I love Courtney's lyricism. She makes witty observations and odd remarks in a charming deadpan manner. I love her even more because she's a lefty like me. Thanks for this great video. Could you do one on Bjork?
Lie Likes Music Ah well that's a little disappointing but i understand. Maybe you could do one on Kate Bush. She has a lot of prog rock elements to her music. Or maybe St. Vincent.
That’s crazy I saw your comment and I always think of Kurt Cobain when I hear lefty and she started playing Come As You Are In the very same moment. She likes Nirvana and Green Day 2 of my top bands. Green Day was my first favorite as a young teen
It's not her simplicity that makes an impact on the listener, it's her authenticity. She feels and sounds like a real person, which is becoming rare nowadays for some unknown reason. She's also a great lyricist, perhaps on par with young Dylan.
Courtney Barnett is one of the most unique artists I think I’ve ever listened to and I personally find her music very relatable due to its simple themes and stories
Yeah but Mark Kozelek is an annoying prick now with some awful music, imo. "Ghosts of the Great Highway" is one of my favorite albums of all time, with Carry Me Ohio being one of my fave songs ever. "April" is also classic. "Songs From a Blue Guitar" was also good. I lost interest after "Admiral Fel Promises" which was a revelation in that Mark turned out to be amazing on the nylon string guitar. After that, his weird stream of consciousness, melody lacking songs with bashing Wilco and shit, blah. "Benji" is overrated imo. But his worst sin really is his awful cover of Elliott Smith's "Condor Ave" which you would think would be perfectly suited to Mark's story-telling style, but no. Sounds like he made the worst cover he could make on purpose. He can suck a dick, but man "ghosts" and "April" were great.
Personally I wouldn't put Kozelek and her in the same sentence. Mark Kozelek is a songwriting genius, while she puts a couple of unimaginative chords in succession and writes a lyric on top of it. She has good lyrics, eh, but her music simply lacks charachter. Must be the lesbo-coolness that seems to sell it to so many... the actual music...meh. Massively overrated.
Pedro Rocha If you've known her since her beginnings, you'd almost agree. She is raw, but awesome. Though, in reality, she is not yet a Legend in the grand scheme of things.
I've known Courtney Barnett since her beginnings. Patti Smith is a legend. So is Grace Slick. Madonna too. I like Courtney and much admire her music, but she has a long way to go to be a legend.
Just after she released a new album. Her guitar playing style reminds me a lot of Cobain and her lyrics are funny;sarcastic almost dylan-esque. We need more of this humble gem in the current world of music. Great stuff
I already listened to it once. I think it is quite good but not great as I feel her first album is much better than the latest one. I think her former band sounded much live-ier than the current one. Maybe i need to listen to it couple of times for me to get into it because there are certain songs I couldnt really get into it yet.
Her music video for Nameless, Faceless was recommended to me on RUclips and I was rocking the single til the album came out. She's a serious work of talent. This video is just in the right place at the right time to get me even more addicted 😏
ive never really connected to music before I started listening to Courtney's music it changed my perspective on music and made me realize that music was something that I can make and play myself
mainstream music oftentimes is very vanilla but indie music is kinda old school yet with modern touches. swirl them together you have real flavor I think.
I really didn't know much about her, I had heard "City is Pretty" before but didn't know it was her. I watched this video though and ever since, been listening to her nonstop. Thank you for letting me in on this amazing artist!
Thanks for putting me onto Courtney Barnett man! after watching this,i started searching her up,and the first thing i heard from her was the album Lotta sea lice with Kurt vile. after that,i listened to her newest album, and man... city looks pretty is one of my new favorite songs of the year... thanks again lie!
Awesome! No problem. Great music is made to be shared. Fun fact: i went to see her play with her band in Oslo just a week ago, and we stumbled into them right outside the venue. They were gonna have dinner. I was quite nervous and didn't know what to say, so the conversation was very brief. But that's the first time i've met an artist i really look up to.
Great video as always! Maybe consider doing one on Dick Dale and his influences on Surf Rock :) That would be super interesting! Another one could be Eddie Vedder: He's one of the "big 4" of Grunge, and he's the last remaining one, he's evolved from the Grunge scene, even after Grunge died out Pearl Jam was still there, and then he picked up a ukulele and made some really different sounding sweet songs :)
Lie Likes Music Oh naw. Courtney led me to you. Not the other way around. You taught me about the artist. It's really informing and I like to know about new artist. Have you done one about Car Seat Headrest, or Insecure Men yet?
I haven't heard of this person so it was great to have a nice, well-done and concise biography like this. Gonna listen to some of her stuff, see what I make of it...cheers man! PS--"Avant Gardener" has to be one of the best song titles ever :)
Yeah that's a really cool wordplay :) And i'm glad you enjoyed the introduction. Hope you end up liking her stuff. Personally i like the album she did with Kurt Vile the best.
Oh, I'll start with that then. Some of the stuff on the video sounds kind of rootsy, warm and a bit folky...I guess she must have been on the Tonight Show recently 'cause her performance of Nameless, Faceless is up next in my recs :)
Thank you for inspiring us with this video. My co-worker loooves Courtney that is on her playlist all the time. l should give it a much deeper listen now!
Hey I don't know if you'll ever read this, but this video was amazing, great quality :) I'll definitely check out more of your stuff! And I love Courtney a lot, she's currently my favorite artist and a huge inspiration, she motivates me to keep making music
I try to read all of my comments. And that's very nice of you! Thanks :) What type of music do you make? Is it something similar to what Barnett makes?
The best music is always simple and real. I don’t need intricate high skilled instruments just a simple 3 chord melody that comes from the heart. This is the reason people don’t get Nirvana. Kurt wasn’t necessarily the best guitar player but his music was from the heart and he had the voice of an angel. Both of them stand for the ideals I do. Music is art, expression and should be emotional.
That's actually a pretty good like to dislike ratio here in 2021. IDK what it looked like 3 years ago... but i personally think we agree that there should be almost no down votes!!
Lie Likes Music Well I only think Like Clockwork is one of very few albums that is a perfect 10 in my book. I literally cried when I listened to I appear missing for the first time. I can relate with the character in the music video. QOTSA is my favorite band of all time so as you can imagine that's when I started getting into your videos!
Her conversational lyrics took some getting used to after I heard the first single off her first album, but once I got used to that unique lyric-writing and vocal style she quickly became one of my top favorite artists of the 20-teens!!
I think I was actually in love with Courtney for a while after seeing her at a festival a few years ago. She kept looking at me and smiling while she played and I just felt like I was melting. It made me want to give her a deeper listen and her albums clicked and felt like they were for me like no other albums had before. Her music was so extremely comforting for me in a dark and lonely period of my life and I'll always love her for that (not like in an obsessed way like I used to but she'll always have a special place in my heart). Thanks for making this video! Courtney is the best
Hahah that's a cool story! In my mind i imagine you actually melted every time she looked at you lol. And yes her music was very meaningful to me in a spesific period too. I had just moved to a new place when they released Lotta Sea Lice. So every time i put that record on i think of that place in the countryside of Norway where i lived for 3 months :)
Arctic Monkeys was the last great rock band that started an international craze . Rock has already peaked. But every now and then, a rock band/solo artist will come up that will rock the year. Courtney in 2012, Mitski with Be The Cowboy, Fontaines DC with Dogrel in 2019
I had the same introduction as you had then. Loved what Kurt and Courtney did on Lotta Sea Lice. Perfect album to listen to during a cold and wet winter in 2017. Jules and his mates are coming up!! I wouldn't say just, though she is very Dylan-esque. Actually like a solid mix between Tom Petty and Bob Dylan, with some Neil Young thrown in. By the title "understanding courtney barnett" I assumed that this video was going to analyse her work, however it was much more of biography than really "understanding" her work
I remember first hearing her on her radio and my thought was "I can't believe someone has turned a bogan having a domestic into a musical art form". I stand by that. But I absolutely love her music.
What artist/band should be next? 🤘🎧
elliott smith.
Vince Clarke
Ariel Pink..! 🤘😎🤘🎶
CAKE please!
robert johnson!
I love Courtney's lyricism. She makes witty observations and odd remarks in a charming deadpan manner. I love her even more because she's a lefty like me. Thanks for this great video. Could you do one on Bjork?
That's cool :) And very true. I can't do a video on Bjork sadly. I try to stick to rock music all the way.
Lie Likes Music Ah well that's a little disappointing but i understand. Maybe you could do one on Kate Bush. She has a lot of prog rock elements to her music. Or maybe St. Vincent.

Courtney Barnett is one of the most unique artists I think I’ve ever listened to and I personally find her music very relatable due to its simple themes and stories
Yup i think that was a good reference point for why a lot of her fans like her. Thanks for resonating :)
My partner who is from China really enjoys Courtney Barnett's music.
She's such a unique lyricist. People like her and Mark Kozelek of Sun Kil Moon intrigue me with their way of story telling.
Mattack Mattack yes!
She's very punk. Take it or leave it, just lemme do my thing kinda person. They're the best because they don't care about what you think about 'em.
Yeah but Mark Kozelek is an annoying prick now with some awful music, imo. "Ghosts of the Great Highway" is one of my favorite albums of all time, with Carry Me Ohio being one of my fave songs ever. essemmetv in your opinion
Also Kozelek is a prick
She's so refreshingly humble while being immensely talented.
I love Courtney Barnett! Hearing that she struggles with social anxiety, but powers through it to become who she is today is inspiring.
Courtney is a Legend.
I just wrote the same thing. lol
No she is not, at least not yet
Pedro Rocha If you've known her since her beginnings, you'd almost agree. She is raw, but awesome. Though, in reality, she is not yet a Legend in the grand scheme of things.
I've known Courtney Barnett since her beginnings. Patti Smith is a legend. So is Grace Slick. Madonna too. I like Courtney and much admire her music, but she has a long way to go to be a legend.
She’s the real deal. One of the best modern artists. Australia is where alt rock is happening these days. It’s the new Seattle
Just after she released a new album. Her guitar playing style reminds me a lot of Cobain and her lyrics are funny;sarcastic almost dylan-esque. We need more of this humble gem in the current world of music. Great stuff
Thanks. Yes we sure need more of her music. About that, have you listened to her new album yet?
What do you think?
I already listened to it once. I think it is quite good but not great as I feel her first album is much better than the latest one. I think her former band sounded much live-ier than the current one. Hahah i'm glad it helped you get more into her music. And yes there's no doubt that she's got talent.
Many thanks from Norway. Rock on! 🤘
Elliott Smith would be awsome
ive never really connected to music before I started listening to Courtney's music it changed my perspective on music and made me realize that music was something that I can make and play myself
Wait I thought the "I'm having trouble breathing in" lyrics from Avant Gardener was about an anxiety attack (not an asthma attack)
I think what’s nice is that she’s not a packaged, polished product and this, in some way, means her music has a good free feel to it.
mainstream music oftentimes is very vanilla but indie music is kinda old school yet with modern touches. swirl them together you have real flavor I think.
Kurt and Courtney! I cant help but think of Cobain and Love!
Same!
Neat!
One is much less tragic than the other
Mind blown 😳😳😳
I really didn't know much about her, I had heard "City is Pretty" before but didn't know it was her. I watched this video though and ever since, been listening to her nonstop. Thank you for letting me in on this amazing artist!
Seriously. Check out her girlfriends Jen Cloher's material.... She's the real star and deserves better
Why not. Thanks for pushing me.

@@LieLikesMusic Awesome man! glad you had the chance to meet a artist that inspires you, dont worry about being nervous,id probably be nervous to ha
I been in love with Courtney Barnett ever since I saw her on a late night show. She's an amazing songwriter.
Great video as always! Maybe consider doing one on Dick Dale and his influences on Surf Rock :) That would be super interesting! Those are some great ideas. I can't promise anything for the close future since i have a ton
of requests atm. But i'll keep them in mind.
The Strokes??
I listened to 3 of her songs and I instantly said legend. Pedestrian at best stays in heavy rotation.
Nice! Stoked to introduce new people to good music!

I love all your videos dude. you made me discover a lot of artists that I otherwise probably never would have discoverd otherwise
That's the point of the channel too! Make videos about stuff you already like and get you to listen

She was in Peru? How awesome!
One of the best storytellers around!
For sure. She has a talent for combining songs and stories. Very few people can do both at the same time
in a way that supplement the other art form.
Another great video! Keep up the good work Lie, you definitely are my favorite music topic channel.
Thanks David! I sure will. Did you enjoy Like Clockwork? Just wondering because of your profile pic.

So well done, thank you!!
Love her!!! 🙌🏽⚡️🎸 such an amazing voice! Love her work with Kurt Vile too!
Her singing reminds me of Lou Reed. But she's got a voice with a ring that's quite unique at the same time.
Thanks for watching 🤘🎧
Loved it. But how long you gonna get me to wait till Elliott Smith?
A little over a week 😉
That is a really kind and helpful video! I enjoyed it much!!

I especially love her collaborations with Kurt Vile -- they mesh well together as musicians and songwriters!!
Within hearing 5 songs she became one of my top favorite artists *of all time.*
Bravo, great video. I'm going to see Courtney live in a couple of weeks - can't wait.
Thank you! Man that's gonna be a great show i bet. Say hi to Courtney for me xD
I will. :-D

Nah i think he should do that too
Nope, suggested Les yesterday would be great.
could someone suggest me artists with similar to courtney's music?
Jen Cloher, Kurt Vile, Angel Olsen, Ty Segall, Chastity Belt. These are just a few. My favorites atm would
ne Kurt Vile and Chastity Belt ;)
I just love her 💚

Courtney Barnett is just Bob Dylan with a tolerable voice
Hahah that's one way of seeing it
lmao
I wouldn't say just, though she is very Dylan-esque. Actually like a solid mix between Tom Petty and Bob Dylan, with some Neil Young thrown in. (her guitar playing is very Neil Young-ish, though she might be more influenced by Cobain, who also had that Neil Young-type guitar playing). Either way her lyrics are something I've never heard before, and very rare to find finger pickers who can play as clean and tight as her. If Rock is dead, Courtney is the defibrillator.

You misspelled Mark E. Smith
Cool! I've sent this to Courtney& Jen Cloher, TX C.
Hahah that's so random and awesome! 😂🤘 Thank you!
Understanding aphex twin, tricky and lamb would be awesome!

Yes rock is the thing i'm going for here. But they're all great suggestions.
I'm writing them down. Thanks!
Please do The Cure!!
Courtney Bennett, beautiful mind
By the title "understanding courtney barnett" I assumed that this video was going to analyse her work, however it was much more of biography than really "understanding" her work
Well i hope you understand her creative journey a little better anyways.
yes courtney!!

No problem my friend :)
Understanding Les Claypool?
THIS, ALSO MIKE PATTON
Saw them live at Loews! I'm a friend of Loews on line, so I got primo tickets!

That's awesome Megan! I can imagine. Would love to see them live sometime myself.
I first heard 'Avant Gardener' on Bojack Horseman and been a fan of her music since.
I first heard of her through a friend. But yeah, seems like a lot of people got their introduction to her
through that series.
Come as you are? or Eighties by Killing joke!
I remember first hearing her on her radio and my thought was "I can't believe someone has turned a bogan having a domestic into a musical art form". I stand by that. But I absolutely love her music.
She's a cool, talented girl. There I said it.
Just in time for tell me how you really feel.
Would love to see a Pavement or Grandaddy episode. Great job with CB, found out stuff I never knew. 😎
