Between the lines it sounds to me that Maynard isn't too inspired by Tool's process. I can hear it. On the latest record he sounds peppered throughout all the songs vs something like "The Patient" or "46 and 2".
I felt like Maynard was totally detached from the overall process on this record. It felt like Justin and Adam and Danny had been living in a bunker working on tons of riffs and then they'd just email them to Maynard and he'd send back some lyrics and that would be a song. 7empest is a definite highlight for Maynard on the album though and it's definitely one of the best Tool songs ever.
As much as I like Tool and the genius of the new album I can’t help but be bugged by one piece of this interview. The part about not signing autographs because it’s not about us it’s about the song is hypocrisy. Are they going to say no to the royalties coming or do the ‘songs’ get them.
Signing an autograph usually means recipient flips on ebay etc for a profit. Making performer feel cheap and used. Whereas royalties are an agreement paid upon for artistic rights, something a performer deserves. Thought this was common sense.

this is my first Zane Lowe interview. NOT my first MJK interview...even close. Zane is a great interviewer! By comparison, is better at bringing out an honest and casual conversation. Not an interview. New fan!
Great interview. I wish it was longer. After I lost my best friend jason to suicide when I was 27, for years I would have a dream that we were both flying. I would say, jason, I thought u were dead’ and jason would tell me that he was still alive. I wonder if the flying dream a universal phenomena?
I have had dreams that I was flying . I have also had dreams that I think are dead relatives visiting me, but I have never had a dream that my visitors were flying with me. Cool dream though. I believe it was a visit.
Flying dreams are your deep self giving you a reality check. The point isn't the flying, the point is waking up and going 'aw dammit'. The higher you fly the more disconnected from reality you are. Before i learned this i used to wonder why i'd sometimes have a flying dream where i could just bob along five or ten feet from the ground. Similar dreams involved being able to jump and get loads of air, or do the splits. It's a reality check, that's all.
@ I don't know what a hive mind is. The purpose of dreams is to break invalid associations made between things during the day. Remembering your dreams at all is a failure of that function. Genetics is just the soma, the expression of the chemical code. Some weirdos think consciousness erupts from physical matter, others think all matter erupts from consciousness. But dreams are to your mind what farts are to your gut. I know they can be portentous or helpful, but that's not what they're for.

"If you're one of those artists holding out like: I'm only gonna sell this music through this medium... Shut up!" Tell that to your friend Henry Rollins, Maynard. Pleeease.
This album is a monster! A friggin bulldozer!! The success of it, still growing at an accelerated rate, speaks for itself. Yes, there a small number of haters. Always will be. You all need to stick to Sober, 46&2 and whatever slayer type band is trending. You should steer clear of the live shows and stop giving the real fans a bad name.
luap ekcol I agree. I was referring to all the wannabe slayer type bands that ride slayers nutz. They generate “Tool fans” but they don’t listen to the lyrics and just want constant overbearing bass riff. Tool has evolved and are high masters of their craft. That said, FUCKIN SLAYER!
Which is so dumb though. Like why even bother being an artist if you don't want people to appreciate your art? I can't phatom what it would be like to have people worship you. I'm sure it can be annoying af but damn be a little understanding.
I thought he changed his stage position from front to back because at that time Dime Bag got shot, and people getting onto stage. He didn’t want to be a target out front. To me it explained the riot gear he wears. I’m sure it’s all bullet proof gear. I remember seeing the video of a fan getting to him on stage and he dropped him and put him in a hold till the staff pro got the fan off stage.
It's pretty clear he's not in it for the money. Listen to how much he's talking about art being the important part. At this point they are all millionaires.
Yea but a front man is a front man. It doesn’t matter how sickly great a Guitarist, Bassist, or drummer are... history suggests that no matter what, the singer of a (rock) band is the symbol of the band, or the image of the band. Danny Adam and Justin are amazing at what they do. Amazing .... but on top of Maynard being a great metal singer, and musician, he is way too much of a character to lose. Tool needs him because of what he has done, said, and sang over the last 29 years. He has kind of forced his self in to making the band pop, and stand out. Van Halen wouldn’t be Van Halen without David Lee Roth. As great as Alex and Eddie were... Roth stood out in spite of being the least talented person in that band. Sammy only worked cause VH was already a thing. Two very different bands I know lol.. but I’m just using them as an example. The singer doesn’t have to put in work ... they just don’t ... but they are a massive reason why the Band is as successful as they are.
I love Tool. That being said, hats off to anyone who has a good interview with Maynard. He is so aloof, such a contrarian, and has such a huge ego, it's sorta disappointing. I'd like to meet any of the other members before I'd want to meet Maynard. They all seem much more personable and open to a conversation. Trying to pull that out of this guy just doesn't really happen. I guess all the fans who put him on a pedestal deserve some of the credit here, as well.
This isn't true, he's just not open to people and was very socially awkward for a very long time. He just likes to mess with people when he doesn't really want too or know the answers to some people's questions. He's just private. But he has grown leaps and bounds as a person. If you can't see that you've missed it. But you're entitled to your own opinion. He is a humble person and trys to keep his ego in check, like all of them he just has a different way of showing it, that's all and I believe he's very misunderstood sometimes.
my only criticism of FI is the distinct lack of Maynard's signature vocal style; throughout the entire discography he used the 9th and 11th heavily, lots of minor and augmented notes that brought tension to the melody. In FI he is much more on the narrow track used by countless rock bands' vocalists
They had to tune down so he can still do The Pot. He often doesn't belt out the end of Vicarious. They don't do crazy stuff like Ticks and Leeches. He can still scream but not much, it hurts his singing voice. He wrote his parts on this album as an aging man thinking about being able to perform them well into the future, not stuff he struggles with or has to modify or simply not do live. IMO, of course...
Man its killing me that people dont get what 13 years can do to a human. Hes just not the same person. We all grow. I expected that and i love the new album endlessly. Im thinking if you really get tired of these guys getting old just put chocolate chip trip on repeat and remind yourself that dude is 56
Because you are people's Hero, I know you're mine, Maynard. However I respect you and wouldn't beg you for your autograph lol I'm more interested your mindset and your thoughts, you as a person. You're an inspiration even if you don't think so. Your drive is unworldly, the things you have overcame and accomplished is incredible to me. Also before seeing this my take on this album was about personal growth and making peace with this from the past. I think those so called fans who don't really care for it honestly just don't get it. They're stuck as individuals and refuse to let go. They like the view from your younger years when you came off as more angry and hard so to speak. I understand you're just telling your story. They just don't get it. However, I have seen the growth from every song you all have created and you guys are like fine wine You get better with age!!! Those silly so called fans haven't figured that out and they will maybe or they won't and they will always stay stuck. Change is neccessary for growth and some people refuse or fight change instead of embrace and learn. Thus as you said so many missed opportunities. I am an empath as well, can be very rough at times but mostly rewarding. Here I am writing this as some country girl from Ky, hoping you will actually look through the comments and see this. Just know that as a true fan. You are my hero and I enjoy your music and it has helped me through so many things in life. Especially losing my mother as well. You touch more people's lives more than you know. And I saw an interview where you said you were hoping you were still important or relevant after such a long break. What I feel listening to FI is Brilliant, Magical, Fantastic, Splendid musical performance and a detached singer who is also a bit annoyed and self referential. I Love them, you can't imagine how much I do.. Maybe I just hope they'll release a FI Vol.2 :D
@Toxic Potato We're not alone ;)
Nemi S I agree with you, I feel like mjk heart isn’t in TOOL as it was in the past. I’m also a huge fan of the band and mjk
Thank You Maynard and Zane Lowe
Between the lines it sounds to me that Maynard isn't too inspired by Tool's process. I can hear it. On the latest record he sounds peppered throughout all the songs vs something like "The Patient" or "46 and 2".
I love everything about his vocals on the new record! As always.
Agreed.
Also as Pneuma is playing in the interview it totally has that Patient type riff.. i do love that part ooh
DuckTalesWooHoo1987 agreed.
I'd love to watch his Game of Thrones S08 rewrite!

As much as I like Tool and the genius of the new album I can’t help but be bugged by one piece of this interview. The part about not signing autographs because it’s not about us it’s about the song is hypocrisy. Are they going to say no to the royalties coming or do the ‘songs’ get them.
DM me, I'm giving out free autographs. I'll do it in a purple sharpie even.
Signing an autograph usually means recipient flips on ebay etc for a profit. Making performer feel cheap and used. Whereas royalties are an agreement paid upon for artistic rights, something a performer deserves. Thought this was common sense.
People love you album and this song .. Maynard.. "...great" lol

There was a time when practically no one knew what the members of Tool looked like.
Huh? They always did photo sessions, from the first album until now.
@@mugwump7049 They were always shrouded in mystery. They never really had clear pics on their album artwork. Never were in their music videos. All the interviews I came across were always in written form. When I first heard Danny's voice in a group interview after Lateralus was released, I assumed he had a cold.
@@doylelacrua Actually, their very first video was not an Adam Jones short film. It was a much more traditional video featuring B&W pics of the band.

this is my first Zane Lowe interview.
@ That's where we live after we die, in the memories of others, which lets reputation destruction add a new terror to the grave.
Thanks. Does anyone live in Los Angeles.

I agree. I was referring to all the wannabe slayer type bands that ride slayers nutz. They generate “Tool fans” but they don’t listen to the lyrics and just want constant overbearing bass riff. Tool has evolved and are high masters of their craft. That said, FUCKIN SLAYER!
If you're a fan, don't tell Maynard that. Ask him about his wine and leave lol
Which is so dumb though. Like why even bother being an artist if you don't want people to appreciate your art? I can't phatom what it would be like to have people worship you. I'm sure it can be annoying af but damn be a little understanding.
Where did Maynard get that shirt??
I thought he changed his stage position from front to back because at that time Dime Bag got shot, and people getting onto stage. He didn’t want to be a target out front. To me it explained the riot gear he wears. I’m sure it’s all bullet proof gear. I remember seeing the video of a fan getting to him on stage and he dropped him and put him in a hold till the staff pro got the fan off stage.
Dime was killed at the end of 2004, Maynard’s been standing at the back of the stage since roughly 2000/2001.
Maynard wore the riot gear because of the bananas.. And yes it's true, I was at the show in which he discussed it lol
57:58 This interview is like a tool song.....heyyyyyyyyyy lmao
Fuckin MJK
Step your game up and let people swear. Dont be so uptight
People need to understand that he considers music his job It pays for his bills wine is his life
It's pretty clear he's not in it for the money. Listen to how much he's talking about art being the important part. At this point they are all millionaires.
Tool is like good amd stuff
Would be way cooler to hear one of the other guys in the band do the interview. They are way more tool than MJK.
@Beetlejuice you're calling someone a dummy, and you can't even form a proper sentence let alone spell.
@@nsalerno91 Maynard isn't exactly a frontman in Tool, though. More like a... well, backman I guess?

It's chopped up heaps but it's something
Maynard over analyzes everything too much and contradicts himself a few times in this interview but the interview was great . Lots of good questions.
Are you saying his body is separated from his mind?
I just paid 500 dollars to go to your show
my only criticism of FI is the distinct lack of Maynard's signature vocal style; throughout the entire discography he used the 9th and 11th heavily, lots of minor and augmented notes that brought tension to the melody.
Can I have your autograph?
I heard someone say on a video Tool is back and they're here to Restore Order 🤣 lol
