwiches all the way up the highway. I wanted her mukluks SO bad, and to help her with $20, but I apologized to her and said I had just had to buy my rubber mud boots and was out of money except for gas, which was the honest to God truth. She smiled and took my hand and said, "You must be a Visitor. A Tourist comes here dressed in polyester with blue dyed hair and spends $300 and then leaves. A Visitor comes with only 1 shirt and one $20 bill and doesn't change either one. But they leave their heart. I really like Visitors. You're always welcome here with us." We both exploded with laughter. She had totally seen my heart and felt comfortable in our mutual poverty. I regret to this day that I couldn't buy her gorgeous sealskin mukluks, but she sure won my heart. I left it there with her in Dawson. I never forgot the message of love that was sewed into her works of art mukluks she was having to sacrifice for $20. :))
Thank you for the beautiful video. It's been 35 years since I have seen real pictures of the north west part of North America. I forgot just how awesome it is.
Well, if the ground is not claimed you can measure it off, post the necessary posts and markers, then head down to the mining office in Dawson and fill out paperwork. The fee is $10 a claim. LOL. However you are required to do at least $200 dollars per year in work on the claim to keep it. And you can keep it as long as you are still working it. You can prospect right away as long as you are not using heavy equipment. If you plan on working your claim in a similar manner to the claims on this video you will need many licenses and permits. That is expensive (thousands), and usually take a year, or more, to acquire. Thanks for the comment Alan
Hey, thanks Marvin. Life's too short not to have a bit of fun now and again. :) The season lasts from May to the beginning of October or whenever the water freezes. No water, no mining... Thanks again for the kind words.
Wow amazing movie. I’ve watched this exactly 4 years ago but it popped up today on my suggested videos and watched again and still enjoy it. This is a quality video , a complete package. How are you doing today Dr. G?
Thanks for the kind words my friend. Computer crashed, covid twice, and no spare time anyway. lol. Planning on getting a new vid out sooner or later. I appreciate you checking in on me.👍👍
@@Dr.G oh sorry to hear that. Me too since covid started I did not make any metal detecting video on my metal detecting channel and was not able to metal detect anymore. Wow, so pretty! Love that shiny too! Thanks for showing us a glimpse of the neauty. That clean up sluice was chock full at the end of the video!! Stay safe!
Awesome video mate, this gave me a beautiful insight to the Yukon on an everyday level which involves no publicity paid actors and dramatized scenes for major tv channel's involving gold miners, hopefully one day I can afford an extended holiday to Canada and check out the gold and big trees, thumbs up from Australia.
Thanks a lot Wedge for the kind words. I tried hard to show what the average, everyday miner experiences. It's really a 'back to basics life" up there as a sole, or mom and pop, operator. The gold shows don't really show how the vast majority of miners live and work. Mark Twain said "truth is stranger than fiction"... and I believe that in the Yukon the everyday miner is much more interesting that the "gold show fiction" LOL. Thanks again for the great comment. 👍👍
Hahaha, Yeah, too much scripted stuff for me, although I do like the graphics they use showing how the machines work. Thanks for the comment my friend.
Great point. People are sluicing the dredge tailings and finding big nuggets. The nuggets are too big for the old timers sluices and I guess they didn’t have nugget catchers. The nuggets in the video came from an area of the Yukon where they are often found. The miner sells them at a premium to my friend to use for jewelry. Thanks for the comment.
That's for sure Becky. You might not know it when a problem starts happening, and you don't want to let those big clunkers get away either. :) Thanks for the comment.

Just curious.. what do people think of tony and all them up in the Yukon? Find it kinda bad that tony just leaves his garbage any place he wants. Also amazing video I would love to spend a summer up in the Yukon, did camping up that way ages ago with family very pretty place
Matt, that's a good question, and I'm going to sidestep it. LOL Everyone up there has a point of view but no one wants to be quoted. If you know what I mean. :) Thanks for the comment buddy.
Tonys stuff isn't garbage and it's not abandoned, there's no hard and fast parking rules off the main streets in the Yukon, he's living his dream like a lot of other people up there, it's a far cry from city life where everything and everybody is regulated to death/conformity, being a territory not a province makes life so much easier, goverment is a breeze there, eg. drivers licence renewal, same day service, it's laminated and in your hand when you walk out the door, almost a fantasy eh? goverment picture id? less than $20 laminated and in your hand before you leave, in the same building. Land use permits are easy to obtain, homestead/farm land ownership is still possible by the average person, if a person is missing the city you can go to Whitehorse lots of box stores now and with the influx of people moving up from down south they seem to bring the city mentality and the desire to be ruled and regulated, so I stay in Dawson when I go back up, at least there no one stares if you don't comb your hair, lol.
Like the others have said. The yukon is free country, unlike the usa. It's mostly Tony's property, or leased property. He is allowed to leave his stuff lying around. How would you like it if the gov came to your house and told you to clean it up? All those areas have been mined before. Look how untouched they look when they tear in to them again. Mother nature will repair herself when humans leave it alone

Ha, sorry, no guided tours, I wish I could. The big nuggets are definitely something everyone's looking for. Most of the gold up here is pretty fine. Thanks for the comment my friend.
Thank you Dr. G! Your tour of Dawson City and the back roads brought back some memories. I tried to get up to Tuk and the Arctic Ocean by motorcycle in July of 2018, but the rains and slick roads kept me back, so I "only" got as far as the Arctic Circle. I'm OK with Mother Nature beating me up there! Actually, the road was closed a day after. It was a pretty slick track, and my tires were more suited for the highway than for the Dempster Highway, as I had ridden essentially from Toronto, Ontario. Anyhow, I'm going to try to try to make it up to Tuk again, and would love to see that mining outfit and give a hand at panning-- not sure if it's for public viewing, or how you got into there, yourself! Good luck to you next year!
Wow Bill sounds like a fantastic adventure. I see lots of long range bikers up there from all parts of the world. I don't know how you guys deal with the changing weather conditions. But definitely a fun way to see the country. I would love to take you panning but all the claims you saw on the video were of friends of mine and I don't want to impose on them. I have some claims of my own but they are not ready to mine yet. Have a great trip and good luck Bill. Thanks for the comment and the great story.
Nice video! Brought back memories! I did that drive alone in the late 90's It gets lonely! I had no radio and hours and hours of driving and maybe seen one car on the road passing me by every few hours and in between! Only until you get closer to a town... In April my trek was heading back down to San Jose, Calif from Fairbanks, Anchorage and Denali Park.took me three days to get home! 14hrs a day driving a loaded down box van that barely made it up the grade! 15mph to 55mph was average speed! Dirt roads were a good full day! The rest was paved. Almost froze to death the first night! Teeth chattered so hard I couldn't stop em! Wrapped myself in all the clothes I could wear and it did no good! Got hit with a big snow storm first day out of Anchorage. Hit hard! No visibility and barely made it to a little town. A good foot of snow and I waited it out til day break. Next day I bought a sleeping bag and what a life saver! Only needed a t-shirt and my boxers and I sweated up a storm! LoL!! Canada is amazing as so is Alaska in Summertime! State bird is a Mosquito! LoL! Eagles are a sight to see in flight! What a wingspan they have! Awesome to see! What a memory!

Your life will be over before you know it, so don't waste a day. If you follow the pack you'll end up being depressed looking at a cell phone all day long. Make plans to get out there and do it. Check with the Canadians as far a working in that country. Also, maybe Alaska has some mining opportunities. After 4 years your video showed up....what a great video well documented and beautiful one of the best .!!
This was way better then watching it on TV, this video is the real Yukon gold thanks 4 sharing
Haha, thanks bud, I appreciate the kind words. :)
@@Dr.G I thought hydraulic mining was banned, that is what the lady is doing.

Yeah, Pete. I look forward to crossing that border every year. Once I'm in Canada the real trip begins. 20 minutes past the boarder is Hope BC (where they filmed Rambo).

Very impressive. The New Zealand trommel belongs to a friend of mine and I don't know how much he paid for it. :)

Thanks for the comment.

did you actually find gold in the first pan?
looks like an awesome job.
What a great comment. Gerties is a lot of fun, and I would have loved to see the red toed mud boots. LOL. 👍😊

You're very welcome my friend, I'm glad you enjoyed it.
How do you stake a claim and for how long does it allow you to prospect on it?
Thanks for the answer Dr. G
I would love to head up there and get a claim just for the fun of prospecting with no heavy equipment and have a nice little cabin.

Hahaha, Yeah, too much scripted stuff for me, although I do like the graphics they use showing how the machines work. Thanks for the comment my friend.
Those larger nuggets, i wonder how many of them go out the trommel, into the debris pile?
Great point. People are sluicing the dredge tailings and finding big nuggets. The nuggets are too big for the old timers sluices and I guess they didn’t have nugget catchers. The nuggets in the video came from an area of the Yukon where they are often found. The miner sells them at a premium to my friend to use for jewelry. Thanks for the comment.
It pays to pan the debris pile once in a while to make sure your getting all the gold and not making any costly mistakes

Don't piss of the rich old man and his family got ya ;)

Love it, the views, the excitement of exploring the ground or what's around the next bend.

Hey, thanks Chris. I started in Los Angeles. 3000 miles each way. Long, but great fun. 😊👍
Watched this video to cure my gold fever, it only exacerbated it. :D I guess a trip to Alaska o Kolyma is what doctor would prescribe.

Thats some nice gold there!
Beautiful! Just amazing. Do you offer guided tours? It's a dream of mine to visit the Yukon and pan for gold. I just want one nugget to take back with me to cherish the memory and experience.
This is just Red Dead Redemption in the North, 2019 edition

Oh wow. Awesome. It hasn't changed much I'm sure. Al still has his "gourmet snack bar" LOL Thanks for the comment Dan.
Sounds like a crazy trip Giuseppe. Love it. Thanks for sharing. :)
